How does Computer Ram make a computer faster and deliver better performance?
Hi there. I was just wondering why its such a big thing these days to have a ridiculous amount of ram in a computer? People tell me that the more Ram you have in your computer the faster your computer will be. I always thought that it was the processor that controls the speed of a computer and not the Ram. I had 512MB of Ram in my laptop and I have now changed it to 2Gigs of Ram and I've seen no difference in performance what so ever. Could somebody please explain to me what does Ram does exactly? Thanks in advance --------------------------------------------- ipad case iPad2 case ipad 2 case

Toccara I had 512MB of Ram in my laptop and I have now changed it to 2Gigs of Ram and I've seen no difference in performance what so ever. Could somebody please explain to me what does Ram does exactly? RAM is used for temporary data storage by the operating system and by all programs that run on the computer. When it reaches full capacity, data gets swapped back and forth between RAM and harddrive and the system slows down. Having less RAM makes this more likely to happen. Adding more RAM won't necessarily make anything run faster, but it will allow you to run more programs simultaneously or to have large files open without performance suffering.

If the machine has enough RAM (not RAM-starved hitting the VM swap-file in lieu of real physical RAM), adding additional RAM will not benefit performance.

RAM or commonly known as computer memory, is considered the cheapest way to upgrade computer speed. The computer uses codes like 1's and 0's that signal what is to happen next or what they are to execute next. More programs means more demand for RAM and if you do not have enough space, then they have to swap in and out of RAM on what is active. Swapping is not instant and costs some overhead. So more resources (in this case, the RAM), means no swapping needed, means faster computing.

+1 to Kalle's comments. For example, if you are doing large orchestral templates using top end libraries, having 12 gigs is almost a necessity, and 24 gigs is not uncommon.

You may already be aware of this, but a 32 bit system will allow you to only access up to 4G of RAM. A 64 bit system will allow you to access much more (up to 128). g

The computer processor search for instructions that are stored in the RAM memory of the computer to be executed. If those instructions are not stored in the RAM memory, they will have to be transferred from the hard disk the well-known process of "loading" a program.

RAM does not make a PC "run faster". It can help with page swaps or disc cache or what is loaded in RAM memory. You can't make a CPU that is rated at 2.8Ghz process any faster or you can't make a memory bus that is limited to 800Mhz run at 1066 or whatever. If you want the PC to run faster, buy a new faster PC.

you are right that was the processor which controls the speed not RAM. But RAM is also play a very important role. RAM is not increase the speed of your computer but its prevent your computer get slow like you want to play a 3D high definition game on your computer and you have 1 GB RAM than you can play the game but your computer get slow. Because processor is using whole RAM in your game. If you have 2 GB RAM than you can do another work simultaneously. It means that RAM is not increase your speed but prevent your computer get slow. So enjoy
