I think we'll see an X1e before an X2

It is an unfortunate fact of life nowadays, and for those of us who may use computers to make a living (outside of music that is), we are driven down a path of never actually owning the software. We, instead, pretty much rent the software, with yearly support and upgrade packages. Gone are the days when you could by a piece of software and it would last quite a few years, with very few "updates and patches." In my day job, I use AutoCAD, a CAD design tool. I have been using it for twenty years now, and is a perfect example of what I am on about. I picked up AutoCAD at V10, but that had already been released for some time, October 1988 in fact. V11 was released October 1990, and V12 followed June 92, V13 November 94, V14 February 97. Then in March 99, they changed the way they expressed their releases, and AutoCAD 2000 came out. I remember thinking at the time "uh oh... yearly releases are on their way..." Yearly releases didn't actually come until March 2003, but after that, we had a release each year. The earlier releases we justifiable upgrades and enhancements, but there were times when we thought " why on earth did they change that?" Most design houses do not bother upgrading for some time. Where I work at the moment I am using AutoCAD 2008, whereas the up to the minute release is AutoCAD 2013. Autodesk, the creators of AutoCAD, have a policy whereby they only support three versions backwards from the current release, so that forces businesses to "keep up to date." Anyway, the reason I pointed all that B.S. out is it's just an example of how the life spans of some software is nowadays. I personally do not think that Cakewalk will go that way, but, they have to pay the wages of their staff, and the way they do that is by constantly developing their tools in the hope that we will invest in them. And, I'm afraid that, as much as I love everything Cakewalk does, for the most part, I do not have bottomless pockets, and every now and then I will disappear off the Cakewalk radar (and Native Instruments, the other company that I have "supported" over the years). I'm with Guitarhacker... When I jumped properly onto Sonar (before then I was happy bobbling along with Cakewalk, as it was back then) I built a custom workstation for Sonar 5 SE. My new workstation coped very well indeed, for what I was doing (mainly MIDI with a smattering of audio). But a couple of years later I upgraded to Sonar 6 PE and entered the world of soft synths and also got into multi-tracking bands. So all of a sudden I was having to freeze synths in order to free up CPU duties, and my custom workstation really struggled. And here I am, with a brand new "mobile" workstation, highly spec'd and ready to roll... upgraded to X1 Production Suite... got a more plugins, and that's that. An example of Guitarhackers quote "As long as the computer is running, X1 will run." jumpin jack flash... I can't half type a load o'drivel when I set me mind to it lol

I'm hoping it'll be supported for a while yet. My daw is below the minimum recommended specs, and while X1 works fine I'm not going to be able to afford to upgrade for a while, so X2 will probably be out of the question for me.

Actually, what I'd really like for the next update, no matter what it's called, is the ability to load then entire updated program from just one DVD - none of this messing around with patch downloads and worrying about installation sequence. Get the product line for Producer down to 2 - Expanded & Non-Expanded. Or - and some of you might not like this - but do away with Non-Expanded altogether. One Flagship Sequencer - Sonar X1 Expanded

Bristol, if that were the case no updates would be made available - meaning no bug fixes. You would have to wait much longer for the product to be released if you want all the patches to be inclusive. And as for the versions, it's good to have choices. So I think Essential, Studio, Producer and Expanded is just about right. This gives users the chance to upgrade when they're ready and when they can afford to do so. One whole Sonar X1 Expanded may be too costly for some. And if they do release a new version, I still like the idea of an Expanded version.

Haha... Funny stuff but I think if X2 doesn't happen in 3-5 months we're all looking at another year or two which will allow more time for more of us to get on board or get acquainted with X1. The logic for the Bakers would be to add an additional year from the expected yearly releases so we'll all know within 3-5 months (time to turn in some pop cans.)
