How many of you?
Actually listen to the music you created/collabed/produced for strictly entertainment value? I find that I cannot just feel the music until something like a year later (and a good few months of no listens). Anytime before that and I'm still in "producer" mode. You?

I do, quite a lot. I have all of SMB's stuff on CD in the van, and a couple of compilation CD's of collabs I've done over the years. What is slightly depressing though, is that I seemed to mix better a few years ago..I think my hearing is becoming suspect, to be honest.

Usually by the time I've mixed a song I am too sick of it to listen for a while. But it is nice to listen out of mixing context just for the enjoyment.

I'm not sure about that, maybe that's because you can't distance yourself from the process on your own material. I think there are differences in how you mix stuff now but I wouldn't say it's not as 'good' as it has always been. I think maybe working on a few different things out of your normal zone might win you a little perspective back and help you realise you can make some totally different stuff work well with the undoubted level of skill you have. Maybe run with a couple of mixes of somebody else's stuff that needs a hand in the mix dept. and see what you cook up with that instead. I'm suspecting a bit of a fatigue related problem here rather than any real diminishing of your ability.

Actually listen to the music you created/collabed/produced for strictly entertainment value? That's a no here. I listen to some of my stuff but only as reference, I never put anything of mine on to listen to because I want to hear it to enjoy it for it's own sake. I never have even when I was playing. I think it's because of the familiarity, even if I played a record I loved as often as required over and over again as when working on a track I'd probably not want to hear that again either, for a good many years at least. I probably wouldn't mind hearing a song of mine done by somebody else though. I dunno 'bout that.

Yeah but the original question was for pure entertainment value not as a production excercise or for honing my ability. I listen to mine for those 'work related' reasons. Ok all ways read the questions wrong go off on tangets, I have "one" of those brains. The answer is still yes, I enjoy my music more than anything that is released today. It's like this because I don't really like modern music, there is nothing I want to listen too. In the old days when I first discovered The Beatles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson the list goes on. I would listen to nothing else and I still do but at the end of the day you can only listen to those songs over and over again so many times, as it is with my music. Hence why I do music so I have new music to listen to off course if other people enjoy it or if I make money from it great. have I got the question right now Neb from the Nebula Neb

bapu Actually listen to the music you created/collabed/produced for strictly entertainment value? I do. Nobody does the style of music I love anymore, and you can only listen to the originals so many times. The only CD's in my care are of my own music. I find that I cannot just feel the music until something like a year later (and a good few months of no listens). Anytime before that and I'm still in "producer" mode. You? I'm the same way. I obsess over everything for weeks, sometimes months on end when I'm in 'producer' mode, to the point where I get so sick of a song I can't listen to it anymore. Usually by that time it's truly done and I'm just splitting hairs feeding my musical obsessive compulsive tendencies. I'll chuck it in the drawer so to speak for a few months, then go back to it and most of the time I'm happy with what I had done and I can enjoy it at that point.

Only really having started a couple years ago (Whenever Sonar 8 came out) I enjoy listening to it while working or messing around the house, As far as mixing or working in Sonar I find that I have to take breaks atleast every hour or so and get it all out of my head and then come back into it with somewhat relaxed hearing again. (Kinda become tone deaf to everything going on and loose track of what Im trying to do because of it). Make sense? But yeh, I like listening to what we've done for entertainment purposes.

I don't know if this counts. I build amps and fix them, but I also work with bands to get their gear ready for the studio. Fine tuning, tweaking tones, changing speakers. Whatever it takes to make it sound exactly the way they want it to. When the talent is finished I usually get a copy of the album and I listen to it with a lot of pride and enjoyment, knowing I helped somebody get their tone. It's always fun to see your name on the liner notes.

I tend to be sick of it after I've finished it but usually go back to is several weeks later and get back into it. I think the only problem I have with that is I like a lot of my songs (obviously) but I never seem happy with the production. Then I want to re-mix, or even re-record parts. So I've slowly built up a whole load of new material that's at the sketch phase, waiting to be fleshed out. Some fleshed out stuff that needs tracking, Tracked stuff that needs mixing. Stuff I thought I'd finished but want to re-do and no completely "finished" songs that I'm happy with. At some point I really need to get some stuff off that crazy roundabout because I'm sure it's only people that are into recording that take any notice of the technical side of things. I can't remember the last time I heard a 'normal' music listener saying something like, "I think the bass is masking the kick drum", in fact I don't think I've ever heard someone say that except other like minded souls ........

bapu Actually listen to the music you created/collabed/produced for strictly entertainment value? Yes, absolutely I do. I see myself as something of a selfish amateur in that I only write, record and contribute to music that I like to listen to. Apart from the odd nagging, I don't have to meet deadlines and I don't have to confirm to any commercial template. I sometimes find it hard to believe how lucky we are to be able to do what we can for such a small outlay and in the comfort of our own homes.
