How many plug ins do you have?
I was sitting around the other day looking at my DAW (I really do not get to play with it much anymore) and realized I had probably spent the equivalent of the GDP of New Zealand on plug ins. I have All the UADs All the Nomad Factory All the Melda All the Camel (and all their soundsets) All the Audio Damage blah blah blah Native Instruments - Check G Media - Check Ohm Boys - Check PSP - Check (though there are 2-3 i am missing there) Fab Filter - Check I have come to the realization that in fact, I do not use plug ins. I merely collect them. And I help support the developers. It really isn't my fault. It is paypal. That is because I can hit "Pay with PayPal" and not have to actually use my wallet. Therefore it is sort of free. Ditto on sample libraries. I have bought libraries of things like Synthi AKS - OK But I have a vintage one right next to my controller keyboard Skiddaw stones which I think are rocks that someone hit with a hammer And the Rust collection of something from Tonehammer Dialog from B Movies like "It Came From a Half Empty Can of Mr Clean" I even have REX files for stuff I hate. Like Grime. Chill. Techno. Crap like that. And me, i am trying to build elevator versions of Lawrence Welk music using only a ukulele and a kazoo. Someone needs to do something to these sample library/REX files and Plug in companies...they are overloading my disk drive and draining my bank account. All Cereal aside, I do think I have somewhere close to 1 trillion plugs. Then there are these issues with alternative DAWs. Reaper. Studio 1. Hell I have not even run those. But I have them - thanks PAYPAL and the crap stuff - like all the money I sunk in to TC Electronic my they rust in hades. Anyway I hate that robot 1x.

yorolpal Ditto. So My ol pal My thought is like this Hmm a phase distortion synth? I only have three of those. This one isn't but $199. Maybe I will stay home Friday night. That will make up for it. OR $499 for ALL the Nomad Factory Plugins? Wow. I bet their compressors and EQs are totally different than all those I have on the UAD platform and alll those I had on the TC power core and all those I had when I bought a package from PSP. They have to be totally different, right? Sometimes it is a feeling that I have to support people. Like the guys at Camel Audio. Those guys a friggin geniuses. Ever try Alchemy? It has to be one of the most versatile things out there. Then I have to ask myself - why are you buying plus that emulate things where you actually have the vintage hardware? Like minimoog, oberheims (I gots 2), ARP (i bought the Arturia one), Memorymoog.... I can understand buying the PolyKB since they made maybe 3 of those originally. And Karyn, this is totally not my fault. My computer auto fills in the stuff on PayPal. I just have to supply the password and hit yes like 2x.

Even though I don't have the amounts you have, and likely the amount of stuff I have would be classed as modest, I do have enough stuff to completely concur with your sentiments there. The strange thing is why do I have libraries like you mention such as 'Dirty South' or 'Crunk' loops too? They must have been a real bargain, either that or I regularly lapse into blackout and go into 'auto buy' mode. The strange thing is I only ever use pretty much the same few things over and over. I resisted the new Robot 1X though as my old robot 8.5SP seemed to be working so well.

I have actually looked at them numerous times. I kept thinking "I have just the project for this..." Then I go back and think about how few times I have used my indian percussion REX files, when the time I was buying them I thought "Wow these are really well recorded and versatile". Turns out they were really versatile for my electric sitar. But Banjo and Tablas and Sousaphones do not work well together in a mix, no matter what SOS says.

Daws (order of use): Sonar, Ableton, Reason/Record, Acid - (use Sonar 95 per cent of time (with Reason), Ableton the other 5 percent. Instruments: Sampletank, Tattoo, Tassman, V-Synth by Novation (never use any of these). Effects: TRacks, Nectar, Amplitube (lots of use, except Amplitube which I never use) Misc: Wavelab (lots of use) Pretty humble collection by most people's standards but still a lot of crap in this list.

After years of not messing with pure samplers, I fell in love with Kontakt whatever version is out. I have amassed a sizable (like 600 MB) sample collection - though I rarely play them. Some of the ones I love are http://www.soniccouture.com/en/ Have all but 3 of these. The Ondes is amazing. So is the Novachord http://www.hollowsun.com/ Another amazing set of samples and I bought most of them. The Novachord is amazing too. Wait, I already have one of those. Well now I have two. The Oscillosine sounds phenomenal. I have no idea what I will ever do with it. Then again it didn't cost much. http://www.tonehammer.com/ Havent bought all these yet, but I have 4 internal 1 GB drives and 3 externals. I have room for them. I got the two anti-drums and the two rusts and Frendo (which sits there with Oscillosine - sounds great but I am not smart enough to use it). I am sure this guy will get the rest of my life's savings.

Course I suppose I shouldn't buy anymore stuff till I actually make some money on this stuff. If I can't make a good song with what I have now, it's not the gears fault, lol. Still, I'm going to keep looking for that "easy" button. Maybe Staples should release plugins.

Hi SC, Well, you have to ask yourself a serious question. Are you happy about these plugs when you buy them if only to just audition them and then put them in your tool box? If so, ask no further....you have your answer. I'm in the same boat as you, but I don't know if you run a studio full time or not. That's my excuse. When I buy something for me, it's always stuff that I need. When I buy stuff I know I may not use or for a one-off job, it's for the business and it's good to have them in the ole tool box for something else. I have disc upon disc and hard drive full of plugs and programs through out the years. I've been buying them and storing them since 1996...so I feel your pain. If I didn't have the business I have, I'd not have quite a few of them. But I only buy what I need these days. For example, I'm a hard core UAD guy, but I don't own them all because I didn't feel the need. If I need something for a specific project, I'll try the demo...if it works, I buy it. I never fire up the demo's of their stuff unless it's something I'm interested in. As a matter of fact, I have all the plugs from them that I don't own disabled in my plugin manager. If you're unhappy with buying this stuff, set a limit in your pay pal account. I always keep a VERY little bit of money in mine for emergency, but all money that comes in to me instantly goes to my bank account so I don't let it sit in there and tempt me. :) If you're having fun, enjoy messing with this stuff and can afford to keep on doing it without system problems, just enjoy it brother. If you're not and it's starting to get on your nerves, the less crap you have on your system the better it will run as I know you know. Just think of all the hard drive space you'll gain as well as less chances of any errors or issues.

Thanks DD. I need a 12 step program. I already have a 12 Tone Program (for u noobies, that was the original name of Cakewalk - the 12 step program). I think my issue has become one of maximizing the fun out of a minimal amount of time. Or I am a junkie. You need the studer plug for UAD2. It is some awe.

I have some others that I don't use very often. I have tried to keep my plugins limited to the ones I actually use.
