How much hd space have you used for your X1's projects and samples drive?

This will help me get an idea of how large a hd I will need for my projects/audio and samples drive. Does yours fill up faster now that you are using X1?

How fast it fills up depends on the bit depth and sampling rate you record at and whether you record digital audio or mostly MIDI. HDD's are cheap nowadays, so if you have available space, I would recommend at least a 2 tb data drive AND a 2 tb external drive that automatically backs up the main data drive nightly. That way you have a good, constant backup of whatever you're working on.
Just my two cents, but at least start out that way. You can also buy a Buffalo NAS unit that has more drives in it if you really want solid backup and storage, but it's kind of overkill for most of us...

    Good luck!!

It's no different than anything else in life. Given the room, you will fill it. I'd start with a 2TB. X1 won't make it fill up any faster; your penchant for samples and sample-based instruments will, as will the frequency and complexity of your writing.

I have a 1.5 TB drive for my projects and my Sample Library drive is also a 1.5 TB, but as others have said get the most that you can afford, just make sure you get drives with at least a 7200rpm rating.  I bought my drives a while ago, but at the time they were big drives so I bought what I could get for the price I was willing to pay.

How fast it fills up depends on the bit depth and sampling rates but also on how much music you write, how many tracks are in the projects, and how many times you delete and record over a part.

All those various takes are all saved in the audio folder. So while you might have one take that is saved and used, all the other takes.....assume you tried to get that solo 23 times before you nailed it.... all those clips are still saved and taking HDD space.

If you have 1TB or 2TB of storage space, in a home studio for yourself, the computer or drive will likely die before the HDD gets filled.  If you run a "for profit" studio, you could fill a large drive in a relatively short time.

I have a 1 TB drive for storage and the computer is just about 1.5 years old. The drive is not even close to halfway yet. I'd have to look to see the exact amount but I suspect the songs files are probably around 20% or less.   since this drive is pretty large, I also store my sample libraries there as well.  they take up about 10% or so of the drive. (again I'd have to look to be sure)

I keep the programs and synths on a different drive which is only used for temporary storage as I am working on the songs..... once finished they are moved to the storage drive, and backed up to an external storage drive as well.

last year I wrote and recorded 30+ songs..... this year I'm writing quite a few more.... The storage drive also has all of the song files I recorded on previous versions of Cake software on other computers.

IMHO drive space...... you can never have enough at today's prices.

I have 1TB for OS & Progs, 1TB for Projects, 1TB for Samples (all internal) and 3TB External for backups.

Whatever you do buy, DON'T get any sort of "green" version. These have a nasty habit of powering down to save energy, usually just when you need to use it!
