How much memory

How much memory do you need to run in 64bit mode is 6gb enough?

You can run in 64 bit mode with only 2gig of ram but it depends on what you want Io do.

I have 32GIG. I would reckon that 8 would be that absolute bare minimum just to run Windows x64 let alone a DAW with samples etc.

I run Windows 7 64 bit and SONAR 32 bit (mainly, although use 64 bit sometimes) with a "mere" 4GB.  Absolutely fine.

It does depend on what you will be doing. If you are loading a lot of samples, 6 GB will be on the low side. If you are mainly editing audio or using soft synths, it may be OK. My previous DAW had 8 GB and it was not enough for what I needed to do.

Windows takes up most of 4gb. If you do anything worthwhile you will be swapping to disk like the old days. Minimum of 6gb. 8gb is even better. I like 16 and with what I do, I never get below 6gb free.

16gb is what you should be looking for as a minimum. If you have anything below 8Gb it's almost certainly a bottleneck.

There's a heck of a lot more than just "Windows" going on, that's only a generic term.
Charly is right here, environmentally around 3Gb is generally taken up straight away before you do anything. Then memory starts swapping to hard drive if you don't have enough of it.

Well anyway ... you can find out yourself...
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

In my view pretty much every PC (whatever the requirement) should really have 8Gb minimum installed nowadays. Double it for DAW's.

Re: How much memory 2015/07/08 09:18:31 (permalink)
I used to run Win 7 x64 with Sonar x64 on 8GB which was totally fine for most applications, even 50+ tracks of heavy mixing with Steven Slate VCC etc.

When I started doing large-scale composing for TV I got frustrated with popping and latency when there are a bunch of synths open, and now I run 24GB. I don't think the indicator has ever showed more than 8GB in use, but I can keep 30 - 40 synths live with samples loaded and still get killer performance plus no latency.

My PC is only an i7 2600 (about 4 years old) with 1333 DDR3 RAM so I'm sure those numbers can improve tremendously by now, esp with faster bus speeds.
HOWEVER, the quality of your soundcard drivers may well make a huge difference too. I'm spoilt with RME :O)

You can't really "add" in most scenarios. He will probably end up throwing away his current memory sticks and completely replacing them. Memory is cheap I would go for as much as he can afford. Over 16Gb is probably getting a tad excessive unless his gets into the sort of thing LJB is describing.

If he already has 6Gb he can monitor the situation via Process Explorer (link above), ignore all our advice and do what's best for him.

Best Practice for Mac.....fill 'er up/max it out
Best Practice for PC......try to add at least 4gb to a stock PC if you have the slots.

Any rendering of audio or video needs anything it can get. 6(minimum)-8-12 will git-r-done. I had 2 4gb sticks so I just got 2 more..

I have 64 gb and regularly use about 40 gb of it; at that point the cpu seems to be the limiting factor in sonar, running all the vsts and isntruments, not the memory.

Macs use ram from top down. Microsoft has always been bottom up. Going to Intel and/or 64 bit may have changed things. I retired a few years ago....

I have no idea what this means but I'm guess you are stating that Mac's and PC's allocate RAM (physically and virtually) differently. That's a given but I'm not sure it's a huge difference (not a Mac expert but do know the hardware). I'm not sure though that buying more memory for Mac's makes their machines run any faster than Windows myself, just a different way of doing things... You can also configure Windows to allocate memory differently..

Yep...
As long as you have enough RAM for your most dense projects, adding more will not increase performance.
16GB is plenty for many users.
More extreme Vi users may need 32GB or even 64GB.

For dual-channel motherboards:
If you want/need 16GB, use two 8GB sticks... which leaves the option to move to 32GB without throwing away existing RAM.  If you add RAM, make sure to install identical sticks (this eliminates potential RAM compatibility issues).

For quad-channel motherboards:
If you're running a quad-channel motherboard, you're probably more concerned about performance than cost.
Go with four 8GB sticks (32GB total)... which leaves the option of moving to 64GB without throwing away existing RAM.

Best Regards,

I ran an (quite) old Intel Quadcore (2.5Ghz), with 4Gb of RAM for almost a decade, before upgrading, with success. I had to freeze tracks regularly, to keep the larger projects "happy". But it did not hold me back, in any creative way. But I think this is one of the things, where more is better. I have 16Gb RAM now, and the only improvement I have, is no need to freeze track repeatedly (beside "snappier" SONAR).
Best of luck.

16G allows plenty of space for softsynth samples for me.  I am quite sure I would be hitting a wall if I had less than 8G.  My piano alone needs 1.5G.  Windows and background tasks use almost 3G on my machine.

For any 64-bit machine, I wouldn't go less than 16GB at this point in time. Providing it is a current generation machine, that shouldn't be more than $150 or so USD.

What hockeyjx said.

Also, adding a SSD for (at a minimum) the system drive, with samples on a separate drive, would go a LONG way towards improving performance on most modern machines!

I used 8GB ddr2 on my previous computer and worked fine for most audio mixing. Sometimes it became a bit excessive in dense projects but it was also due to my processor being outdated and old. Just couldn't hack it anymore.
When creating instrumentals, if i loaded too many instruments itd start dropping and what not.

I now built a new computer. Currently have 6-core processor and 8gb ram ddr3, and it plays my old projects that would crash with ease. I use maybe an 8th of the power it used to take. I also have 2 more sticks RAM on the way il have 16gb ram. But have yet to really test my 8gb yet.

As others have said, it just depends on what you're going to be doing in Sonar. I use Sonar for composing video game music, and I work 99% with sample libraries and synths, so I use up a lot of RAM on heavily populated projects. I was getting by with 12GB for a while, but when I started writing more complex orchestral compositions, even 12GB wasn't enough. I had to upgrade to 16GB. If you're planning on using a lot of high quality/high resource sample libraries simultaneously, you'll be better off with a lot more than 6GB :)

16gb is what you should be looking for as a minimum. If you have anything below 8Gb it's almost certainly a bottleneck.

I ran x 64 win 7 and sonar 8.5 to plat x64 for years with 4gb and never had any issues. I have now upped it to 8gb as I bought kontakt 5. Funnily enough having the same conversation on the Sound on Sound forum and Martin Walker said he has 8gb and has never reached a limit in ram.
