How to Burn CD [Red book]

Hey! y'all. It's time to mix down a project and master it, and i want to hear the results on as many different systems as i can before i commit to a final mix, so want to make a CD that i can pop into any CD player. It has been a long time since i have made a CD and so i want some advice on the best way to do it. Does Sonar X1 Producer have CD burning functions? If not, can i do Red Book CDs from say... Microsoft media player? Or what do you recommend? I've searched using key words burn , CD , Red Book, and got nothing. Thanks.

    Sonar Producer does have a burn function (menu - utilities - burn CD), but it would be better done with an external utility.

    In Sonar you can only burn CDs Track-At-Once CDs, not Disc-At-Once.  I use CyberLink PowerToGo.

    Here's an article that mentions Sonar's burning ability:

    I use Nero.  Nero allows inserting the ISRC code, writing the disk title and song tiles to the disk (you must use Disk At Once - DAO to write titles to the disk).

    Also burn at as slow a speed as your drive will allow.  Many older audio CD players will not reliably play audio CD's burned at high speeds (they will skip or not play at all).  My CD burn speed "standard" is 8X.   Also avoid paper labels.

    Cakewalk's pyro Audio Creator is not bad for this function and it allows you to use VST effects from your Sonar library. Only problem is that Cakewalk hasn't upgraded it for a few years, but the $20 is not bad.

    I also suggest that most modern players or dvd players will also play re-writeable cds. Burn a re-writeable and try the results through whatever systems. If it doesn't sound to your liking you can always erase the re-writeable disc, re-mix and re-master until you get the final product. Then burn it again. I have used that trick many times when I just am not hearing what I want. When you get the final cut to your satisfaction then you are ready to burn to a finished CD-R. Just a suggestion that has worked for me in my early days of mastering. It keeps you from wasting cd-rs unless you need some extra drink coasters.LOL

    I've looked at CD Architect several times.  I have other programs for mastering, audio editing, etc.  When I get ready to burn the CD, I've already added whatever VST's, mixing, etc.  All I need is a program to burn the CD, and Nero does that for me.

    Since I'm a little bit old school I still prefer using SoundForge 8,there is 9,10 but I find SF8 has these least amont of usage on the resources and does a very fine job.I did render and do one in Sonorx1 expanded,and with all the pro channel toys(yes I bought them all) and still found SF8 easier and faster,and does come with a full array of tools needed for mastering.(especially if you  have done most in X1.

    No improvements have been announced for CD burning in X2. SONAR's built-in CD-burn feature isn't recommended for final burning, just for quick test CDs.

    Almost any CD-burning program is capable of creating a Red Book CD, but some make it easier than others. Nero will do it, as noted above. I used Nero for years, but it had some annoying quirks that eventually drove me away from it. Nowadays I use CD Architect, and as much as I despise Sony as a company I have to admit that CDA's the best application I've found for burning audio CDs.

    Its best to have a dedicated program for burning CD's. Dont count on a sequncer program like sonar to burn, as its not red book. Like it has been stated , CD Arch is a good program for burning cd's

    Nero has a problem with song titles that its had for as long as I can remember (current version has it too) that it will split a two word title when dragging to the burn windows.  e.g. if the song title is "Big Man", it will put Man in the Song Title field and Big in the artist name field.

    I've looked at CD Architect (I have a demo copy of the latest version) and I can't find anything in it that will allow burning to multiple drives at one time.  I have a bank of 5 CD/DVD burner drives and can burn 5 discs at a time with Nero.

    I have used Nero since the begining of time. Before that a Philips CD recorder ( $15 for a blank)
    I like that it will verify the burn if you ask, this saves handing out duds.
    I agree that it's a little buggy as noted. You drag and drop a folder of songs that are pre numbered and it will always mix them up.

    Sony says this:
    ~~~
    Disc-at-Once should be used primarily with recording audio discs. Disc-at-Once is designed to eliminate the 2 second gap that is between the audio tracks on an original audio CD after it is recorded. If you choose the Disc-at-Once feature during the recording process, the final copied CD will not have the 2 second gap in between tracks and the music will be continual play. Not all CD recorders support Disk-at-Once. Track-at-Once can be used for both data and audio discs. Track-at-Once keeps the 2 second gap between the audio tracks. When recording in Disc-at-Once mode the laser on the drive stays on continuously while during the Track-at-Once mode recording, the laser will turn off and on in between the tracks.
    ~~~
    In another source, I read that you should not use Track at Once if you are sending the CD off for manufacture because there could be clicks between tracks.  If that is correct, then the whole CD should be assembler in Sonar or in another tool with the gaps (or lack of gaps) between songs however you want them, and then the CD should be written as Disc-at-Once.

    In Nero (and Roxio when I used to use it), Disk At Once (DAO) needs to be used to write data (song titles) on the CD.

    No. Its able to burn a gold master cd  that can be sent to a replication plant for replication. But CDA cannot burn multiple disk at one time.
    Its used to make masters and error checked referecne cd's, for the most part.

    Unfortunately, CDA cannot write to multiple drives concurrently. If you have a 5-disk burner, the best way would be to create a master with CDA and then use Nero to duplicate it.

    From the SONAR Power! book series...

    "TAO versus DAO
    If you plan to have your CD duplicated professionally, you should have all your audio files together and burned to CD all in one session using DAO burning. This method of burning writes and closes a CD in one operation without turning the CD burning laser on and off between CD tracks. If you use TAO burning, the CD burning laser is turned on and off between tracks to create “links” between them. These “links” will show up as errors when the disc manufacturer tries to create a master disc from your CD-R disc."

    Best,
    Scott

    A duplicator will reject your master if it's not closed (or "finalized"). That happened to me once, with an installation CD I'd sent out for duplication. I assume it's the same for audio CDs. I honestly do not know what closing/finalizing physically means in terms of what's written to the disk, just that it's something you gotta do if you want the disk to play reliably or be duplicated.

    Track-at-once burning requires extra data to be written, data that the CD player in your car probably won't know what to do with, will interpret as audio and play them, resulting in clicks. It also may not be able to jump to the next track reliably. Another downside is that the extra data means you don't quite get the full capacity of the disk.

    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

      is Nero the only software anyone knows of that will burn to multiple drives? I was just hoping for an all in one solution that could do Red Book if necessary and also burn to multiple drives...I'll have to assume if there was something, I would've found it by now/someone would've mentioned it here... thanx for all the tips guys
