How to Get the Audio for the "Mixing with ProChannel" Tutorial

There's a tutorial I wrote about doing a mix with the ProChannel on the Discmakers site. The guide includes a link to download the example project, but several people mentioned it does NOT include audio - only the project file. I found out what the problem is.

To get the audio, you need to fill out the form to download the trial version of SONAR X3. You then get an email link with separate download links for:
  • SONAR X3 trial
  • CA-2A trial (needed for the section on using compression)
  • The audio for the project
If all you need is the audio, then you can simply download the audio. It's about 140MB.

I'm really sorry about the confusion and that it's not clear how to download only the tutorial project if you're an existing SONAR user, but this should take care of you.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Yes, that works fine. The one thing I would add is make sure when opening the project take note of the reassignment of the VS-700 hardware outputs. In order for the project to play correctly I had to manually assign both VS-700 main and sub to my main output.

Prior to this thread about the proper way to get the project, I had used the links the in pdf to grab the individual project and wave files. This almost worked. All the audio files have dropbox links. One of the drum file links is a duplicate. I have yet to read the pdf closely but it seems odd to have the links in the pdf.

As I have the PC-2A module will the project work without the need to install trial CA-2A.  I am just a bit fussy about installing stuff I do not really need, if you get my drift.

    Thanks

Except in the download requirements, the tutorial actually references the PC-2A. The project also loads the plug-in as PC2A so it appears to have been made with the old plug-in.

Also the full CA-2A replaces the PC-2A, so I would imagine the trial version would step on the PC-2A too.

Question is the email likely to take time to turn up just or am I too impatient

Not at a computer right now where I can give you a definitive answer, but I think so. Then again you can just download the tutorial and see if it loads. If not, install the Producer demo.

Thank you Craig - I tried to load the file, but it reports a whole bunch of plugins as missing, I suppose these are all exclusive to producer. I guess I will have to get the trial version. Just hope it won't mess with my current (steam distro) installation of Sonar. The Tutorial looks great.

This was an eye opener for me. I have always tried to cut frequencies and to notch out what I don't want, and to emphasize  the ones I want to keep. But seeing how Craig really boosted frequencies and that really helped give it focus and "life." Will use a lot of the stuff I saw tonight in my mixes.

I also took the liberty of trying different settings on stuff, like the VX64 tube settings, driving the console emulations harder, and just different things. Like I said, opened my eyes. Or should I say "ears!"

Ignore the wave links in the PDF. Follow the link at the top of the Getting Started section to the trial version of X3. Fill out the trial version form to get an email with a link to the full project zip file including the audio along with links to trial versions of X3 and the CA-2A. If you have X3 Producer and the PC-2A or CA-2A skip the trial downloads.

Unfortunately the installation of the Producer demo breaks off because it detects that I already have a full X3 version (studio) installed. At the same time a lot of plug-ins report missing when I open the tutorial project in my existing installation, see above. So unfortunately it looks as if I won't be able to do this - or can someone suggest a solution?

Re: How to Get the Audio for the "Mixing with ProChannel" Tutorial 2014/07/31 20:30:49 (permalink)
Craig just wanted to let you know that it was a real treat to "sit over your sholder" and watch you work. That's how it felt doing the tutorial. Really gave me a chance that I never had. To actually watch someone work with the tools that I have, to hear the results, and watch as you started and progressed to the finish.

I had a priject I have been working on and have never been satisfied with the results. I went in today with a goal "To remix using the information recently learned"  I did exactly what you did, started with just the recorded trks. No fx's at all. I gave myself two hours to do it so I don't get off on something unrelated to "mixing"

Well as far as I got was the two rhythm guitars. But I can already hear that they don't sound near as compressed, have more focus, and more dynamics than before. And I feel that I am on a better track than before. Thanks again Craig.

Anyone having trouble mixing or getting started mixing, would do themselves some good to do this tutorial.

    Done. Thank you.
