How to Unauthorize a Computer
Hi all, and I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Years. As you know, I'm back in the happy land of SONAR and my main DAW is Platinum. I bought the upgrade, so now I have free updates for life, which commits me long term to SONAR. I upgraded from X2, which I love. I reinstalled X2 on my main Windows desktop computer, and I want to do the same on my new laptop. I have Platinum on the new laptop, and I haven't had any trouble. I have X2 on my old laptop and my main desktop DAW. No problems there either, but I can't remember how to unauthorized the old laptop. I looed for that option last night on the Cakewalk site, but could never find it. I just downloaded X2 and installed it on this new laptop last night. Every time I try to open X2 on the new laptop I get a system error sign and it shuts the computer down. The new laptop handles Platinum fine, and I assume it would handle X2 fine also, but so far it hasn't, and I'm trying to find the reason why. Regardless, I still need to un-authorize the old laptop and make sure the new laptop is properly authorized. So the question is....before I re-download or re-install anything, does this sound like an issue caused from not un-authorizing my other laptop, and authorizing my new one....or does it sound like a download issue, or does it sound like an install issue? I can't remember how to in-authorize a computer. Is that done from the Cakewalk site, or do I have to manually in-authorize it from the laptop itself. Thanks, and any suggestions will be appreciated! Don

I'm pretty sure you can have SONAR on several computers simultaneously as long as you only use it on one at a time. Others may come along and weigh in differently, but I think that's right.

jgpEvery time I try to open X2 on the new laptop I get a system error sign and it shuts the computer down Next time it happens grab a screenshot of the message or write it down so you can research it. Im not sure this is a Sonar thing TBH. it could be but shut downs are usually due to driver errors or hardware failures.

There is no unauthorization procedure. And there was no single report that Sonar has refused future authorization after reaching some magic limit. CakeWalk EULA is strict, mentioning 2 computers only. But it was confirmed by CakeWalk staff many times in this forum, till you do not use more then one Sonar in parallel, it is ok to have it installed on all your computers. The authorization is to stop working pirated accounts, not to restrict legal users. Many of us will leave Sonar train in no time if that is changed... But... X2 had no online authorization at all. So your problem simply can not be the authorization.

I have had at times 4 copies of Sonar on different computers in my house , I like having them only so I can help on the forum and it's handy to open Sonar to verify where things are. I only ever work on my main DAW and occasionally live recordings to my Laptop. My belief is you are playing by Cakewalks rules as long as only one person is ever using the software.. Only thing you need to remember is to de authorize Melodyn before you can re install. I changed hard drives once and didn't do this but the kind folks at Celemony fixed it for me but warned not to make a habit of it. Addictive Drums you can do any time using the on line installer. We all know this all to well from windows updates changing our computer id.

Maybe I'm thinking of another program, but seems like I had to unauthorized one computer for some reason a while back, and I thought it was something to with SONAR. Obviously not. I'm trying to play by the rules, and never have but one going at a time, and have never sold a computer with SONAR on it. (Ironically, my introduction to Cakewalk was through a friend who had been given a bootleg copy of Guitar Tracks 2, at least ten years ago. I think it had 8 tracks and no MIDI. I tried to buy a copy, but Cake had gone to GT 3 by then. Since then, I think I've bought GT 3, 4, Music Maker 5 and the next one or two versions, Home Studio, 8.5, X1, X2, and now Platinum. So, that bootleg copy I saw at a friends led to quite a few legal purchases!) For the update, I went through the installs again and I think one did not install. Now, I think I have it all installed, and now I can successfully open X2, which is still one of my favorite programs. There was no way to get a screen shot of the ERROR message since I got the blue screen and it said it was collecting data and would restart, and I lost all keyboard and mouse function. I did take a picture on my phone if anyone wants to see it, but I'm not sure if I can post it on here or not. However, it doesn't say much more than what I just mentioned here. I opened X2 again before I hit "Post" here, and it is still working fine. Thanks for the insight! Don

Melodyne and Addictive Drums both require auth. IIRC, it is 2 PCs for Melodyne and 3 PCs for AD2.

I think Rapture was causing it. X2 crashed a few more times after my post here. I opened Platinum and it wanted me to disable Rapture but I didn't, and as soon as I clicked to continue, the computer crashed. I saw something similar when opening X2 later and hit continue and it crashed immediately. Now, I've uninstalled Rapture and have not had a crash. I need to give it more time and open and close X2 and Platinum more to see if the crashes have stopped now that Rapture is uninstalled. So far, so good. Usually, when you click a program and the system crashes instantly, it's the program that caused it. I hope the uninstall of Rapture is all that was wrong. DS

Why on earth would you use X2 when you have Platinum... X2 was full of bugs. They sorted it out at X3e. I've never seen anyone else complain about Rapture crashing Sonar so this is all weirdness. I've never used Rapture so it would be no loss to me if It didn't work.

X2 crashed again. Platinum is still fine. Still trying to pinpoint the trouble.

If crashes are with blue screen, that is NOT Sonar nor plug-in crashing. That is some driver, probably audio driver. Check settings there, check if the driver is the latest. CW has modifies things between X2 and Platinum, so it can happened that Platinum is not inducting the driver crash while X2 does.

Is your Windows maintenance and your audio driver and system drivers maintenance up to date? If not, that could cause some issues for any of the applications installed, but certainly for X2. What are you doing in X2 when it crashes? Are you just launching X2 and it dies before you even get to loading a project? And, what happens if you open Sonar in its Safe Mode? (Hold Shift down when launching Sonar). Does it die then? And lastly, like others ahead of me in the thread, why on Earth would you still want to use X2, when Platinum is SOOOOO much more advanced, as well as more stable? (just curious - X2 should be able to be opened and used if you want to do so, but even so, Platinum is WAY better than X2, for lots and lots of reasons). Bob Bone

This is a new laptop, so I'm still getting things set up. I do get a sign about the interface, so I need to make sure that driver is current. The crashes are sporadic. I'll open X2 and leave it open and sooner or later I will get the blue screen and it says it's collecting data and when it reaches 100% is shuts off and re-opens. DS

No surprise, that's exactly what to expect from X2. This forum was post after post about crashes back then. I stayed with 8.5 until X3 came out and the complaints diminished to a dull roar. Forget it. Use Plat.

Uninstall all your Sonars. Clear the registry of all entries. Reinstall X2 first with all updates, then Plat. Do full installs for both. I have seen where one version install affects another in ways that are unexplainable.

I checked, and Platinum recognizes my little Focusrite 2i2, but X2 does not. I can't understand why Platinum sees it but X2 doesn't. I've added the Focusrite and it shows up in the Devices and Printers window, but I can't find a way to make X2 see it.
That's the latest. DS
