How to create multiple 'simple instrument track' with VSTi?
Hello. I'm using X2 and wonder if there is a method to create multiple 'simple instrument track' with VSTi that has multiple audio output such as Kontakt, Play, Stylus, Omnisphere, Engine, etc. Simple instrument track is one track that has both audio and midi track so it is more convenient than saperated two tracks(1 audiot track + 1 midi track). If 3 instruments are loaded in Kontakt and they are assigned to individual audio output (1,2 and 3,4 and, 5,6), only 1,2 output works with simple instrument track and I can't make 2 more simple instrument track for audio output 3,4 and 5,6. I searched the forum and found that creating simple instrument track for multiple audio output is not possible in X1. Is it still impossible in X2? or is there any tip, tricks, alternative method? Please give me some advice. Thanks

According to many forum users here, simple instrument tracks have various issues (I myself know a very annoying issue relating to Solo button grouping). So if you like the way it displays only one midi track in the Track view and only one audio track in the Console view (which I do), use the regular midi & audio tracks for Kontakt, etc. and hide all audio tracks in the Track view and hide all audio tracks in the Console view and save as a screenset (which I do).

There is no reason to fix simple instruments tracks. Use separate MIDI and separate audio tracks for multiout synths. If you use the synth rack and have the synth property dialog popup you can select just how the synth should be inserted in the project.

FWIW, I use the synth rack almost exclusively. This allows me to treat a soft synth just as I would a hardware synth. I just add MIDI tracks and point to the soft synth and set the channel I want to use. If you've never used hardware, this might not make any sense to you, but it is great for me. Regards, Dan

ljhak Thanks for the advice. I hope that Cakewalk release new patch with some improvement in simple instrument track, etc. Think about it: The purpose of SITs is to get the MIDI and audio output on one track to save space. If you use a VST with 16 outputs, which means 16 different instruments each having it's own MIDI track, how could they be packed on one track?? You don't record your guitar on the same track with bass and drums because you want to edit them separately. It's the same thing. I don't quite understand what you're aiming at.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

It may seem like a simple idea to create a set of pairs of tightly coupled midi tracks and audio outs of a synth that supports multiple outs. But it really doesn't work that way down below. There is nothing in the world of VSTi's and tracks that can force the midi on one and only one track to generate audio to one particular output of several. Each instance of a synth has only one midi input port, and it is completely up to the synth to assign incoming midi events to particular audio outputs; the host has no control. A synth could route output by midi channel, by keyboard range, or even by keyswitch or other controllers. There is just no API for the host to control routing of midi to particular outputs of a single instance of a synth. Simple instrument tracks are possible only by the restriction of allowing only one midi track to be assigned to the (lone) midi input port of a synth that is configured with just one audio output. [That said, simple instrument tracks still have some flaws in the way their controls work, and it would be nice if they would be improved.] (Edit: it needed paragraphs)
