How to cut/paste a specific range of notes to another track, maintaining the start space ?

For example, I have a midi drum track and I want to extract out just the snare to another track.

From the piano roll, I can click on a specific piano key (for the snare note) and all the snare notes shall be selected. I can then proceed to cut and paste it to another track.

Problem is, after pasting to a new track, the first snare note will be defaulted to beat 1, measure 1, even though on the original track, the snare may be a little further away from measure 1. In another word, all spaces before the snare is truncated.

How to cut/paste a range of notes, while maintaining their original position ?

Yes, your suggested method work well for quantized notes. Thanks.

However, I would see some problem placing the now time for the first note that may not be quantized - it will work, but one needs to manually make sure it's accurate when snap to grid is off.

My current work around is to copy the whole track and remove unwanted notes.

I do this kind of copy and paste all the time. Use a couple steps - it's easy once you've done it once or twice.

1. Select your notes - example as described above.
2. In the Event Inspector (if you have it showing) at the top the screen you'll see the starting note's exact measure beat tick. Let's say it shows 15:02:047.  Remember that. You can also remember just 15 2 47
3. Select Copy
4. For paste use control alt v (paste special)
5. The dialog box asks you to specify the track and what time you want to paste it. Let's say you want to paste it in measure 23 at the same place.  Enter in 23 2 47.

1. In the PianoRoll select the notes. 2. Close PR. 3. Look at the clip, it is now partially selected (grayed). 4. Hold Shift and drag the clip to another track.

This is a good method - when you do this, make sure snap is set to "move by" (not move to) and set snap resolution to measures.  The notes will be copied to the destination while retaining the relative position within the measure.

I've just found another convenient way to do this.

1. Make sure the clip position/data isn't locked (It doesn't work if locked).
2. In the Piano Roll view, select the notes.
3. Press the numpad key "5." This will open Preferences.
4. Do nothing and close Preferences.
3/4. Close the Piano Roll view.
5. Press the numpad key "2" to move the notes to the next track, or "8" to the previous track.

I don't know why this works, though :) 

Edit: Sorry, Step 3 & 4 were unnecessary. Just close the Piano Roll view and do Step 5.
