How to determine the value of a 1998 Collector's Edition Telecaster?
Hi all, I have a friend looking to sell one, but while Fender said they were making 1,998 of them, it appears they made less than 1,000 and they don't show up for sale often. That's making finding a value a challenge. Any ideas?

I'm not an expert, but I don't believe most "limited edition" (later model) Fender's add much to the value over otherwise similar models. I have a beautiful 50th Anniversary P-bass from the same time period of which there were supposedly only a few hundred made, and in the discussions on TalkBass about this model I don't recall any evidence that it is particularly desirable or coveted compared to other American P-basses. Have you looked on www.tdpri.com/ ?

That's what I tried but there hasn't been one recent enough to appear. :/ I did search about a month ago and saw one sell for about $1,100. I would like to have more evidence before I consider an offer.

In 2015 the guitar is a used guitar regardless of it being a part of a collectors edition. You grandchildren may have better luck selling it as something special. If you look at reverb.com, Craigs list, Ebay, etc. You'll get a pretty good idea what people are asking and getting. Most stuff online sells for less than asking. You have to buy what YOU value, not what the manufacturer says you should value.

I totally agree with what you are saying. I've never owned a tele and this is the first one I've played that made me want one. The collectors moniker doesn't add value in this case, and that is good. I wouldn't want to pay a premium for a collector piece. I just want to offer a fair value. I made a call to a local guitar shop I've spent a lot of money at and they gave me a rundown of the book value. I think I'm good with a number.
I wasn't planning on a guitar purchase but is is a nice guitar. :)

Selling is a matter of asking what YOU want and then taking offers for less. I wouldn't fuss or waist to much time as the internet will be all over the map with prices... It's one of thousands of used Telecaster guitars for sale. I'm in the market myself and finding most are under $1,000 if USA made.

I agree. It's a great guitar but I'm not in the market for one right now. I offered them about what a music store would pay them, but I told them what they could probably get selling it outright and offered to help guide them on selling it on-line if they want to take the time and make more money.

Guys lets face it, we've been played! Custom Shop, Limited Edition, Collectors blah blah blah. '68 RI, lizard green 3 color burst, tubular maple top; EXACT in every detail... Really? Remember when the boys at Gibby, FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT!, with the braz fret boards? Although I did play, and lust after, an '03 R9 that R&S had reliced. That bad girl was RIGHT in every detail. In an original Cali Girl (brown on the outside, pink in the middle) case, she would have fooled the best; she was that good! Tried to buy her, the seller (this was the Cal Vintage Show) didn't take Visa. I literally hugged the guy (you should have seen his face! I should have kissed him!). Thanked him for saving me like 6K. But, back to the program in progress; we've been, and are being, PLAYED! If she speaks to you and for you; buy her! But don't count on anything built since the 60's attaining some kind of "vintage" value. Gibson Inc. and pre-CBS Fender; otherwise you're just foolin' yourself. Oh and Brazilian Martins of course. Just my nickel98 boys, I was there remember T

Thanks Tom! I have been playing for -eeks- almost 30 years. I've bought and sold a lot of guitars and now have a stable of some really great instruments that I LOVE. I only stated that this was a "Collectors Edition" because that's what it's called - not because I was buying into that hype. It happens to be a really great tele and I've never owned a tele - nothing ever spoke to me. I just didn't want to overpay or offer something insulting. I agree that the hype around the collector's editions are just hype. :)

Is that a "real" Super Reverb or a RI? Oh, and that is the "Collectors" Tele; right? Frankly the SR is about the best amp Fender ever built. If they had left the Presence control on (and lost the Vibrato) the amp would be almost perfect! T

Hi Tom, That is the "Collector's Edition" 1998 telecaster. I'll get some better pics in the light today. Also, that is a real-deal 1964 Fender Super Reverb. It is the best amp I've ever owned and will be with me until I'm dead - or I lose my hands in some freak knife juggling accident! I think this amp is way under-rated, and I'm "super" glad to hear another person thinks the way I do about it!

While I'm not a big gold trip person - the mother of pearl markers are really nice. The neck has a good curve to it and is a joy to play. I've always thought of telecasters as country guitars, but this gets a fantastic rock tone - much to my surprise. I went in to GC and played a brand new $1,400 telecaster and this one just blew that away. I don't care for the flat necks, finish, and fretwork of the new ones...

I think you're looking at Abalone on the dots and oval there James. And yes it is (your new Tele) quite handsome (both my Grosh's have the Abalone dots). Boy did I totally misread your every post in this thread, I thought you were selling in the first post. Oh well, its the internet; right? We all know how that works!
