That is a great way but too tedious really- a well performing de-esser (the one I and Whyz mentioned is real good) set in a way that it doesn't really hinder the performance is the way to go-

I do manual editing when I find a spot that is out of control in general.

When you have an artist that s's the whole time, I wouldn't edit every S unless they paid me $50 an hour to do it. Plus, it isnt neces'S'ary.

That being said, to each their own. If I thought my method would hinder a track, I wouldnt do it, period.

I think you need a de-esser, but, have you ever tried an RE-20 for rap? I use it for a lot of stuff and it doesn't seem to be quite as sibilant as some mics. Broadcasters and narrators love it. If you don't have an RE-20, it is a good investment. You can use it for narrators, rap, bass singers, and other vocal applications. You can also hang it in front of a guitar amp and not have to worry about the sound pressure. Some people like it for kick drum. My only caution is that you may need a good preamp with vocals to get all the level you want. Let's see if bitflipper or fastbikerboy have any thoughts on this. They are pretty reliable.

...great thread folks.... lots of entertainment along with some very useful info. +1 for finding a good plug to take the pain out of repeat S issues and another +1 for off-axis techniques with lower sibilance accentuating mics. Music without passion is like cutting your toe nails. Cheers all.

Earlier I posted my boring by-hand editing method for fixing sibilance.  I stand by it.  No job is "too tedious" when it comes to getting my music projects the way I want.  But I'm not making money at it.  People on the thread who want the quickest, easiest way, saying they'd have to be paid a lot to do it by hand - they're speaking from the viewpoint of recording and mixing as Work, as a Job - and those two words are joy-killers.  Of course a pro wants the easiest fix for things like this, even if a slower by-hand method will yield better results.
