How to enable S/PDIF out on Roland Octa Capture
My Focusrite VRM box shows an open circuit between the VRM and the Octa Capture. I don't have another unit with Digital S/PDIF so I can't try the VRM on that (I have changed cables and that didn't make any difference). It looks like S/PDIF is enabled all the time. Is this the way its configured or do I need to do something in the configuration to get the output? The Roland manual wasn't any help. Jack

This may be no help at all, since I don't have the same interface, but on my MOTU S/PDIF is enabled via the interface's virtual control panel. If I have any doubt as to whether or not it's enabled I only have to switch the interface off -- SONAR will hang on startup or playback because it's waiting on S/PDIF to clock it.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I've tried all the (limited) options available on the Octa-Capture software control panel and nothing helped. I also did a complete reset/reinstall of the Octa-Capture and the VRM box and that didn't help either. Actually, the problem may be in the VRM Box but without another device with digital S/PDIF I'm lost. I do have Optical S/PDIF but that doesn't do any good.

Ok, I'm going by memory here, from when I tried out an Octa a while back, so may not be correct. But iirc, S/PDIF uses ins 9,10 and outs 9, 10, and there is a setting to enable/disable the S/PDIF in, and a setting for whether to clock the Octa from its S/PDIF in (when enabled) or from its internal clock. Or, maybe one of those settings was "Auto", can't recall exactly. But I do recall it was pretty simple, and you could slave to an external clock source via the S/PDIF in. So, iirc the Octa's S/PDIF out is always active, but the S/PDIF in can be set to on or off and also set to slave or internal clocking (or maybe "auto"?). Do you have anything connected to the Octa's S/PDIF in? Is your Octa set to internal sync/master? I do recall that the i/o routing and assignment was fairly complex, due to the internal mixer arrangements, and you could have the ins connect straight through, iow, directly to the corresponding outs, or have certain mix outs routed to certain fixed outs, or assign desired mix outs to desired outs. Anyhow, assuming you have your desired output tracks assigned to outs 9,10 and have internal clocking set on your Octa, your VRM should slave to the Octa's S/PDIF out. Does your VRM have a clock or master/slave select setting? If so, make sure it is set to "external" or "slave".

The VRM Box and the Octa-Capture worked at one time. The VRM Boxes display panel shows connection status and it shows the S/PDIF link as not connected. That is how I determined there was some sort of interface problem - whether the Octa-Capture or the VRM box.

Update. Its working! After the "umpteenth" time uninstalling and reinstalling the VRM Box its now working. I also rebooted the PC and tried it and it still works. Chalk this up to "FM"...
