How to get SONAR X1 to wirelessly recognize my iPhone using Mackie Control and rtpMIDI?

I'm trying to get wireless control of my SONAR X1 with my iPhone using Mackie Control and rtpMIDI. I have an app on my iPhone called "DAW Remote" and it states that it works with any DAW that has Mackie Control (such as SONAR) and even specifically states that it works with SONAR... but I can't get it to work?

I installed rtpMIDI and set it up to connect to my iPhone. It recongized it, and so now my iPhone is not connected to my PC via rtpMIDI. So then I went into SONAR > Preferences > MIDI > Control Surfaces and clicked the yellow start to add a new controller. I added the Mackie Control and set the input and output to my iPhone. I hit apply and close, and returned to my project. However, it looks like SONAR is waiting for my iPhone's "DAW Remote" to respond, but when I enter the app on my phone, it says it is waiting for my DAW to respond.

Anyone know how to get the two to connect? Has anyone been able to get "DAW Remote" to work successfully for themselves?

This may be a dumb question, but is your PC on the network? And wireless turned on - on the phone?

I've never used this Mackie Control - but I can get the "Omni TR" software on my ipad to talk to Omnisphere in SONAR.

They want you to install a thing called "bonjour" on the PC, then my PC is hard wired in to my wireless router and the ipad is connected via wireless.

It sounds like you might just be missing one step to get the two devices to talk to each other...

No idea about phones running as controllers but...

If it reacts anything like an actual Mackie with sonar, try having the app on the phone running before you start Sonar,

I'm using DAW Remote on my phone and tablet to control SONAR, but they're both Android devices. On my setup the control surface isn't listed as the phone or tablet themselves, but another name. Strangely enough, I believe it's "Studio 1", but I'm at work now and can't remember for sure. I'll check it when I get home tonight and let you know. I do know that a lot of folks have issues with rtpMIDI.

Yep, I did make sure they are on the same wireless network and that wireless is enabled on both. As I mentioned above, I was able to get my phone and PC to connect with each other on rtpMIDI, which would not have worked if they weren't on the same network with wireless enabled on both. Now I'm just having problems getting my phone to connect with SONAR itself...

I didnt know you could actually install bonjour on a PC, I just installed rtpMIDI, which is supposed to emulate what bonjour does for Macs. The interface even looks similar. But I'll look into this

I just tried this, but no luck. I've tried loading SONAR then the app after... tried app first then SONAR... same results either way

Yes the name listed on the control surface is whatever the name you choose when you set up rtpMIDI... could very well be "Studio 1" you can change the name to whatever you want. And I do use rtpMIDI, but that's because I thought that was the only thing there was. Are you using something else?

Yes if you could check on this stuff when you get to work and let me know, I would really appreciate it!!

Yeah I couldn't get both of the connections needed in rtpMidi to work either. I'd get one and then a few error msgs. Ah 1st-gen technology...

What he said...except replace iPhone with iPad... The weird thing is I could get AC-7 to work with other DAWs...just not SONAR.

Yes, I can connect my phone to my rtpMIDI.

Let's say I name my session "Studio-A" on rtpMIDI. When I open the app on my phone, I see the option for "Studio-A" so I can select it. It then tells me to open my DAW.

So I open SONAR and go to preferences > MIDI > control surfaces and add a Mackie Control with the input and output set to "Studio-A". Then I hit apply and close. So now both SONAR and my phone app are waiting for each other... but they are not connecting.

Ok we are going around in circles, I am doing everything I can to help,

So is Sonar seeing the what have you called your IPhone, and have you in the midi in out clicked these connection's.

the next thing to try is by pass the wireless network and try connecting through USB.

    sorry I keep popping off,

Now I am really anoying questions.

I am asking the USB to see if we have a wireless problem,

Have you gone into your Firewall settings allowed the program through??

Next does the program have a Sonar setting??

If neither of these things work, tell me and I will check in tomorrow, I'm knocking off for the eveing.

    Peace Neb

I don't think it's a wireless problem, since rtpMIDI connects with the app just fine. Also, the firewire shouldn't be a problem since,  again, rtpMIDI connects with the app just fine.

No, the program does not have a specific SONAR setting. But it's supposed to work with any DAW that has Mackie Control, such as SONAR.

    First and last:

    It was in other topic.
SONAR wants to "shake hand" with any controller defined as MACKIE.
And SONAR uses specific SysEx to do it.
So now you have the idea. If controler will not respond, you will not have communication.
This issue - as far as I tested - is SONAR-specific. Don't ask me why Cakewalk likes to complicate things, but its like this.

I've seen quite elegant solution in other topic a month ago, but I can't remember details. It was something with making MIDI loop, recording specific SysEx in MIDIOX and sending it to Sonar during setting up controller (you do it just once, not every time you start Sonar). After this, you should change MIDI ports and it should work fine.

In AC-7 you can try to switch between control surfaces during setup with Sonar, I've seen description somewhere that it helps. Read carefully AC-7 developer's site, FAQ/help and manuals.

btw. there are better (and more expensive - unfortunately) control surfaces - even with V-window in which you can see and edit a part of screen... Try V-control FREE. If it will work, then you can upgrade and buy desired modules.

I have an iPhone and using rptMIDI and AC-7 have remote control access to SONAR X1 x64
I'm using Win 7 x64 and I had to have Bonjour installed and running to do any wireless communication between the phone and my PC.
