How to hear Session Drummer through my computer speakers

Hello folks I am new to this, but I am a drummer is who is trying to learn this stuff. I have Sonor X1 Producer, I also have Dimension Pro, Beatscape and some other outside stuff like Guitar Rig 4, and Bome's Mouse & Keyboard software.
I am running a hp laptop G62 2.2 GHz dual core with 3 Gigs of DDR3 RAM, but it can support 8. It also has a 3.2 GT system Bus. It has that crappy Realtek Audio in it though, but for right now all I want to do is get the sound coming through my headphones plugged into the laptop or the laptop speakers, like when I am playing around with the drums in Session Drummer, I want to be able to hear stuff like when I hit on the drums or put beats together using Sonor, with my headphones plugged into the computer. So could you guy's tell me how to do this ?

sure - but you're not going to be happy with the results.  your latency using the realtek is going to be very high and it will make it pretty much impossible to play the electronic drums while monitoring Session Drummer.

have you set up sonar to use the realtek at all?  when you first run sonar it asks if you want to run soundcard tests - that's necessary.  so if you can hear output from audio then all you need to do is insert Session Drummer as a softsynth, load a kit and then set up the MIDI track input as the MIDI input for your drum controller.

how do you have the drum controller connected to the laptop?  usb?  do you have the device selected in the OPTINOS>MIDI DEVICES so that you're able to select it as an input in the MIDI track?

Thanks Beagle, I more than likely will have to retrace my steps, where should I go first ? Oh and I am going to get another audio card or something, because I will not be able to tolerate that high latency very long. But I want to be able to use Sonor for my band also. So where should I start to correct this in case I did it wrong ?

I'm a master at building a pc daw, but i have no idea about laptops. I'm thinking you are going to have to buy some type of outboard sound device to hook it all up to. Firewire or maybe that new usb 3.0 will be fast enough to get the latency to near zero.  plus if you want to record a band using sonar and a laptop, you definitely need the ability to record multiple tracks at once and the realtek will not do. I'm sure someone on here knows laptops and external units well enough to point you in the right direction. sorry i cant be of more help.

Hey thanks 7 string, you are doing great because I am starting to learn. I have a Dell desk top dual core 2.2 3 gig RAM. But I want to be mobile so I have to learn what the pros on this board does when dealing with notebooks. I am dedicating this new laptop to nothing but music stuff, I even have Virtual DJ 7 on it because sometimes I DJ on the side. But I am going to get what ever it takes to get this thing running right. I also have to learn how to use Guitar Rig 4 because I do play enough guitar to compose some things. So I want this media notebook to be complete. So if there is anybody out there using a notebook for your Cakewalk Sonor, please feel free to chime in.

it'll drive me mad, so I'll get it out of the way .. sonor is a brand of drums?!?!.. sonar is the software by cakewalk

you need to figure out what you need, how many mic inputs.. you drum , so record em ? via a mixer ? or you need 4 in's etc

it's a laptop.. so you have 2 real options usb / firewire..

the other thing to think is in 2-3 years, will it still be doing what you want.

I don't have firewire on this pc , so it's a bit more straight forward the choice.. and it depends on your budget

    http://www.dv247.com/comp...re/laptop-sound-cards/
    http://www.dv247.com/comp...ire-audio-interfaces-/

since your in the US , have a look at sweetwater site.. for example .. I was tempted to say guitar centre also (but maybe you could correct it to center for me.hehe)

but as for GR it's like a real fx. you just add it to the audio signal pretty much

even though you don't play keys... get yourself a 25 key one at least.. it's not just for keys. you can use it for a wealth of things besides.. lots on here play guitar but would admit they need one also..

Fog I do have Edirol R-09HR by Roland, which I want to learn how to use with Cakewalk Sonor. I was using it just to playback band practice, but now i want to use it for doing more stuff.

if you want a lot of analog inputs and low latency and portability, look at m-audio fast track ultra 8R USB, MOTU Ultralite Hybrid Mk3, RME Fireface UC

Thanks Beagle, that is a nice unit, I just can't lay out the 500 to get one of those right now. Or maybe I can find one on ebay, or craigslist I am going to check it out.

that device will reduce your latency for electronic drums, yes.

you will not be able to record analog drums with it, however, unless you run all mics thru a mixer and record only the stereo output of the mixer.

that's just FYI - you can always upgrade your soundcard later to get more inputs for analog.

Ok I am back nice site, and very glad to hear that you are Christian. I am too, and my Gospel band is why I am trying to get this stuff together. I do have a Yamaha EMX 512C mixer, and I am going to get a better sound card I do not like Realtek sound cards. And I also have a my ole trusty Peavey mixer, but it is only six channels and does not have all the features that the Yamaha has plus the Yamaha is 12 channels and it has it's own 500 watt power. I also have to learn more about using my Roland Edirol R-09HR

good deal.  the edirol will work to get you started and it will (likely) reduce your latency to an acceptable level for triggering Session Drummer with your electronic drums.

when you get some gospel stuff laid down make sure you send it to me to hear!

What is a good MIDI To USB cable I just got my YAMAHA keyboard back, so now I want to lean how to use it with X1 Producer. But I do not have a Midi cable. I even saw one with power over at Amazon.com. But it was only for a 32 bit, and I have a 64, and pluse one dude was saying that it had high latency.

well - don't listen to that one dude because he doesn't know what he's talking about.  the midi cable will have absolutely nothing to do with latency.  that's determined primarily by your soundcard and drivers and then your CPU speed.  MIDI data is only 31.25k which is a lot less than USB 2 delivers (480Mbit/sec).  the MIDI cable will have absolutely no effect on latency.

I have seen a few problems where yamaha keyboards won't necessarily work with anything except yamaha MIDI/USB cables, but I've seen less of that lately, so things may be better now.  I know that I have used a yamaha keyboard with an m-audio UNO MIDI/USB cable successfully on winxp.

one of those will likely be fine.
