    Hi,
this Help file is for Sonar 4 but I used it for Sonar 8 and it works O.K. hope it helps.

    --------
"If you don't wanna unlock(buy) the cakewalk mp3 encoder, you can invoke the Lame mp3 encoder directly from S4. With this you don't need to first export to wav and then encode to mp3. Remember that the Lame mp3 encoder is high quality, open source and free.

    1. Download and install the lame encoder. Just search 'lame mp3 encoder download' in Google
    2. Open Sonar 4 and go to Tools -> Cakewal Ext. Encoder Config.
    3. In the Friendly Name Field write: Lame Mp3 Encoder
    4. In the Extension field write: .mp3
    5. In the Description field write whatever you want
    6. In the Path field write the path where the Lame encoder is. That is where lame.exe and lame_enc.dll are, usually C:\Program Files\Lame
    7. In the Command Line field write:
    lame -b 192 -m j %I %O
    8. Press Save button.
    9. Uncheck Keep Wave File
    10. dat'sit!

This will export to a 192Kbps, joint stereo mp3 file. If you want 128Kbps, replace 192 with 128 in the Command Line field. The next time you click on File->Export->Audio... in S4 you'll find 'Lame mp3 encoder' as a type of audio.

The Command Line field is where you specificate the options for the Lame encoder (lame.exe). The form is:
    lame <options> <infile> <outfile>
where options can be among others:
    -b : bitrate
    -m : stereo mode
for more information go to the lame help. This procedure has been tested with LAME 3.94 and S4 Producer".

Do not know if this has something to do with it, but be sure to run Sonar "As administrator". (right click on the .exe file --- Run as administrator.

Never could get mine to work but I'm sure it's just a path issue that you have to nail down. It could be a Windows 7 64 bit thing also as that's when my problems with it started. I can tell you this though. The download off of the LAME sites are a .tz.tar which are really a Linux file. You can download a Windows file but the main problem is that this download is not an executable download like most programs. You have to have the lame.Enc_.dll and the lame .exe in a seperate folder and point SONAR to that foler. I did it several and couldn't get it to launch. I read every thread on here and did every single step all of the others said and it didn't work. I put it in program files>Cakewalk>Shared Utilities>LAME folder and even went as far as to copy the whole configuration box and pasted it. I used the SONAR CD to set up and spent 4 days before finally just paying the $19 for the SONAR mp3 key and do specify 64 bit or you'll get the 32 bit download and have to get the 64 if you are using 64. If anyone does figure it out please let me know so I can try it and good luck to you sir and sorry for the rant.

Did you use your Sonar CD to import the specific file for that encoder?
