How to make Mp3s with iTunes?

You guys said it can be done. You said ( I searched the forums) iTunes had an MP3 encoder.

I downloaded the stuff (some CDStack1.1.dmg thingy) from Apple. Stuck it in a folder called GEAR.

Opened it up and it looked weird--just a computer-looking blob thingy. What am i supposed to do with it?

    Hi-

A .dmg file is a compressed file for Macs, not PCs, AFAIK. What exactly is it you're trying to do?

    Export my audio to MP3.

My paid-for-legit-2/25/2008 encoder from Cakewalk said my trial version expired, unlock a code. Next time, it didn't even emerge and tell me anything. Just tood me up--a real no-show.

I called customer service. They're e-mailing me another one now.

I don't know what the problem is, but I sure would like a back-up. I mean, when you want an MP3 of your latest superproject right away to e-mail to the family to prove your genius, and to convince them that you're not at home wasting away your life and passing up a paycheck for nothing--well, you just want it NOW.

You can have Itunes convert to an mp3 when it imports a CD. It is in the Edit/Preferences/General and look for import settings.

Yep, in itunes on my macs i just right-click on the file and select "Create MP3 Version." Works great.

I think the default on installation of iTunes is AAC. You have to go into the preferences and change it to MP3. (I don't have iTunes at work to get you the terms).

Then when you import a WAV export from SONAR into iTunes you can right click and convert to MP3.

When I right-click my song, my i Tunes version only offers to create an AAC version. Creating MP3s isn't even listed.

OOps. Posted this after yours above. Didn't see yours yet.

Hmm... you can set up the LAME encoder for Sonar ... just search using "lame" here to get the info needed to set everything up.

    Lame can be downloaded from
    - http://lame.sourceforge.net/

I went into preferences and looked through the tabs for resetting the AAC to MP3. Couldn't find it. It should've been in the Advanced tab, because that's where the Create AAC Version option is on the page where you play the music, above the play buttons.

    It doesn't matter anymore, because--

    AHEM!
This is a plug for Cakewalk:

They e-mailed me my encoder. Told me to save it to a CD or USB drive for future use.

Now, warn't that just grand of 'em? And within just a few hours of calling 'em, too. With deeRECtions, no less.

Thanks, Mister Lars Wicklund of Cakewalk Customer Service.

It won't ruin it but you've got to uninstall the Startup process that Apple puts in FOR NO REASON other than to make it look like iTunes starts faster. Apple's code is as bad as Adobe's code for bloat for sure. But for those of you who keep iTunes on it can be converted.

When I uploaded the latest iTunes update a few months ago, it quit giving me the option to convert to mp3's. I may try what you guys have suggested here to see if it will work again. Although I'm using Audacity now anyway...

I know CJ. Par for the course here which is cool.

I was clarifying for those who may have iTunes for their iPod.

I'm totally with CJ on this one.

You could prolly get MSWord to encode an mp3 via a macro too but it don't mean it's a good way to go.

LAME is free and it ain't LAME
