How to open .rar file?
I downloaded the library for Komplete and it came in .rar compression. I thought- Windows 8 would unzip any folders- .zip or .rar, but it asks me what program to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can use the free program 7zip, it will uncompress .rar files, as well as other formats. www.7-zip.org

Thank you for your reply. How about Win Zip? http://www.winzip.com/prodpagewz.html I thought I had it installed but I don't see it any more. I remember- it was counting days installed and never open at the end, or I had to wait for it to open. Is the 7 Zip works same annoying way? So Windows 8 would unzip .zip files but not .rar? Thank you.

Also- for 7 Zip- it says, that 32 bit version is .exe, but 64 bit version is .msi? Does it makes sense? I also see links on the right to newer versions- does it look valid to you- it takes me to some forum.

They are the different types of installers. Use the 64bit msi installer for 64bit Windows. The links are good, they take you to the SourceForge site and automatically start the download from there.

Thank you for your replies. Scook, do you mean the main link to 7-Zip 9.20 version or on the site, to 7-Zip 9.30? It says it developmental version and link goes to the forum.

If you're lost on what version to install, go here http://www.7-zip.org/download.html and give the second link (.msi 32-bit for x86 systems) a try. I personally use 7-zip over the others for the sake that it doesn't nag me to purchase anything. Also, it's super helpful if you need to break large files up into smaller volumes (I often have to do this if I'm trying to move an .iso onto my external hard drive since it's formatted as Fat32 for Windows and Mac compatibility but won't accept files over 4 GBs in size). If you want to get really geeky with it, you can also use it to encrypt and password protect important digital documents (taxes, etc.). I'm sure there's some genius who knows how to break that code though. Anyhow, I like 7-zip :)

I would suggest the link to the 9.20 version - changes to 7-zip are incremental and it's unlikely that the developmental version is introducing new features. The program has been available for many years and has many users.

Um... Thanks you for the reply. Shouldn't I get 64 bit as my system is 64 bit?

Sorry, yes if you're on 64-bit then go for it. I read Windows XP SP 3 in your signature and assumed 32-bit.

vladasyn I downloaded the library for Komplete and it came in .rar compression. Since when does Komplete come as a set of compressed .rar files?

Ryan - Vlada has multiple computers, and the XP one is for old stuff as needed. She is running a 64-bit machine as her standard music computer these days. Bob Bone

I too download for Komplete, and never had had anything but Windows-readable compressed folders, so I too am confused as to what you would have downloaded from Native Instruments in rar format. Bob Bone

Thank you for your advice and help. Are you confused or curious? :) I am downloading Sonokinetic sounds and I can not wait to unRaR it and hear what they got.
