How to set up Windows for Cakewalk. Any news for Windows 10 April 2018 Update?

Now that the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and people are downloading it on their machines, is there any new in how to set up Windows for DAW/Cakewalk?

It would be nice to get some easy points of what to do to set up Windows 10.

But also, a in depth of what can be done on a more deeper level.

And it would be nice if people could as question too.

Some topics:
- How to get the lowest latency.
- How to make the PC most reliable.
- How to make the PC most secure.
- Do the old rules still apply?
- (For non-pros) How to juggle between DAW settings and Games/Others effectively.

Yeah there is some links on YouTube about setting up Windows for DAW. But can we not discuss this here to?

I don't think the new Windows update changes much at all for getting the most performance etc out of your PC. The usual still applies - switch off the services you don't need, make sure your audio folders are exempted from your AV etc.

The biggest change in the update is the ability to manage your privacy settings at a more granular level.

But as I've said in a different thread, although the update went smoothly, there was some aftermath:

AD2 (as usual with Win updates) needed re-authorising
My Focusrite drivers needed re-installed.... four times before Windows recognised them.
My folders-as-drive mappings disappeared and had to be added again to the registry

There were no specific CbB problems whatsoever though, which is good news.

As far as switching between a game machine and a DAW is concerned, IMHO this is a bad bad idea. If you really must have your games on the same PC, then make your PC dual boot between DAW & Game mode (i.e two copies of the operating system). You want your DAW as clutter-free as possible.

- Go to SETTINGS, Personalisation, Colours .. scroll down, turn off TRANSPARENCY EFFECTS

- Type Performance in Search, select  "Adjust the appearance and performance of windows " ..  Set VISUAL EFFECTS to "Adjust for Best Performance" .. However recheck "Smooth edges of screen fonts". APPLY

These tips basically stop windows effects and useless fancy stuff that themselves use up your valuable resources better used for Cakewalk in my opinion.

I also noticed since recent win 10 updates my system fan has been whirring up alot more than usual. Did some research and found that MS RUNTIME BROKER can be the issue. Here is a link that describes a regedit method to disable that / reboot:

https://medium.com/@win10tricks/permanently-disable-runtime-broker-on-windows-10-2c91d6bd2fbb

Another one is MS Compatibility Telemetry. Here is a link describing that with multiple ways to disable:

https://tricksmaze.com/microsoft-compatibility-telemetry/

All these tips are at your own risk. I found the best way is to log any changes like this you make with a date so you can reverse if necessary. I use GOOGLE KEEP dated note to insert links like above and note the changes, keep tabs.

I might be speaking too soon but since doing the runtime broker change ( and then the telemetry change for good measure ) my system fan has calmed down.

So you are not using the settings in the BIOS? All my fans are sett there.

No Matter, nothing to do with that ...this is while windows is running. Software excessively using your CPU, heating up the system and making the fan go nuts. Runtime Broker for example can be running due to an errant app which in turn can use your CPU lots and then in turn speeding up / increasing fan usage.

As I said .. all above at your own risk. Log them if you try .. at least then you can revert back if needs be.

OK. That sound scary.

My former rig died because of "something". I really don't know what happened. But the water pump on my CPU cooler died because of this. One of the RAM channels died, and a Harddrive died too. All at once. BIOS got messed up too, so I hade to restore it the hard way only a few cards can do. By starting up without BIOS and just a BIOS restore function on the motherboard that read the new BIOS from a USB stick on the right USB slot.

I have found myself doing less and less with my OS. I disable the USB suspend mode. I turn off background processes I don't need. They seem to have stayed that way since day one.
Everything works after updates since last Aug.

Just installed CbB to my sons brand new W10 64 Dell laptop. Only did the 2 things listed above. He's using a Behringer X18 and we had no problems at all setting it all up.
He's pretty stoked to get Cakewalk free. He didn't know anything about that deal until I pointed it out .He's been shopping for a DAW for a few months wondering which one to purchase.

The only thing I've done (to every version of Win 10) is set the Power Plan to High Performance and disable fast start up.

But for security. do you trust Windows OneDrive for backup or do you use local backup?

For me I use both with redundancy.
I use OneDrive for backup, but it is only connected to a backup drive I have on the computer.
So I have:
C: Windows (500 GB m.2)
M: DAW files (1 TB SSD)
O: OneDrive (Normal Harddrive)

I only backup files to the OneDrive folder when I’m not working. But I also got a online backup program with unlimited storage. It is synchronizing/backing up as soon as the file is stored on the drives/folders I have set up for backup. It is just 2 click to turn it on pause, if I need to. But turning of the hibernating and so on had a greater impact on the latency.

Cakewalk was fine here after updating Windows 10 with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.
A few days later, I cleanly installed Windows 10 with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (ISO) and no problems.

I do full OS drive backups (disc images) with Macrium Reflect (free version).  I also do backups, after a recording session, of a Cakewalk project (manually by copying the Session folder to a backup drive).

I have One drive disabled and do not use any cloud based backup.  I'm "old school" having worked in my day job as computer tech/manager since "BPC" (Before PC's).
