How to simulate cymbal choke?

I am using Sonar Artist, and I am wondering how to use any of my drum kits (SI Drums, Session Drummer, etc.) to simulate the technique called a cymbal choke. This is the technique where the drummer stops the cymbal right after a hit. Here's a clip illustrating this:

Does anyone have any clever tricks or techniques on how to simulate this in Sonar? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most drum synths have a MIDI note assigned to choke cymbals, sometimes more than one for different cymbals or more/less 'aggressive' chokes.

Find cymbal choke samples, create an sfz file for them and load it into Session Drummer. Freesound.org has a few.

You can also fake it by volume automation. Turn down volume quickly (but not instantly), about 200 ms sounds pretty real. The advantage is that you are in full control of timing, unlike using samples for choked cymbals.

To prevent volume automation to be applied to the complete kit, either use a different instance of the drum kit for the cymbals only, or if available like in Session Drummer 3, use a different audio output channel.

+1 on searching for a sound on freesound.org!

This is what I did recently. Works perfectly. Just open the midi map, find the cymbal choke and replace original cymbal hit with it.

I suppose in many drum synths (at least in Addictive Drums) the cymbal choke is an independent sample. You add it after the cymbal to the exact time you want the cymbal to be choked, and it automatically cuts the cymbal sound, just like the closed HH cuts the open HH sound.

I haven't tried it in SI Drums, but in other programs I've been able to choke a cymbal by putting another cymbal hit where you want the choke, but with a velocity of '1'.  Often, it tricks the synth into thinking another note should be heard and they don't usually overlap when it's the same cymbal.  But since the next hit is '1', it really doesn't play anything you'll actually HEAR.
