How to sync metronome to song
I'm trying to do a cover of a song, and I'm wondering how to make the metronome and the song in time. For some reason any professionally recorded song isnt "whole number" tempo. When i try to adjust the tempo its always a little out of time, am i missing something? So fustrating lol Thanks! :)

Select the wav of the cover (assuming it's one long clip), open audiosnap, make sure it's enabled, select "Project follows Clip", and then you should be fine. Consult the reference guide for more info if you're not sure how to use AudioSnap.

There is also a chance that the song you are covering was not recorded to a metronome. But I think AudioSnap will handle this, right ba?

Billy is right. You could either use AudioSnap to actually quantize the song to be covered (the audio itself) or you can use "Set measure beat at now" to align SONAR's time-line with the audio of your reference track (probably would be my preference).

itllcometogether There is also a chance that the song you are covering was not recorded to a metronome. But I think AudioSnap will handle this, right ba? This is indeed often the case. Or sometimes the song was recorded to say "100.52" (although fairly rarely). Best thing (at least under some circumstances) is to drop in some "set measure/beat at now" points and have SONAR adjust the project tempo dynamically. This would be if you wanted to keep pretty much the same exact feel as the original. Now if you do in fact want a pretty hard quantized tempo for your cover version, then it might be best to use AS to actually quantize the original track to the grid.

Brandon Ryan [Cakewalk ] ...you can use "Set measure beat at now" to align SONAR's time-line with the audio of your reference track (probably would be my preference). That works fairly well in my Sonar 8.3.1 I've done it several times now with various pro recordings. The slight variations, or not so slight variations in tempo can be mapped out after some effort of working with AS. I've seen mentioned several times on the Forum that this particular function of AS isn't working in Sonar 8.5 though, that it was accidentally "broken" - ? Randy B.

OPs choice of words might indicate he's looking at the problem from a little bit wrong angle (??). The way I see it, you don't sync the metronome to the song. You change the project tempo to match the song or you change the songs tempo to match the project. A metronome of 65 bpm is playing in sync with a song of 130 bpm but the projects are in different tempo, which makes, say, PRV work a bit tricky. Well...I guess I'm splitting hair here...typical of me.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hi, Kalle - If the OP is able to follow Brandon's advice on post #5 and #6, then he'd be properly laying out the measures as they are played in the recording. The basic concept is easy enough to do - count the beats as it plays and hear where each new measure starts - that's what has to be lined up to the time line. The metronome will just follow suit. Dang. Missed my chance to have a direct conversation with Cakewalk on this... Brandon, I've posted many times that Set Measure/Beat at Now was broken by the 8.5.3 update, and no longer works correctly. I filed CWBRN-2568 on this soon after 8.5.3 was released, and it remains "Under Investigation". As it stands, SM/BAN is not really useful for setting more than one beat to establish a single fixed tempo, unless you are running 8.5.2 or earlier. Also, Set Project from Clip frequently miscalculates tempos by small, but significant, amounts, and therefore fails to align M:B:T properly to clip map beat markers. I have not yet filed a problem report on this.

MixMeister BPM Analyzer gives the BPM exactly and so if it's not a whole number, it shows you the number it is.

Hmm when i use audio snap, theres so maany markers, and I'm doing a cover of a song yes, and the markers are all in the wrong places and it just sounds messed up when I quantize to my metronome Is there no way to make the matronome fit the song? edit: WOW strikinglyhandsome1 you are amazing, worked! MixMeister BPM Analyzer did the trick :D I'm happy now
