How to take guitar audio and add deliberate distortion/overdrive

I would like to take an ordinary guitar audio track (say, from an acoustic guitar), and add deliberate distortion so my fifths and fourths sound full!

I know that to do this on an amplifier I'd just turn the input drive up high.

What effects do people recommend in Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer? An Audio FX? I tried a compressor but this does everything it can to prevent distortion.. Obviously pushing too much out the Master will give distortion but it will be a crude digital limit as opposed to a more analogue distortion.

Anyway, just curious!

you have to work within the confines of the tools and options you have.
if the your amp has the sound you want mic it.
if you cant do the above then do as mike above suggested. use a softsynth. cakewalk provides this in sonar and you can buy third party as well.
preoccupation with the difference between digital and analogue is wasteful. you may as well be talking about two different instruments to some people. use what sounds good even if it sounds like your banging on garbage cans.

Best in my book is IK Multimedia's Amplitube, its not cheap though. Another alternative is Native Instruments Guitar Rig, the LE version of which ships with the producer versions of Sonar.

If you want free check out stuff from ACME Bargig.

Its very hard to get a soft synth to sound like a real guitar, its not the tone, its the way you play it.

    Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

    this is very true.

The OP is talking about FX for real guitar audio tracks. So the real guitar is there already, he doesn't need a synth that sounds like a guitar.

We don't know what software he's using so we don't know what he already has, nor if he's willing to pay or looking for a freebie. X1 Studio and Producer surely include an amp sim, don't they??

At www.kvraudio.com there are plenty of both free and commercial ones.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

yes I know this. I don't know why your replying to me. is it because I called guitar rig an softsynth and not an audio effect. my mistake.
