How to update Firmware on new Motu?
Hey there This was hard, but I installed the Thunderbolt, connected Motu and it is seen by its user interface. The settings for audio look ok. and I got sound. I think, I may I like the Presonus sound better- MOTU sounds bright and flat- no depth- first impression before my ears got used to it. There is firmware that supposed to be updated, it says I would need 1.2.7 or higher. I have 1.2.8, and there is 1.2.9 update available but I don't know how to update because where I supposed to just click, it says, "Please, run Web App directly from the device over Ethernet to update." I don't understand what it means- what device? The web app is on Windows computer, it opened, computer is connected to Ethernet. I also downloaded file but I don't know how to get it in MOTU. If I launch Software Updater, it says, "Update available for listed below devices" and nothing listed there. Thank you.

I think you need make sure that you can talk to the Motu over Ethernet. I have one on order (an Ultralite AVB so I haven't actually used it, but based on what I have read that is what needs to happen.) Check out the thread on the Motu interface drivers for further details and/or post in there for help.

The easiest way to do it is to hook up the MOTU directly to your LAN. then open the webUI and the firmware update will be clicking 1 button on the device page ...
You can also do it offline by downloading and installing the firmware update manually ... instructions are at the MOTU site right where you download the firmware

Yeah, I could not understand how I can connect MOTU and Computer at the same time if I only have one Ethernet port on the computer. I guess I will just have to disconnect it from Internet and connect computer to MOTU for the update. Will be figuring out how to connect 2nd MOTU via AVB to first tonight. It says in manual to just connect it, but I saw some settings to tweak. Thank you.

You should have an Ethernet Router with at least 2 ports on it. I don't think you can connect the MOTU directly to the PC with a standard Ethernet Cable. It may work with a "crossover" cable, but a Router is what is needed.

Vlad - your PC must be connected to a router (for the Internet) - right? We'll, just connect the MOTU to the same router- there should be extra ports to plug in to. Thanks they will talk to each other...
My Ultralite AVB doesn't do firmware updates when it's set for DHCP though - I have to give it an ip address, then it's easy. You point your browser to the MOTU and you can either let it download the update - or download it yourself, and point to the file.
To set an ip address - check the manual, or we'll try to talk you through it here...

I got it, thank you for the tip. It says in Manual, "In the "New Update Available" banner, click on "More Information". I had the banner but no "More Information" Button when I open the app from the Start menu. But then it appeared when opened it from Task menu. Should not be different. Hope it is not one of those issues when it goes in and out of connection with computer. Will have to test more before I connect 16A to it, which going to be a challenge likely. Thank you.

I just download the file first (one less thing to go wrong) - then you can "update from file" - down by the bottom. When I had the DHCP problems, and it "lost connection", I could just switch the interfaceoff - and it came back up with the older firmware...

Everything is super easy with these AVB devices. You just need to connect via LAN cables ... BUT you need to RTFM, it takes about 5 minutes to read all there is about firmware updates and how to connect the devices (I believe there are also videos for the illiterate) ... it's all at the MOTU website

I got them connected but I don't see how to make audio from one go in to the other via Ethernet. There AVB Stream Connections and all of them say "None". When I updated the A16 unit (2nd unit), I selected it as "Studio Input Extender" and it supposed to allow me to run its inputs in to 1242 unit. However, I wet it when it was connected directly to Thunderbolt, but now it connected to 1248 and in Web App it only shows me 1248, nothing about 16A. I don't see any set up information in Manual.

Windows people can't use AVB for audio - you have to use USB or Thunderbolt (depending on the interface). AVB is just for interfaces talking to each other, and for Macs (audio).

Thank you for your reply. As it says in the first post and in the last post, first interface is connected via Thunderbolt. The 2nd interface is connected to 1st via Cat6. And I don't see the instructions on settings in web app just yet.

Sorry if I wasn't answering the right question. I was just trying to say that you don't (in Windows) pass audio over AVB.
I only have one interface though, so can't help with how to connect them.

Ok, I got the sound on both units. I probably did not select all tiles correctly- it looks like they recommend to set Audio 1-2 to go to Main, Audio 3-4 to go to Monitors and separate I/O for each headphone Out. To do that, I would have to create busses in Sonar, right/ I just set it to run the same Audio 1-2 to Mains, Monitors and 2 headphones- any reason it should not be the same signal? I don't like that my Microphones (actually all Inputs) show as 1Left, 1 Right 1 Stereo instead of 1 Mono, 2 Mono. I am used to it for Stereo keyboard tracks, but for Microphones it makes no sense. I have 4 Mic inputs and it shows as 1L, 1R 1Stereo. So if I need to select Mono track to record voice, I would just select 1Left? And Pan it center or Pan it Left? One weird thing happened that almost added 30 minutes in to troubleshooting. I connected Roland JP8000 synth keyboard to test if I have sound going through MOTU, and I had no sound. I listen in Headphones direct from the keyboard- it plays arpeggiator on Hold- continuous but no sound to computer. I am checking all Motu and Sonar settings, getting frustrated... Apparently, this older Keyboard I was not using often has no main Output. What in the world could happen? I connected Motif same port, same cable and it was working, but this one- the Main outs are dead. How is it possible? Can the headphones thoing that turns Main off when headphones used stock some how? How do I fix it? A shop? Thank you.

this is the page you need to look at: http://motu.com/avb/index.html it contains all drivers, firmware plus update instructions ... scroll down and you will find videos on settings, routing, etc. mind you - the routing options especially with several MOTU devices can be intimidating and may take a bit to fully grasp ... so when not hearing anything from a certain synth, check if the signal indicator "LED" next to the respective input in the MOTU routing grid flash when you hit a key

You have to read firmware readme....It says for my motu to use the "USB port." for firmware update to work. Depending on your device...Read the readme files...it should say how to, for your proper instructions from them. And I would save the old firmware if possible, just in case you need to roll back to a different Pryor OS version. Some firmware is for newer OS versions...so it gets complicated, if it is not working with 10...and you roll back with new firmware installed...things may not work proper...when rolled back to 8.1 or 7 or such..... Just thinking out loud in that regard of reason for firmware to be flashed to a new one is for what reason....? OS version release of 10? also check bios version of mb...is it up to date to run with os ?

Hey there I got it working. The synth that had no sound is now has sound but very very low and it says, Memory Damage- batteries low". I understand the low batteries, but do not understand why it would sound so low on volume- the internal amp is not dependent on the batteries, is it? So I have to find a shop for it. One thing regarding the sound quality I don't like: Motu has almost endless headroom to bring volume up. It goes in to -Db and +dbs, but has to stay somewhere at -10db in order to sound ok- after that, the distortion begins. I don't get it. The distortion is so heavy- I could process a vocal with it and make it sound like Industrial track. With my monitors IK Multimedia iLoud Micro at volume set at 2 or 3, it was distorted to a point that I could not tell what is wrong with the song. It was MOTU amp, because the speakers were at only 2-3 volume. had to put MOTU level to -15Db to make it sound good, and then bring the monitors level up. I have enough loudness in these monitors, I was able to make it very loud, but MOTU output had to stay at -15Db. I have large Sony studio headphones and have the same issue- huge harmonic distortion when it passes like -5Db. So why is all the positive Dbs for? Don't have that issue with Presonus. My previous post contains 2 questions I can use the answer, everything else looks ok. Thank you.

Vladasyn, I don't have my Motu yet, but my current interface is similar. Regarding the inputs labeled 1L, 1R and 1Stereo; 1L or 1R are just mono sources. You can pan them anywhere. The 1Stereo input combines 1R and 1L into a stereo input and the individual sources will be panned automatically in the stereo track.

Ok, thank you all. Can the main Sonar output be routed to one of analog outputs as well as Monitors and mains? I don't understand the concept of Output 3-4. The tiles system is very confusing. I need one stream to go to headphones amp and 2 to 2 sets of monitors... I guess you have to see the panel to answer this question...

yes. you can activate several outputs in the MOTU routing grid for the same signal ... you need to try ... many things are possible, even routing input directly to output (digital patch bay) or route input to MOTU mixer and then to Sonar ...

I have hard time to set the routing. If I don't use MOTU Mixer, and connect "From Computer" out to Headphones in, it works great. But I have to set up Audio channel in Sonar to hear my keyboard. Like to hear Yamaha Motif, I need to have MIDI set as well as Audio in Sonar to Motif. I am used to just set a MIDI and hear Audio through Presonus. I had all my keyboards connected to Presonus and they would just have sound disregarding of Audio channels in Sonar. In fact- I could play my keyboards without Sonar even opened. Now if I create mixer in Motu, I have to select "Analog Post FX" to headphones to hear instrument going through the Mixer. When I set it that way, then the Song does not play. It only allows one connection to headphones, so I can have either "From Computer" or |Analog Post FX". Not both. What am I doing wrong? I can not route computer through the Mixer because there is no options to set up outputs. The Mixer Out Group 1-2 can be routed "To Computer" inputs but I don't understand how it would help me. The Analog Inputs of Mixer are not routed to Group 1-2 in Mixer so nothing is making any sense. What in the world, MOTU? I don't have time for this! Please, let me know what you connected to what. Thank you.

Sounds like the monitor speakers are expecting a "line level" signal (-10dB or 0dB) and the MOTU is +4dB at the output.

The MOTU patchbay concept can be confusing at first... but spend some time working with it. It's extremely flexible... You essentially have a digital console (sans knobs/faders).

That's totally the case... and time spent to learn this is time well invested FWIW I have my routing so that I can play any of my several hardware synths with Sonar off i.e. all are routed into the MOTU mixer. Likewise for the DAW master bus which also routes there ... so no need to change anything with and without Sonar. MOTU mixer main routes then to main monitors and headphones.

I appreciate your replies. Jim, what you mean by "monitor speakers are expecting a "line level" signal (-10dB or 0dB) and the MOTU is +4dB at the output."- what post/ question you addressing? I been waiting couple of days, hoping to get some help. It is disappointing that some of you here already know how to set it up but you would not share. I get it- explaining it is time consuming. I set it up. I can not get it to go through the mixer to headphones. I get it either Computer to headphones OR mixer to headphones. My Presonus is set to run From Computer signal to FireWire card and to channel 24-25, and each hardware synth has its own channel. With Motu- there must be a way to make it go from Computer to Mixer first, then from Mixer to headphones or main out. So if you know how- please, tell me. I am spending time with it. I don't know how much time is reasonable to spend- I am looking at it and I don't get how to connect it. So I am going to keep looking at it with "Duh" look, unless somebody helps me. I cant call Motu because I am at work when they are open and when I am away from it I cant explain them what I have connected where. So I keep spending hour after hour looking at it. I don't know. It won't do it. help!

I got things playing through the mixer. But now I have Triple signal from the Motif synth. One is from Motif on Sonar audio track when muted, two when unmuted, three from "From Computer,". If I have it Audio 3-4 to go to Audio of Motu, then I still have it coming from Computer and also through Echo of Sonar- how do I separate it? And now I set Mixer Main to Headphones, Monitors and Main at the same time and I think I get what I need- I have computer audio playing and I have Motif Instrument playing. I can record it. But I have to keep Analog 3-4 in mixed Muted and I disabled Echo on Sonar track, but this does not feel right.
