How to use RXP Rex Player

I can't find instructions anywhere on using the RXP Rex Player. Can anyone point me to directions or offer their own?

Thanks

This was an advertised new feature of SONAR 5. Isn't there any discussion of it anywhere?

I am also about to pull hair out trying to figure out how to use this thing...

I read the help text- which was useless.

I am afraid that it may not do what I need it to do...

I want to build a drum track.

I have the rest of a composition written, and am looking for a tool to allow me to pick drum sounds and arrange them into beats to fit the music. I purchased Sonar, in part because I cannot tap out drum rythyms on the keyboard to save my life. At this point all the RXP player seems to allow me to do is pick someone else's beat and play with the tone, or move sections from one end of the loop to the other.

Hoping for help on the following:

    1. Can you copy / paste selections from within the loop? (i.e. if you wanted to build in an additional kick drum hit) I can't believe that the software won't allow one to edit the placement of the various drum hits...

    2. When the loop exports to midi it seems to be useless to any other device and plays an upward seq string of 1/8 notes, with no consistancy between a sound and a note. Am I nuts? Or is the MIDI output really just filling the space in the measure for the RXP vs. usable as MIDI?

    3. Should I be using a different tool within SONAR to build a drum track?

    4. If I use my keyboard to control other Dxi's there is a delay between the key stroke and the note being played through SONAR making this not usable... Any methods to solve the delay?

    4. Should I beg for my money back and buy a different software program?

    Appreciate any help.

    Brad

Hey Spif, look at session drummer in your manual. Insert on a midi track and assign RXP as the output of the session drummer midi track. It'll do just what you want. Happy New Year!

Just about to leave for a New Years Eve party but I thought I'd try to write a little "Getting Started with RXP" tutorial. Feel free to add or correct info.

How to Load a REX file in RXP

Insert the RXP using the Synth Rack.

Click on the folder icon above the Filter "Attack" knob.

    Select "Load"

Browse to C>Program Files>Cakewalk>Shared DXi>RXP>Contents>Smart Loops>Dry Studio Kit and select the "Bangin 04.rx2 Rex file.

    Click on "Loop".

Clicking on the "0" button will play the REX file to pitch at the project tempo.

Negative pads will play the REX file at a lower pitch with -12 being an octave lower.

Postitive pads will play the REX file at a higher pitch.

Click on "Slice" and you can trigger individual slices of the REX file.

There are also REX files in some of the "Loopmasters" folder. Check them out. As with any plugin, turn knobs, click on buttons, experiment. This stuff is supposed to be fun. Have fun and Happy New Year!

So- Session Drummer doesn't seem to be included with SONAR 4 Home Studio XL? It is not one of the available MIDI FX options... Is this plug in available for DL / purchase?

Thanks for the getting started guide. I did eventually find that a brief RXP demonstration is included on the little demo video Cakewalk sent out a while back, and I was able to figure a few things out from there. Haven't had a chance to try the session drummer though. I'll give it a shot as soon as I get a chance. I'm one of those people trying to stretch myself between too many kinds of projects! I'm not sure Session Drummer comes with Sonar Home Studio XL (it seems like it would), but you may need to fire up your installation disc and make sure all of the native plug-ins were installed by default. Don't re-install Sonar - just make sure only the box to install the plug-ins is checked.

First, make sure you aren't just checking the Audio track efx bins for SD - it's a midi plug-in so it has to put on a midi track.

You should have tons of drum loops that came with HSXL. Throw 'em on an audio track and loop 'em, stretch 'em, add fills, do whatever it takes to take it where you want to go.

You can also check out :

for slicing/dicing/creating your own REX loops for the RXP.
