How well does X1 play with a VS-100

I'm an X1 user and have been quite happy using that with my Edirol UA-25..

I'm now looking at getting something that will give me more I/O and something that would allow me to record (stereo is fine) at live gigs without having to mess around with laptops etc.  The VS-100 would seem ideal, however I'm not sure quite how well it plays with X1 ...

Does anyone have any comments as to how well the VS-100 works with X1 and if there are any compatibility issues as a result of the changes in X1..

I know there were changes for the ACT panel for the VS-700 and some gripes around how that doesn't integrate quite as well as it used to, but I haven't really heard of any discussions on the VS-100 front..

If anyone has both X1 and a VS-100 I would be interested in hearing your experiences.... I can pick up a VS-100 for £300 at the moment, so its a relative bargain...

The Octa-Capture runs  really well with X1 and I believe it uses the same converters and drivers. You can use a VS-100 along with the Octa-Capture for more inputs or you can run two Octa-Captures together forr 16 XLR inputs each with independent 48v phantom power. I think you will be happy with the VS-100 or the Octa. With the VS you get the fader and with the Octa you get more inputs.

Bottom line, yes it works wel with X1, it is designed to work with Sonar.

    Hey all,

I've had plenty of experience with the VS-100, both with 8.5 and with X1, and I can say that it works no different in X1 than it did in 8.5.

The transport, fader, control buttons (mute, solo, etc.), and ACT buttons all work just as flawlessly as they did in 8.5.

What you heard about the VS-700C and X1 had more to do with the fixed labels on the ACT knobs not matching the layout of the ProChannel's EQ knobs. However, I don't think this is really a problem as you can re-learn those knobs (on the VS-100, also) to control the PC controls in any order that you want.

Working with the ProChannel is pretty simple with the VS-100, too. Basically, just mouse click on one of the three modules and it will be controlled by the VS-100's four ACT knobs. And you can put the VS-100 into Full DAW Mode, too, where the mixer knobs switch from controlling the audio inputs to becoming additional ACT knobs, which is really cool. And it works this way with any plugin and synth, just how it did in 8.5.

Of course, you will get the benefit of getting newer, higher quality converters and mic pres than you've had with the UA25EX, which was certainly a solid and good device (I've used one for years, myself).

Perhaps the biggest change, though, will be that you will be using Roland's new VS Streaming driver, which is exclusive to the V-Studio and Capture series of audio interfaces. It can go down to 48 samples latency (I use 64 samples/ 1.5ms latency on my system) and is generally much smoother and more solid overall, especially at low latency, than the older drivers, which the UA-25EX used.

Having said all that, I certainly invite other users to chime in with their experiences with the VS-100 and X1.

How is the latency performance and is the VS-100 good for controlling tracks and volume, start stop play etc., AS WELL AS controlling plugin parameters?

    Lance,

The latency is excellent and is the same as the VS-700, Octa-Capture, and Quad-Capture, since they all share the same VS Streaming driver. The driver can go down to 48 samples in ASIO mode, which equates to 1.1 ms input latency at 44.1khz. I run my system at 64 samples (1.5ms latency), though, and it runs incredibly smooth with no glitching or pops even at that small buffer size.

For controlling volume and as a transport, the VS-100 is actually really great. The fader is the same as the VS-700C, except that the chip inside only has to control one fader so its actually a lot smoother than the VS-700C, which is pretty good itself. It is also very quiet, especially when compared to some of the other single fader controllers on the market.

The transport is great, too. They are soft touch buttons that you can actually feel, so its pretty easy to use the transport without having to look at it.

Personally, I think the VS-100 really shines when its paired with a MIDI controller. I like to have my MIDI controller directly in front of me with the VS-100 on the left and my mouse on the right. That way I can use my left hand for transport and fader control and my right hand for mousing with immediate access to the MIDI controller.

    nice-

I think i will be getting it soon enough-

Good control over sonar and plugins and great low latency performance, plus works as a portable studio-

    Im feelin it-

I have the VS 100 and Sonar X1, it can go down to 48 samples yes, but I don't think Seth quoted total RTL.

    At 48 samples I get...
ASIO reported latencies (including buffers and hardware latencies) I get 7.6msec RTL

but at 48 samples I get pops and clicks which is more a function of my computer then it is anything else which is a laptop with a desktop i7 950 in it.

I usually have it set at 96 samples and get a total RTL of 12msec. And have plenty of stability

EDIT: And yes it is a great control surface and a great portable recorder too! (Haven't used it as a digital mixer yet) but as an audio interface/control surface/portable recorder I think it's second to none!

My RTL at 64 sample buffer is 9.4ms (415 samples). I'm running an i7 over here and I am sure that plays a part in being able to run smoothly at 64 samples where perhaps an older Core 2 Quad system might need to be set higher (I don't know, haven't tested).

Thanks for the info guys... this all seems good...  will be looking at the user guides a bit more to validate it does what I want.. but am leaning towards getting out my credit card!
