Hows the world treating you?

I hope its treating you well.
Anyhow here is a little (Chet Atkins) cover song I recorded tonight.
As simple as I could make it.
Vocals and both Acoustic Guitars recorded with a Shure KSM27 Mic.
Same Reverb and Slap back echo settings.

Enjoy a sad song.
Please comment.

    thanks ward s.
I see you play a G&L bass. Id love one of those, but a fretted one for me.
I have a Precision style Frankenstein Bass, which is in bits at present. Putting a new neck on it and adding a Jazz Bass Bridge pickup.

It's a pretty sweet bass. I got it for fifty bucks from a disbanded punk band in DC. (a punk band with a fretless bass? well, whatever.) It's still in a box from my last move.

I can hear a real connection to the lyrics in your singing, which should be a singer's goal, so nice job on that emotional connection! Particularly your vibrato!

From a mixing standpoint, are you heavily compressing the vocals? They get a little "grainy" in spots, is it maybe that artifacts are being induced? Overall I thought the vocals came across as a touch too loud as well, so you might push 'em back down a bit, and maybe bring the drums up?

And I think Chet would like it, too!

    cheers,
    -Tom

    Thanks Tom,
The vocals have Focusrite Midnight Compressor on it at 2:1 ratio.
I do seem to get weird artifact sounds across my recordings. Not sure why. Must be Sonar or my PC.
(Never got it when I used to record onto tape, just muddiness when track bouncing though, they were the days).

I dunno, that compression setting seems pretty light in the ratio, are you driving anything too hot into it? I usually EQ before compression, and my EQ (DMG Equilibrium) has a nifty gain slider so I can give it more or less signal on the way out to the compressor. Are you sending the Midnight too hot of a signal?

just guessing. I still liked your song!

    cheers,
    -Tom

I will check it out, it could well be the case.
I'm the first to admit that im not very good at mixing.
I will repost the new mix when I can.
    Cheers Tom
