Hype: the documentary
Just watched this 1994 documentary about the grunge scene in Seattle, and how it morphed from a genuine grassroots anti-genre into a global commercial crapfest.
I was here in Seattle during that time, but totally missed the grunge thing because it happened during a period in my life when I was totally consumed by my day job and out of touch with musical developments, even those happening in my own neighborhood. I didn't hear Pearl Jam until they appeared on Saturday Night Live, by which time they had already become a huge commercial success. I remember being underwhelmed by their performance.
I do remember the whole thing being satirized on a local comedy show called Almost Live, in a skit where desperate record company scouts are rousing winos in alleys asking them if they were in a band. This documentary explained the joke to me.
I recommend "Hype" to all live-performing musicians, not just fans of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, et al, but everyone who struggles with the balance between creativity/fun and selling your music for money.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
