Hyperthreading Yes or No

I know there were some threads on this somewhere. So should I use or not use hyperthreading?

Sonar 3.1.1 going to 6 in a few weeks.

Excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is hyperthreading?

Advantages/Disadvantages of turning it on or off?

    Thanks guys....

Lifeson22, I'm no computer geneous but it's basicaly a way of making the computer thinking it is dual core when it isnt. When it is enable if you look at the task manager you will see two graphs of cpu usage, not just one. This is because the cpu has been dort of split up into two processors so it can work faster and do more. Its most effective for people using many programs at once.

As of whether is should be on or off... With my old computer i used to have many glitches so i turned it off and suddenly they all went and sonar worked so much better (i used to get blue screen o death quite often). But my new computer works fine and i only get blue screen once in a while which i think is related to my tascam us-122 but seeing as it doesnt happen too often im not too bothered. I know its not a good thing but i really dont care as its not common. I run hyperthreading on it.

Bottom line, if your computer has glitches often such as regular blue screens, turn it off and see if it helps, if not, leave it on.

Bottom line, try it and if you don't have any problems, leave it on.

OK, so let's say on or off is fine, no stability problems. WILL IF IMPROVE PERFORMANCE OR DEGRADE IT??? I think that this is the question. In my experience, it degrades it slightly. Also, if you use Reason in Rewire mode it will degrade it SIGNIFICANTLY as Reason can only use one core while Sonar can use multiples.

I had to turn it off on my system because it made my CPU meter bounce. It might depend on the system because some folks don't have that problem. It might even depend on your sound card driver. It's worth a try to leave it on the worst that can happen is it crashes Sonar and you have to delete the aud.ini file, shut down, run the BIOS setup and turn it off, then boot up again and restart Sonar.

My computer meter bounces as well. Maybe this is the cause of it? How do I turn off hyperthreading?

    Same happend to me.
When I turn it on I have Heavy Cpu peaks. For example
    Pentium 4 3.8 1 gig ram;

15 tracks with waves, sonitus and wave arts plug ins; When it was turn off I had a constant 23-22% of Cpu usage.
When I turn it on I had 17-38% going back and forth without dropouts.

I think that this feature is odd for Daw, basically because if you have a slave computer running Fx-teleport when you have it turn on
the virtual processor and the real processor are corrupting the execution of the programs because they split tasks.

You have to get in to the BIOS setup. On most computers it's a key you press while it's booting like F2 or Del, I think Dell is F2.
