I Go On

Hey There,

New song I wrote a couple of months ago - VC-64, T:L-64, and PerfectSpace on the Master, with a bit of Voxengo on the vox.  No lead guitar or keys on this one as of yet - tell me what you think - thanks.

-Doug

I would tame that snare a little and maybe EQ a little (not much) of the brightness out of it, I would bring harmony in on the chorus (I go on, I see the sun/son) Maybe it will be there 2nd time, I hear the double. I definitely hear a pad or keys on the chorus, maybe a harmony 2nd time through. Definitely a lead instrument at 3:27 which could be playing some fills up to there and then take that break. Harmony builds on the last chorus, with the lead playing along :-)

But these are mostly production suggestions :-) And "everybody" is a producer... I like the song.

a little different for you! yes, the snare/cymbals are far too loud, bright and splashy which is distracting from the rest of the music to me. i agree with Robby the chorus definitely needs something else, whether a pad or an organ or some distorted guitar. this could make a really cool shoegaze style track to me a la Lush/Slowdive - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol787NjpBS4 for example

    Hi Doug,

I like this baby a lot.   Has a nice airy feel and that's because of the space you left.  If you do fill it in i'd keep it sparse and attractive instead of just filling it up.
Some eq issues with the drums but you'll nail that after a few more listens.

But I typically say go big or go home :-( I hear pretty much everything as a major production? (you should hear me in the bathroom in the morning... I'M GIVINER ALL SHE'S GOT CAPTAIN!)

    Hi Doug,

I really like this tune- kind of a jazzy/ 'turn down day'(Cyrkle)/David Crosby(late Byrds period) sort of feel.

I think the spare arrangement works well.  I wouldn't add more than one more part- maybe a light, contrapuntal warm electric lead.

    Cheers,

    Hi, Doug,

How's it going, buddy?  Doing great, I hope!

This is a really cool song with a smooth, unique vibe.  Great songwriting, nice playing and excellent vocals. I also have to agree with Robby and Mark about the drums.  I'm generally a fan of "big drums", but maybe just try pulling them down a couple dBs so they don't quite stick out so much, distracting from your fantastic vocals.

    Dynamite song, Doug!

notnat - I like the song it's decent.

rockingrobby - thanks, I'll give the snare another listen - I doubled the vox on the chorus, but I didn't add a harmony.

mgh - thanks for listening - I'll give the snares and cymbals another listen.  I didn't add anything on the chorus - not sure what to do there yet.

    Thanks again,
    Doug

I think you may have crossed into another sub-genre....Jazz rock? I think I'm hearing some 9ths and minors. I really like the consruct though! Good layout.

I will tell you what I would do if it were me but you ain't me so take this with a grain of salt. I would take the tempo up a few notches. Not fast but a few ticks above where you are now.

I was going to say that the drums sounded "splatty" to me but if you were in a bar with a real drummer this is probably what it would sound like. I like the spacial quality to the drums but I think I would EQ them slightly. In this song I see the drums as more a participant in the main song and not an underpinning to the song. For a 4 minute song though I would change the rhythm up here and there to make it more interesting.

You have a great song here!

I like it.... and I usually like huge drums, but for this genre, I'm thinking a smaller dryer sounding kit just might be what is needed.... kinda like a cheap sounding kit with a funky sounding snare.... and maybe just a tad less busy on the drums.

Doug - Vocals are great!  Nice song.  The guitars and bass are recorded and eq'd pretty well.  The drums is where a lot of work is needed.  The cymbals and especially the snare is way too hot.  The toms are pretty good.  Can you describe how you recorded the the drums?  It's like the whole kit is going though some heavy compression, the cymbals are interrupted by the snare.

I think there are timing issues between the bass-drums-rhythm guitar. The intro feels way too loose (almost off the rails).

I think it's a good song too. You've got the vocal chops for this genre!

Like to hear this with some added keys and guitar leads/hook down the road.

    Nice chord changes.

Nice tune Doug, and generally well done (the vocals in particular).  I found the cymbal work to be somewhat distracting, and I'd look to dial them back a bit.  For me, they had a tendency to pull my attention away from all that was good, and there was a lot of good stuff there.

Nice vibe! The snare is very distorted in my speakers and the cymbals were a little too much . Work the melody in the chorus a bit IMHO. I like your voice alot! Thanks!
