I Got a Thing For You Baby (now including The New Mix)
Thanks to all the advice I have received from the great people on this forum, I remixed this track. In revisiting the tune, I realized that I had never given it much more than a rough mix, of the type you take home at the end of a session just to see if all the parts are there and there are no bad mistakes. If this were 1956, and I were Gene Vincent (for example), it would have been on the radio in that form the next day. But we don't do that kind of thing in 2016 . My big hope now is that I have not sanded off the rough edges and spoiled the spontaneity that made it fun to begin with. Thanks again, everybody! **********************Original Post******************************* I was at a memorial gathering for an old friend when she caught my eye. Dressed in black -- black T-shirt, black leather pants, black stiletto boots. It took me an hour to get next to her, and then she told me she was my friend's ex-wife, divorced before I met him. Awkward. We had a sexting affair and I wrote this song for her. She never took me up on it. I recorded it some years ago with SONAR 8.5.3 as a way to teach myself the software, later mixed it with X3. Now I want to try for a better mix with Platinum, and I'm open to ideas. Thank you for listening (it won't take 3 minutes).

Hi Larry, I liked the rhythm of the song. It is excellent. That delayed guitar-ending surprised me... I wish I could give you some "huge" advices on mixing... I am in the learning process myself so...

The mix sounds quite narrow to me I would be tempted to push the piano slightly more to one side and the rhythm guitar to the other. Nice tune and some nice playing though thanks for sharing.

humanrock - Thank you! I'm still learning, too. Wookie - My hearing isn't right and I have a tendency to forget about pan settings. Sometimes I do a whole mix with everything up the middle. I'll take a look at this one. Thank you.

Hey Larry, what an infectious rhythm and feel this has -- love that pumping bass!! The mix is tight and just right and the slight delay & reverb you have on your voice is perfect. Very good stuff -- I enjoyed the listen!! Allan =-=-=

Lots of good stuff in this track! Vocals sit perfectly, and I agree the delay on the main vocal is spot on. Really well done track! Regards, Dan

eph221 - First time I've ever seen a comment on vocal temperament. I looked it up, and discovered that it's actually a thing. Thanks! Ed - Gonna have to check my placement. Thank you. Allan - Thanks. I'm always a little worried about the bass -- so many ways to get it wrong... Dan - Thank you, sir (gotta have my echo!).

Rock and Roll Baby! Love this song! This would be a blast to play live. I can picture Southside Johnny doing this. I agree with Wookie, maybe a little more separation, but the vocal delay is perfect. Really dig this. Yours in Music, Rip

Maybe you fixed something, but I didn't really find the mix narrow. I might push the vocals up a bit more - that slapback room delay or whatever is sweet. Wide, I would say. My concern is that the bass seems to drop completely out on a couple of spots. Try :32 for example . . . maybe 1:!7 . . .if this is a driving kind of song, I don't think you want to lose the energy at any point. Your song was a pleasure to listen to, and your time on it was well spent! Nice band name, too! except you should get a horn section to fill it out to have nine members. :) -Tom

I'm with Tom on this one - did you change something? The mix doesn't sound narrow as of today. Fun song, especially knowing the source. At first I though the delay on the vocal was a bit much, but as the song progressed it did seem to fit. About the only thing I might change is to give the bass a little more "meat"... the attack is great, but as mentioned above the average level seems to fluctuate in parts.

heh, fun tune!
right off the bat, i get this huey lewis vibe, they were able to get that uptempo beat just right where it wants to get your heart racing, but not quite enough to be uncomfortable! but the singing reminds me more of a cross between jimmy vaughan and dr. john excellent recording and performance. i like the delay on the vox... but if you want to experiment with it, why not automate the FX on the lead vocal track; bring it down when the words are quick and tight, and bring it up near the end of each phrase or line..... 'play' the effect.

Steve - Nope, nothing's changed, although I have started a new mix of this song using your advice and the advice of others here (bass and stereo spread), and I'm now hoping I don't ruin it by "fixing" it. Thanks! (PS: I thought I responded to your comment yesterday, but it disappeared.) batsbrew - Thank you so much for the nice words! I have never automated an effect in my life. It sounds like work, which is anathema to old-time rockers like me. Still, I said I was looking for ideas, so I'll give it a try.

larry, it's as easy as arming a track to record. throw an fx in the fx bin on the track... right click on the track in waveform view and add the fx send envelope... click away!

Old style rock 'n roll --- I love it. I'm a sucker for uptempo songs anyway. The vocals are well done and match the tempo perfectly. The mix sounds good and I don't notice that it is too narrow. Nice one!

Hi Larry, I finally managed to get around to listening to I Got A Thing For You Baby. I'm no expert, not in the slightest, when it comes to "proper" music. I spend all of my time producing electronic music and, more lately, ambient stuff, so I always feel a bit out of my depth when I listen to stuff like this. So, as a "listener" this sounds fine to me. As others have said, may be touch "narrow" but I don't think that this is a particularly bad thing for this genre and I'd say it was "radio ready." While I was typing this I also listened to your other two tracks. Everything sounds great. Not something I would normally listen to, day to day, but I can still recognise good music when I hear it. You don't give any info on your SoundCloud page. Are you a band or to you create everything yourself? cheers andy

Nice tune! It kind of took me back to the Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Rockpile late 70's early 80's period of R'n'R style.
