I Guess Everyone's Pretty Happy With X3e?
[Please note that I changed the subject line to correctly read X3e instead of X3d as I mistakenly posted] Interesting how quiet it's been on the forum relating to peoples' discomfort... and problems. Not to diminish the troubles that some are having as always, but overall there seems to be a serenity? I must admit that I too have been quiet, but hopeful as I await not only a new version, but more importantly (for me) are resolutions to what I consider rather important if not show stopping... I guess I am subconsciously succumbing to the posibility that I may have to wait until the next paid release... Or longer? I am doing my work, but constantly taunted by my issues with Zoom... Difficult enough to deal with the limitations the Bakers placed on Lane Zooming, but the bug regarding zoom via click drag in the presence of Folders or Hidden tracks, I spend far too much time re-adjusting my zoom.... Everyday... All day... The point of this thread? Have we all given up such hopes? I guess we are all relatively happy with X3d? I'm just wondering if others have found working with such factors to still be a hindrance or has it become "comfortable"? Thanks... Keni

I guess most of the issues with X3 have been brought to light, thrown about and generally, thoroughly discoursed. There's nothing to left to do but get on with music making and generally having a good time. But then I'm a glass half full kind of guy.

The zoom tool issue is severe for those who want to use it frequently (including me), and various minor issues and limitations related to take lanes, etc. are a little annoying, but when I check other daws none makes me want to switch to it because they are either more expensive or unprofessional-looking or missing features that are important for me.

For me it's simply a half glass... Neither empty nor full...
...and I seem to be in the same boat as Jlien X... Most of Sonar rocks! I always have loved the system... And even the new UI... I have found my peace with most issues... But I depend on fast access to constantly varying zoom needs. It worked great for me up until the Lanes feature was implemented... Now some problems are "as intended" limitations and others are bugs... And it severely hinders my work.
If these issues could be corrected/adjusted I would be back to a good workflow... This issue is even more important to me with the X UI ... as it's layout makes less visible data on screen than with the original interface, so I am always Zooming somewhere! ;-)
I truly hope that the Bakers realise the importance of this issue... For many of us...
As to the other DAW softwares? None of them come as close to my needs as does Sonar!

I prefer the Golden Goblet, with a tasty beverage in it..if it is half empty? who can tell from looking from the outside?... There is always more in the bottle, or more bottles to get, so more can be added in...or more grapes to squeeze..no breakage when cheering and clanging together of them goblets...or tossing around...Just gotta keep them safe. X3e Working Ok ?...ok enough for some...and some others have issues...and then there are the bugs able to reproduce, Alex is gathering up!....So a update should come from all that...Hopefully more perfect and moving forwards would be cakewalks best foot forward next...And for what is offered in Sonar x3e...I see it as one of the top DAWs for a reasonable amount of change.

It sounds like you might have experienced a version where these problems didn't exist? So is there something in x3e that makes it worth dealing with the problems? ... and if not why are you not using the earlier version that didn't have the problems?

My only real irritant at this time is that the bakers have not responded to a problem I am experiencing with Arturia VST3 plug ins, yes I have raised a support request, and the fact that I seem to be stuck between a :- "Its their problem not ours, no they are wrong it their problem not ours." Argument. Please can it just be fixed so I can make some music.

From my perception the buck stops with Arturia. It's them who should be chasing it up with Cakewalk regardless of who is at fault as it's their plugins that do not work. Going through them should be the main communication channel for the customer. Cheers...

Hi, Keni. Glad you are at least mostly in a better place with the software now. I know perhaps you don't want to hear another of my ever optimistic views that likely don't take your specific workflow into consideration but... I keep seeing you refer to Zoom issues which for the most part seems to be the major complaint at this point now that you've made a reasonable peace with Take Lanes. Could you describe how you are zooming and/or how you expect zoom to work? I am unsure whether this is a height or timeline zoom issue but I am assuming you are heavily using keybindings for zooming either way. If it's timeline zooming though, (and I briefly mentioned this in one of your previous threads but didn't go into detail because there were other problems bothering you more AFAICT) I really think adding the click/drag timeline zooming feature into your workflow. I know in many ways a keyboard oriented workflow is optimal (and I myself try to use as many shortcuts for general functions as possible) but to me just reaching up to the time ruler and dragging up/down to zoom and left/right to navigate (at the same time no less) was a MAJOR boon to how I work. It is a million times easier and was one of the big selling points for X2 for me. I have never experienced any kind of bugs or quirks with it either even when I was pulling my hair out over other problems in X2. Awesome feature and only requires that you break one workflow habit (which admittedly can be difficult but in this case is a huge time save). If however this is a vertical zoom issue I would like to explore it myself. I have been having an issue with jumping screens so perhaps that is the problem. If so I have some possible insights that might help you at least anticipate the behavior so you can avoid them or mitigate them. If it is the same issue I also posted a thread about them recently that drew the attention of at least one baker who confirmed it as did other users. I don't expect another patch for X3 at this point but X4 (or whatever they decide to name it) is right around the corner and honestly I think under the new management and the renewed enthusiasm we've seen from the Bakers it should be a good release. Hope you've been well. Cheers.

re 3rd party compatibility: Well, as much as Cake should be making the program as hospitable as possible for all the various plugin standards and possible aberrations AND take into account that they should be even MORE vigilant in this regard because they know that many of these companies may not be testing compatibility with Sonar because it doesn't hold as large a consumer base as other DAWs might the reverse is true as well... There are only a handful of commonly used DAWs and while Sonar may not be in the top 3 or 5 or whatever the numbers are (please don't take that as me knowing anything about market share stuff because I don't but Sonar is not the most used DAW despite how cool it is and no one can deny that) it IS still used by MANY people and the companies writing plugins and doodads should be testing their wares with Sonar much more than Cakewalk should be testing their DAW with every known plugin on the market. Basically how many DAWs are out there that are commonly used? 10? How many third party plugin manufacturers are there? 1000's? More? Doesn't it make more sense for those 1000 companies to take the time to test their products with the top 10 DAWs than it does for the top ten DAW manufacturers to test every plugin on the market? This is (IMO) one of the few benefits of shelling out for PT but in a half arsed, lazy way. They don't allow you to just use whatever you want. You pay a premium for the DAW and then another premium for Avid approved plugs because they've been tested and confirmed compatible... and even then you may run into problems. So yeah... Cake should be more on top of compatibility and flexibility in regards to third party stuff because they KNOW that these other companies aren't really gonna go out of their way to test their product with Sonar because they are playing the odds that most of their customers don't use it... BUT those third party vendors are being lazy by doing so. I think this is why we have seen Cake just say "F*ck it!" and load the program with almost any kind of tool one might need in hopes of avoiding the whole nonsense altogether and I don't blame them. What will hopefully happen now that the Gibson name is slathered across the program and the X series has matured Sonar will end up taking a larger portion of the market and those third parties will realize that yes... they do indeed need to start including Sonar in their tests. But that's just my interpretation of the issue and... well I'm relatively new to all this so whatever. I'm just happy all my stuff is working at this point.

Beep, I think this problem stems from me loading Win 8.1 over top of Vista 64. This pc is still smooth and fast despite that fact. When I first installed X3 months back, the installation stalled. After getting a tip on this forum, I downloaded the latest c++ redistributable from Microsoft and X3 loaded fine. Like I said, X2 runs great on this machine along with soundforge11, reaper4 and well, everything else. X3e on my machine is usable, but sluggish with only a few audio tracks. Once it starts getting sluggish, the graphics on the mixing console also hang and jump. A temp solution has been to narrow the tracks in console view and not show the meters; then it works pretty well. But I like to see my meters when I mix. :) Given that X3 has such a good reputation, and my machine is in great shape hardware-wise; I think the logical solution is to wipe the drive clean of the Vista bits and start with a fresh Win 8.1 install...

Oh, yeah. That sounds like a plan. Gawd I hate Vista. lol You're really gonna like X3 once you get it running properly. It's like X2 graduated university, took some martial arts classes and learned the art of lovemaking from a Kama Sutra master. Still won't make me a damned sammich though. I've filed a problem report about that though so fingers crossed.

musicroom Beep, I think this problem stems from me loading Win 8.1 over top of Vista 64. Have you tried a different graphics card? Many seemingly impossible to track down "bugs" have been cured this way

Nothing like a clean install. Updates never do the job fully you just got to see the errors on the windows event viewer afterwards. Don't forget to run windows update several times inc optional updates before you install any applications (straight after windows install). Cheers.
