I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmonds

Any one know how to emulate the vocal effect used by Dave Edmonds on I hear you knocking?

Any EQ that has a "Telephone" effect will get you close. Otherwise chop the highs and the lows to a fairly narrow range around 2.5khz or so. Maybe add a touch of "tube" disto. I don't recall if there's also a 50's style slap back delay as well.

Another trick is to set up the "telephone" mix then use a reverb with a very short tail and no pre-delay set very wet so most of what's heard is the reverb. Plus compression,

Sounds like there was some double-tracking going on in that particular mix as well, though that could be the reverb.

I always think of  the range as between 500 and 1500 hz. RE Dave Edmunds track; slap echo and compressed distortion/overdrive ought to take care of the rest.

Shame really that Dave is best "known" for this "novelty" piece (don't get me wrong, I love it!).
Check out his cover of "the Stumble" on the Blues Helping album.
    'MAZING!

    Yeh, definitely amazing,
He's quite the accomplished musician,  bluesman (sometimes recording/playing all instruments) , perhaps never getting the recognition he's deserved, at least publicly, but well respected and worked with most of the greats in some capacity, recently on tour at about 70 + years old, I like the somewhat new song/video "Again". I'm thinking of lot of the vocal sound is actually the tone of his voice itself.

My fave Dave Edmunds has been Sweet Little Lisa (Does)with Albert Lee's first run through of the tune as his solo.
The video of the Stumble is a reminder of DE's wide skill set. This video is DE talking about Albert Lee decades ago and lots of fun, regarding this overdub session. I love that DE had the foresight to film this session and it's interesting to see who else wanted to watch it!

It seems Dave Edmunds thoughts about the song are appropriate here, too. In 40 seconds he explains what happened after the session.

As a nice aside to the DE Stumble video, there's one of a guy playing the Mick Taylor version of Freddie King's The Stumble, and it is very nicely done.

I think his first hit over here was 'Sabre Dance' (with Love Sculpture) After 'I Hear You Knocking' he went a bit quiet then had a lot of hits..'Girls Talk', 'I Knew The Bride', 'Queen of Hearts', and my favourite 'Crawling From The Wreckage'. Great player and producer, very underrated.

James     My circle of friends (back then) loved him, Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwartz, etc et al, and Heads Hands and Feet, so, we knew what he/they were up to (more or less LOL) over here on the "left side of the pond". When Albert Lee showed up on Jackson Browne's first LP, I was really surprised and delighted, then his hooking up with Emmylou Harris was "logical" and great.

It all seems a long time ago, however....LOL

    Nice songs, by the way!
