I Need Some Help With Audio Editing Within A Clip

Hello all,
I'm still using Sonar 8.5 (no bashing please) because I'm running it on a mid-level laptop, it's still very suitable for my needs and I know it like the back of my hand.
Anyway, I want to know if I'm crazy or Sonar just doesn't have this feature.
I've used Adobe Audition 3.0 for years doing voice over editing at a radio station but I use Cakewalk Sonar for my music at home.
The one thing that Adobe has that Sonar doesn't (or I've never found it) is the SUPER EASY way to edit audio levels within a clip.
**In Adobe Audition you simply hi-lite the section of the wave within the clip (no matter how long or short the clip) and a level slider pops up and you simply use the slider up and down to increase or decrease the volume level of the selected piece watching the wave increase and decrease as you move the level slider. (similar to the way it works in V-Vocal)
**In Sonar you have to add a gain envelope within the clip, add nodes around the desired wave and then experiment with the level because you can't see the wave being affected.  You have to play back over and over until you find the right level that matches the rest of the clip. I realize I could do this in v-vocal but sometimes v-vocal adds too many "digital sounding characters" to the clip...not to mention you have to convert to a v-vocal clip every time you want to do it.
This is just some detailed editing I do for the vocals before adding a compressor and was hoping Sonar offered the same capability, maybe I just didn't know about it.
Thanks, Sean

Sean, when mixing, I normally listen to a track (and monitor loudness with iZotope Insigth) and adjust the fader and/or channel gain to bring the level to the desired level. I then look at the numbers on the fader or gain adjust, select the clip I want to adjust and then use the Process/Apply Effect/Gain setting to either increase/decrease the level to match the numbers. When done, I set the fader/gain knob back to 0. This assumes the clip is fairly constant in level with the desired dynamics.

Sonar does not have an audio editor.
I added Audition 5.1 to Sonar as a third party audio editor.
If you search for Adding Third Party Audio Editing Software To Sonar's Utilities,
it will give you instruction so you can use Audition from within Sonar.
After you make your changes, you save and close Audition and you will be
returned to Sonar, and the changes will be made within Sonar.
You need to be comfortable with editing the Windows registry to do this.

At least in X3 and onwards, you can quickly edit gain envelopes by selecting part of the clip and dragging up or down (assuming you're already in clip gain mode). You don't have to manually create nodes. I THINK this is also the case for 8.5 but I can't test as I don't have it.

The way audition does it is similar to ProTools and I also would like to have non-destructive wave editing showing how the wave is affected. It's not possible right now. As an alternative, you could use the process/gain dialog, but you'd kind of have to guess. In X3 and onwards you can edit dynamics with Melodyne which is similar to V-Vocal but has far fewer strange artifacts. I'm not a hundred percent sure if you need to upgrade from the basic Melodyne Essentials that's included though. I know for sure Studio and Editor have it.

From memory, I think this functionality for adding nodes only started from X1 onwards. 8.5 & prior you had to manually add nodes, but you could select a range, right click the envelope and choose "add nodes at selection"
