"I Need To Know" Cover Song: <1 hour production

I play in a small group called Jan & Ted locally here around Paso Robles.  Last year we played at the California State Fair on one of their stages and had a great time and good turn out.  We just completed a four song demo to see if we can get some other hard rock gigs around the area.   This whole song took one take to lay down lead vocal, guitar and drums.  Another one take for bass, then one for lead and then backgrounds.  I played on Roland pads and triggered SD3.  Ted used his Les Paul and we used GR4.  Jan sang in my SH55.  I bet we have less than 20 minutes tracking time and 30 minutes for the mix.

We are happy with the demo.  Tell me what you think.

Thanks much.

Nice job Rimshot. That song brings back memories... Good ones at that.. Paso Robles used to be my stomping grounds back in the mid 80's. I was stationed at Vandenberg for 3 years.. My wife and I saw Huey Lewis and the news at the fair in Paso Robles in like 1985 or 86...

Right on liv4ree!  I grew up mostly in Santa Barbara.  Got my hair "trimmed" at VAFB every month.  My dad was a retired Lt. Colonel.  Thanks for the listen.

Nice job. My immediate thought was she sounds like Grace Slick a bit... clean sounding voice over the crunchy guitars.

Thanks Guitarhacker.  Jan, the vocalist, has never recorded before.  She has been playing acoustic gigs at the local wineries and her husband Ted plays guitar.  He is an old Ted Nugent fan from the East Coast.  We are really having fun and besides our acoustic stuff (I play acoustic and sing with them as a trio), we want to push the rock band thing for bigger venues.

    Good start Jimmy.

She needs just a tad more energy for the lead vox.

    Everything else sounds good.

If you ever need a bass player for a gig up there, lemme know.

Bapu - that would be totaly awesome to have you play with us!  Thanks for the offer.  I will keep you posted.  Jan will keep improving and she really did a great job for her first session.  It was funny because we all three had headphones on while I am hittin' the pads, Ted is playing direct, and Jan singing.  When I solo her up, I here the drum pads being hit.  I didn't try to isolate much at all.

    Thanks for your listen.

Good song.  It left me wanting more, and that's a good thing.  I'm impressed with the fact you triggered SD3 from pads.  The mix is well balanced, and the performances are tight.  Way to go.

Much thanks Lynn.  The pads like SD3.  The hihat pedal goes beserk at times but I can fix that later pretty quickly.

Really good and well layed out for 45 minutes worth of 'work'!! Most every band I've ever played in had a lead, female vocalist, so this brought back some memories. I liked this very much.

It's excellent for the time involved, has an Airplane vibe, that girl must be going for that. I can't really hear the mix on the notebook, but it feels like it's lacking some intensity. I can't really put my finger on it beyond that.

Great Job!!!love that song by Tom Petty, I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl, great show. One critique, I would have made the tempo faster. Other then that great mix and great performance

I used to play with Ted Nugent in the mid 60s in Illinois.  Therefore you are also a Warren fan.  LOL.  Just kidding.  Hey, I'd hire you guys.  Jan should be doing a lot of singing!  This demo should get some work for you all.  I can't even get my computer to come on in 60 minutes!

Jimmy - this is great - I'd love to see you guys live - maybe I'll have the chance one day. We stay in Morrow Bay a couple of times a year. My brother in law has a mobile home in the mobile home park right in front of Morrow Rock. Keep us posted - maybe we'll have a chance to check you guys out sometime this summer.

Ihansen - Appreciate your comments.  I worked in female vocal groups most of my career.  Jan and Ted are great to work with.

Bandontherun19 - Thanks for the comments.  I like the mix but the bass is not punchy enough and it needs about 2-3 db of 10K.  It really is only guitar, bass, drums, vocals, with overdubbed lead.  Simple.  I thought the drums punched pretty well. I put the saturation knob on the kick which seemed to work well.

Mtgonzalez - You may be right about the tempo but we layed it down on first take and liked it so we moved on.  We did 3 other songs in that hour.

Warren - Thank you.  I will tell Ted about your playing with Ted Nugent.  I will let you know if we get the gig.

Timidi - appreciate your comments.  We have a wine bar gig a week from Saturday playing downtown Paso 9-1 A.M.  I haven't done one of those gigs in a long time.  I have worship team the next morning.  It will be fun playing but then the tear down.  The room is in the basement of a building too.  Yikes!  I need a roadie.
