I Need You (Beatles Cover)

I just finished this up thought I'd post it.  Right on the edge of my vocal range so some spots are little iffy, but overall I hope it sounds okay.  Would as always appreciate any comments, tips for the mix etc.,

    Dan!
Long time no see! I like the nostalgic vibe in this song. Great vox! The organ sounds a little pushed out there or abrupt, if you know what I mean.

This is my favorite Beatles song. I can still here John going in to Girl after this (on the Love Songs double album.)

The only thing I noticed, is the shaker seems a little loud. It's panned far right and I can hear it very clear and I'm losing the high end in my right ear. I do 90% of mixing in mono because of it.

Great job on the bass, it's the hardest part to play on this song imo.

    Great cover!

    Thanks!

That's actually a 12 string electric (well my JTV 59's impression of one) using a swell pedal in Amp 3 I know what you mean I've had that up & down in the mix a hundred times trying to get it just right and it does seem a bit out there now. I'm going to lower it a bit in the next mix. Thanks much for the kind words on the vox and glad you enjoyed the song.

I've been a way for a bit trying to get this and  one other song finished and learning my way around Sonar X1, lot's of songs to catch up on!

tmidi:  Thanks much for the nice comments Tim, I'm gonna lower that guitar a bit.

Bub:  Thanks Bub, this is one of my favorites as well!  I've lost some some of my high end hearing as well, so I almost always get either the hi-hat, cymbals, and or shakers a bit too loud.   I'll back the shaker down a bit.  Thanks for the kudo's on the bass it took me a few tries.

    Dan,

Nice job, like the classic vibe.  One of my favorite Beatles songs too.   Nice BVox and drums/percussion too.  Like it.

Dan, I was 10 years old when the Beatles came to the United States. They made a huge impact on my life and are by far my most favorite band.

So, I hate it when someone tries to imitate them and murders one of their tunes. Man, you sure didn't do that - this is wonderful - you kill on this tune. This was well recorded and your vocals are really great.

Thanks for sharing - loved this.

This is cool :-) I'm not a fan of that synthy sound with the long attack? That's echoing the vox? Maybe a 12 string there would be better? If that's a guitar, it's something to do with the gate that's bothering me and it may be a been to prominent in the mix too?

I know I went on about that one thing? But other than that, the backup vocals, the bass, the lead vox, the overall vibe, really really good.

If that's the real sound that the Beatles used on the song, then maybe just knock it back a couple of DB and put some more verb on it?

    But hey, everybody's a producer.

Well, I loved this.  Saw the Beatles twice in Chicago.  "Saw them" are the operative words.  You couldn't hear a thing!  Dan, you did a fine job on this great tune.  You've inspired me to repost a Beatles tune I did with "Spacey" a year or so ago.  Thanks!  When you first started singing I thought it was the Beatles.  Well done!

You really did a wonderful job on this number.  Ya, this is probably my favourite Beatle number.  I really liked George's early numbers (e.g. Don't Bother Me, Tax Man, etc.) better than the other lads --- even though they seemed to get most of the attention.

You really did a terrifc job on all aspects of this number. Nice one!!!

    BIABDude: Thanks for the listening!

rockinrobby: I'm going to post a new mix tomorrow that tones down the 12 string electric.  It's close to what the original sounded like but it is a bit too loud and I think your suggestion of a bit more reverb might sound good as well.  Thanks for listening and the nice comments!

evadianepug:  I wish I had gone to see them when I had the chance.  Thanks for listening & commenting, I'll be looking forward to hearing your Beatle tune.

Freddy J:  Thank you for the listening and the kind words I appreciate it!  George wrote alot of really good songs, and this one is one of my favorites as well.

Hi, Nice Job! I would suggest maybe mellowing out the guitar tone on the volume pedal guitar. It sounds very trebly and if you were to pull the top end back it may sit better in the mix. A lot of the secret to the early Beatles sound is nothing was very close miced. The mics were close enough to capture the amp but there is a little room ambience in all those early tracks. You may want to keep that in mind for that retro sound. BTW, if you pick up a book called "The Beatles Recording Sessions" it is a wealth of info about studio techniques. It was written by the engineer for the band from day 1 when they auditioned to the split up. Daily track sheets and documentation of everything they recorded and how.

Thanks Robby, I'd love to do "She's Leaving Home" but I'm afraid my vocal range just wouldn't do it justice these days, luckily for me they indeed do have ton's of great songs and I can still hit most of the notes on many of them.   I really need to do an original but so far nothing's struck me and I need the practice. LOL

Thanks Philz I appreciate your taking the time to listen and comment, glad you enjoyed it!  I'm doing a couple final tweaks and I'll bring the drums up a bit.

    Thanks marcos I appreciate it!

Great job – the 12 string sound is right on the money – you even nailed the few odd notes (7th or 9th notes that Harrison used) – you captured the vibe and kept it true to the original. I love knowing that people are keeping this music alive. I saw the Beatles at Carnegie Hall in NYC (1964) – I was a changed person (for the better). Super stuff.

    Great Voice, Great Beatles feel...

    however...

the chorus guitar synth like that replys to your words... is too loud and also is off the pocket

sound like when you play a keyboard and you are firing a VST synth with lots of latency...

one thing is to nudge that track back in the time line to align it in the pocket... or just plain retrack that part..
it just sound off timed that i had a hard time to listen all of the song

the snare and kick are buried in the mix , and if you go for a beatles sound that is not the snare sound
of choice... in either case i will like a fresher aproach to it that would be another snare sound more current the the todays trend in song producing and making, but thats me..
your current snare sound , sound like a top miked snare drum... and i am missing the crackle of the bottom mike with the metallic resonance of the snare wires ...

    Nice vocals
    i like it
    Rolo.

I appreciate the kind words MannyNY, thank you for listening & commenting.

    Thanks Serious Noize it's appreciated!

Thanks rolo95, I agree I still need to bring the guitar down a bit more, I'll check the timing out as well.  The drums I'm pretty happy with, they are low key in the original and when they are brought up more it just doesn't work in the song IMO.  I tried alot of different kick/snare sounds and settled on these.  Thanks for the kind words on the vocals and for the listen!
