I Only Have Eyes For You - 33-1/3 LP Version.

I always liked the funky chord structure of this song and greatly enjoyed playing it, so I decided to record it. It was originally from a movie in 1934 and was later covered a lot, most notably by The Flamingo's 1959.

I used izotope's vinyl emulator plus two actual vinyl noise clips at the beginning and end to give it that real vinyl feel.

This was an absolute nightmare to mix. :) As always comments good and bad are welcome.

Project Specs:

Sonar X1b Build 255 x86
96kHz\32bits
30 Tracks
iZotope Vinyl (Vinyl surface noise generator) and actual vinyl noise clips.
Guitar Rig 4 Pro
Sonitus Reverb, EQ, Comp, Delay
Channel Tools
Boost 11
Dimension Pro - Strings
Dimension Pro - Hammond
Session Drummer 3 Acoustic Brush Kit
Fender San Miguel Acoustic
Fender Strat
Fender Precision Bass
V-vocal on 5 tiny sections. Sorry. It's a very hard song to sing. Hey, at least I'm honest about it. ;)
Mic: Peavey Celebrity Series
Vocal: Take 1 and 2 layered and snippets of takes 30 and 35.
Started 4/2011 Completed 8/2011

    Yeah, I like the treatment.

The simple funkiness of it has a great vibe.

Very nice, Bub.  I'd have brought the organ in later and kept it back further or maybe an octave down in the verses, but that could just be taste.  Otherwise the rack had a nice feel.

Kudos on the vocals, man, that is NOT an easy song to sing.

Hey Mike, Bill, Phil, thanks for listening. Hope you enjoyed it. I tried to capture that old vinyl feel so this isn't intended to be digitally clean if you know what I mean. Funny the thread came up in the CH about vinyl just as I was planning on posting this. :)

I started this project months ago just before I got my new mic and preamp. :( Tried to redo the vocals but it just wasn't happening. I'm not happy with the tonal quality of the vox, but there's nothing I can do 'bout it now.

Phil, I struggled with that blankity blankin' organ for days. I tried an octave down and it didn't sound right at all, I wanted to tweak the speaker rotation but that sample won't allow you to, and I couldn't find another sample that I liked. :(

Thanks on the vocals. I'm finishing up a Roy Orbison song now as well and will post soon. I'm a little scared about that one. :)

Compared to the original 96kHz/32bit file, this MP3 is a little harsh sounding. I may try to dither the master down and make another MP3.

Gotta shut down and go pick up the wife at the airport now ...

    Thanks for listening!

    Bub :)

    Bub,
Your comment about the vocals makes me want to suggest that you might someday take this song down a couple steps. You have a naturally musical voice with a nice tone but I think you were up near the top of your comfortable range (although I imagine you have another voice for higher registers) and seemed to not be at total ease. When you get to the lower notes in that song the tone of your voice shines and sounds sweet.

I hate being less than a yes man in these situations... but I'm thinking you're the kind of guy that will put an honest comment to good use. :-)

    all the best,
    mike

    Hey Bub

Man, I really enjoyed this! A really tough song to sing but you did a fine job with it.

Nice instrument treatment, really liked the organ, I've been looking for a good Hammond sound, I'll hafta try D Pro.

Again man, great job, thanks for sharing it!!

    @Karyn: Thanks. :)

@Mike: You are 100% right. I ended up using takes 1 and 2 because it really went down hill from there and I stopped at take 55. Seriously, 55 takes. I tried lowering the key, but then the lows sounded too low if you know what I mean. I fell my voice gets boomy when I go too low. Now I'm really scared to release the Roy Orbison song I did. :)

@Janet: Thanks. What do you mean "takes you back"? You're only 29 aren't you? :)

@rscain: Thanks. The Dim Pro patch I used was 09-Organs/Hammond Soul (fast).

@Scottytunes: Thanks! I struggled with the low end on the bass. I traded it off for a more defined low-mid. I'll go back and tweak it some. The bass is a lot of fun to play on this. Sometimes I mute it and just play along to practice.

There's a couple of things I'm going to tweak on it based on feedback.

    Thanks!

Hey Bub, this was really good! Really dug the production too! My only crit...the quality still sounded too good to be on vinyl. LOL!

Your voice is really strong when you stay in your comfort zone. The timbre has that "pro" sound to it. Like the pro singers of years ago. That's an awesome quality to have.

I used to play this song in a wedding band I was in as a drummer when I was 12. I know "what were you doin in a wedding band at 12 Danny?" LOL! My dad bought an organ and with it came 3 free lessons. The lady that came to teach me saw my drum set, asked me to play and then said "we have a wedding band...and our drummer will be away for a while, wanna fill in for him?" so I played with them for nearly 2 years. This song was my rest time. I remember looking at all the couples slow dancing wondering what my wedding would be like. 32 years later and I gave up wondering. LOL!! Anyway...really liked your verison of this. Lots of cool stuff happening the more ya listen to it.

Hey man, don't worry about the takes thing. Anytime you think you're out of control, you just remember lil ole me beating you by 200 takes! I'd kill for 55 takes of anything! But I'm so darned stubborn, I may do a 5 second section like 100 times. LOL! So just click on this when you feel you've done too many takes....and just laugh and thank God you're not this "pathetic". http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4909348/Pathetic.JPG

Hey, I really dug that rap tune you did too which I just listened to for the first time. LOL that was killer! Love the solo stuff there as well as the concept, the humor and the horror. :) Good stuff man, thanks for sharing.

hey bub - this is really cool!  lovely arrangement, mix is good - love the "retro" feel you've added in.

I agree with the comments about your vox, very good when you're in your comfort zone, you might want to transpose down a 1/2 step or two in the future.  but I also think you're over processing it like you might be trying to hide behind the processing.  It might be just what you're trying to accomplish with the "retro" feel, but to me it sounds more like you're masking your voice and it shouldn't be masked because it is really good behind that processing!  back off on the verb/chorusing on your vox, IMO, and it will sound much better!

    Bub,

Pretty cool.   Backing track is outstanding, Everything is performed well and sounds great.  I like the vinyl pops.

Vocals are good, the only thing I miss are the Oohs and Ahhs that were popular in the 50's and even in the 30's (the backup singers).   I have used some of the Pop Choirs in Omnisphere or use Melodyne or Waves Ultrapitch to make some background singers appear on the chorus.   Adds a little dimension and that dreamy quality of the vocal groups of that era.   That said, fine as it stands.

    Regards

Hey Bub, this was really good! Really dug the production too! My only crit...the quality still sounded too good to be on vinyl. LOL!
I really had the Tube Sat cranked up and at the last second decided to take it out. It really sounded authentic with some distortion on it.
Your voice is really strong when you stay in your comfort zone. The timbre has that "pro" sound to it. Like the pro singers of years ago. That's an awesome quality to have.
Thanks! I've really been trying to push my vocals lately because I'm starting to lose my voice and I have it in my head if I push it a little, maybe I'll get it back some. Not that I ever felt I had one that was all that great, but I could get by if you know what I mean. I don't sing regularly anymore so when I do, I got a good couple hours in me then it's over for another 2 weeks.
I used to play this song in a wedding band I was in as a drummer when I was 12. I know "what were you doin in a wedding band at 12 Danny?" LOL! This song was my rest time.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. You started playing out 2 years before me. I started at 14 playing Legion halls, weddings, bars ... etc. Almost every weekend until I was 29. The only reason my parents let me was there were two cops in the band and they knew my family because my brother was a cop and he worked with them. So we all knew each other and my folks knew I was pretty safe.
I remember looking at all the couples slow dancing wondering what my wedding would be like. 32 years later and I gave up wondering. LOL!! Anyway...really liked your verison of this. Lots of cool stuff happening the more ya listen to it.
I always used to wonder about that stuff too when I'd play at weddings. Then once we were around so long that we started playing divorce parties for some of the people we did the wedding for, I stopped wondering. :)
Hey man, don't worry about the takes thing. Anytime you think you're out of control, you just remember lil ole me beating you by 200 takes! I'd kill for 55 takes of anything! 255 takes is a LOT! :) I think the most I've done is around 100, but it was on guitar. I never get that many takes on vocals because my voice gives out. And I don't know if it's a mental block or what, but when I let a vocal sit a few days and then try to redo it, it never happens. I can never get as good a sound as the first run of takes.

Thanks for listening to that one too and glad you liked it. I'm amazed by the hits I've got on that. It's over 400 now.

@elix: Thanks! :) The guitar was run through an ART Pro MPA II Reference Series Tube Pre-Amp then in to Guitar Rig Pro 4. It turns GRP 4 in to a completely different sounding plug-in in my opinion. I'm sure any tube pre-amp would have the same effect on Guitar Rig.

@Beagle: Thanks! :) All the vocals have on them are some light reverb and a tinge of delay. But, they are double tracked with 2 takes and heavily EQ'd. The problem with the vocal track is, it was a bad recording. I didn't have my new mic and pre-amp yet at the time and it sounds like I'm singing in to a tin can if I don't process the living daylights out of it. It's cool that you picked up on the processing. Good ears. :) I have 7 instances of Sonitus EQ on it. I toyed with the background vocals a bit, but they ended up clashing with all the instruments. I'd have to redo almost the entire song to have it sound right. Which I may do. I'm working on an original on now I can't wait to put out. It has a very unique title that will catch a lot of attention and I'm really pumped about it.

@guitarhacker: Thanks. :) You can tell where my heart is when it comes to music. Oldies rock/pop (40's ~ 50's) and old country (40's ~ 60's). I've always felt I was born 40 years too late.

    @Janet: :)

    @Alegra: Thanks. :)

    @Starise: Thanks. :)

I don't sing regularly anymore so when I do, I got a good couple hours in me then it's over for another 2 weeks.
I used to play this song in a wedding band I was in as a drummer when I was 12. I know "what were you doin in a wedding band at 12 Danny?" LOL! My dad bought an organ and with it came 3 free lessons. The lady that came to teach me saw my drum set, asked me to play and then said "we have a wedding band...and our drummer will be away for a while, wanna fill in for him?" so I played with them for nearly 2 years. This song was my rest time.
But I'm so darned stubborn, I may do a 5 second section like 100 times. LOL! So just click on this when you feel you've done too many takes....and just laugh and thank God you're not this "pathetic". http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4909348/Pathetic.JPG
Hey, I really dug that rap tune you did too which I just listened to for the first time. LOL that was killer! Love the solo stuff there as well as the concept, the humor and the horror. :) Good stuff man, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening to that one too and glad you liked it. I'm amazed by the hits I've got on that. It's over 400 now.

Ah I'm glad you didn't use the Tube Sat thing to be honest. I love the sound of clean audio...even with the vinyl sim, this was nice and clean yet still authentic.

On the voice thing, I'm in the same boat. We've just lost our endurance from not doing it as often. I probably sing a bit more than you do, so it's a bit easier for me to get it back. But the first few takes of a song for me are usually pretty rough and if I'm not careful, I can blow my voice out in 3 passes. Sometimes we push too hard too and that can take a toll especially if you're not singing often. I only sing on my original stuff when I play live or when I'm recording. Most of the time these days though, I've been singing lots of back ups for my VH tribute band...which of course as you know, is way different than when you're belting out lead vocals.

How's your breathing and delivery, Bub? I don't know how much you may or may not know about vocal techniques, but try this next time when you sing...see if it helps you any. It's done wonders for me...especially in the "over-breathing" area. When we take in massive amounts of air, we can flood those vocal folds really quick. Remember those little toys called the "Hum-a-Zoo?" Ever have one and blow into it too hard and it makes a squeak sound? That's pretty much what we do when we take in too much air when we sing, and push it out to sing hard and loud. So to stop that, I had this vocal coach teach me this little trick that really did wonders for me for controlling my air intake as well as the push after.

Make your abs hard like you would if someone was gonna hit ya in the belly. Then, take a little more than your average breath of life and try to sing while keeping your abd hard like that. I know "what abs?!" I don't have them either anymore. LOL!! Oh wait, I can see two....if I don't eat for a day, I can see 4, but I've not seen 6 in15 years. Hahahahah! Anyway...oh yeah, make sure you move your bowels before applying this technique because if can get messy. LOL! Seriously though, it's really made a world of difference for me because it stops that massive air from coming in as well as being forced out. You'll actually sing higher with more control once you get it down. What it's basically supposed to do is control your air. Once you get that control down, you won't have to use the "hard abs" trick anymore because it will just happen naturally. Give it a shot sometime. The less you push with more control, the more endurance you'll have as well as more consistent pitch. I dig the sound of your voice though...seriously.

Oh wow, so you were playing out pretty young too eh? That's great. I loved that little wedding band. I learned so much from them that actually helped me later on in life. Especially with stage volume. LOL @ divorce parties! I literally LOL'd at that!

Yeah, I'm a pathetic lunatic with punch ins. But the good thng is, they happen so fast I can probably do at least 30 or so within a minute. My left hand is in a permanent ctrl/x position and most of the time, those takes are in a 10 second spot. I just like to hear a certain delivery...ya know? Chances are if I played 20 takes back, you'd look at me and say "dude, there's no difference". I just look for dumb little things that I try to get as perfect as possible....and sometimes it takes me a few hundred takes to get them right. LOL! But they happen so fast I don't even realize it until I look at the take amount...then I cringe. Did you ever try singing in sections? Sentence at a time? That works pretty well for me and stops me from blowing out my voice.

No problem, I really enjoyed listening to your stuff. It was well done and deserves the hits. You're a good guitar player with some cool licks considering you favor the older stuff. Not that the older stuff is bad or anything, but you play electric guitar in a more "current" style which I think is killer. Kinda like Bapu and Philz....they prefer the classic rock stuff but have opened themselves up to the newer stuff as well and can play anything really. I really dug some of those riffs and leads in the rap tune that you did. Keep up the good work man. :)

You covered my favourite version (by the Flamingos) of one of my favourite ballads and you did one doggone good job.  Excellent playing, vocals, and I enjoyed the crackles and pops of the vinyl treatment.
    Nice Job!!

Liked it a lot. Tiy shoulda left the Tap Sat on it, sounds too clean. I bet with the right setting on a Fairchild 670 vst this would sound awesome.

    Bub - really really nice.

Like your voice a lot - I hear a hint of Michael Stipe in there - which is no bad thing.

Rik, Freddy, James, Quarry ... thanks for the kind words.

Glad I got this finished when I did, X1C has brought my system to it's knees and I'm dead in the water for the time being.

    Hey, Bub,

Nice job on this authentic, vintage sounding classic!

Really great work on the vocals and guitar, and I loved the organ sound that you used.  I know it was supposed to be a Hammond, but it sure reminded me of my old Farfisa organ through a Leslie, from when I was in junior high school.

    Really good stuff, buddy!
