I Shall be Released demo

I like to play this song for practice. I was using a small recorder two days ago and stumbled on a new melody line to try on the song. Yesterday I took the scratch track from the recorder and dragged it in to SONAR and made a quick demo.

I'm still working on the mix... but think I simply need to start again with playing better timed guitar tracks and I'm not really sure what to do with the bass... I'm thinking a smoother tone might be better. I did have a very simple march type drum track to play too but muted it for the mix as it seemed more vibey with out the drums.

I'm struggling with too much bass on my big system and not enough on the cheapy speakers. I may play the bass again an octave up.

The lower mid range seems a bit cloudy... but I played and sang all the parts sitting at my DAW desk... so what can I expect?

I know I don't contribute comments frequently enough here at the songs forum... so I apologize for that.

I think I like this song so I thought I'd to post it to see what you all think about it.

I Shall Be Released demo recording

best regards,
mike

    hey, mike
I love the "feel" of this.  very "down to earth"

when the bass comes in around 0024-0031, there are some notes that are not sounding right to me against the guitar.  I don't think the bass is overpowering on my system.  I think the timing on the bass is off in places as well.
love the guitars they are well recorded.  mostly good vox, there are some places that your vox really shine.

    nice work!

Arron Nevil sends shivers up my spine when I hear his version....

Mike, you have a nice voice.  Guitar sounds good, bass is missing quite a few notes....

Not bad. You might consider getting serious on this tune..... it's that good.

    Thanks for listening everyone.

I agree about that bass... I'll start over... don't know why it was so hard the first time. I'm going to set up a smoother tone so there's no percussive growls.

The vocal was supposed to be the scratch track... it was the only take but I started liking it.

I was shopping to get the bass down before vocal... so I guess I rushed it and then got used to the sound... even though i knew better. ;-

I'll fix it up the bass in the next day or too.

I think I'd like to be a better guitar player too... but I've never been better than slightly sloppy. :-). I may take another stab at those parts.

    Thanks again!

    best regards,
    mike

Mike, it is easy to "fall in love" with a song you do yourself. First of all, that is a mistake. As that happens, one tends to overlook the mistakes and issues and begins to consider them as "character" in the song and performance.  Nothing is further from the truth. One should always listen with a critical ear.

I will very often play a song over and over in my mp3 player, listening carefully to every aspect of it. I'll make mental notes and even set down with a pad and make notes on things I hear that are wrong with it that need fixing. Sometimes it takes weeks to hear something that most other people would miss. Even the smallest things such as very small timing or pitch issues or an "almost mispicked note" .... as a guitarist, you understand that quote.  At times it's the overall EQ or just the EQ on a specific track that needs repair.....the goal is to weed them all out.

Sometimes I get lazy and let them ride, it mostly depends on what I plan to do with the song.  If it's going out to publishers and libraries.... it has to be as close to perfect as I can make it. The whole point is to constantly be improving your skill set.

Nice song - and your vocals are really good on it.  The guitar is just fine and is recorded well.  The bass tone is fine.  The only thing about the bass is that the bass line is wandering a bit introducing tension where I don't think you intended it.  try just sticking to the root and fifth of each chord per measure as opposed to passing tones.  It's going to be a good song when you're finished.

Thank you for the specific comments about the bass. I'll bet one of the examples are the measures Beagle mentioned.

I'm going to re do and simplify the bass part tomorrow as a start.

Hi Mike, you have a nice vocal performance going through most of it but it's out of tune in a just few spots, same with the bass, mostly decent even the timing is not to much of an issue for me but just could be tighter note wise bro.

    Yow!  The bass is awesme!

Like many songs of late, you've omitted the *percussives*, thus forcing sweet melancholy waters to cascade, ebb, flow, and/or "release".

Only "Crying out that he was brave" sounds scratchy, IMHO.  But this is a sketch where the subconcious must groan and cry before the untoward polish weakens the love.

To me: Song, Melody, and Performance are 10/10 ... (I love) on numerous levels:
Inspiration, Guitar, Ballad, Message, Theme, Melancholy, Re-pining love, balance, etc.  It will allow numerous re-listens and hummings.

Sounds natural and rootsy. The bass notes seem a little off to me in places.

    Thanks for listening everyone.

A special thanks to twisted for being frank about the vocals. Getting that feedback is important to me.

I am hoping that fixing up the bass will also help the vocals... if the bass is off key it creates confusion that extends further up the spectrum.

After I get the bass part redone I will scrutinize the vocals... and see what I can do better.

    best regards,
    mike

Good cover,  like your guitar playing on this.

    Dylan has some great lyrics.
