I Wanna Know (new mix & solo)

I rarely do covers but.... this is a cover tune.

It's an old Creedence Clearwater Revival song.... Have you ever seen the rain.

I used 3 synth tracks...drums bass & B3.

All other tracks are the new Telecaster and the Taylor.

I drew from a number of influences on this version. Hope you enjoy it.

Awesome Herb! I like this better than the original! Good mix man...and the voice...it sounded authentic at first in timbre....then took on your identity...which I liked better than the original as well. One little crit...lol...it's not a fault of yours though....so don't get mad at me. Hahaha! I think soundcloud may have sucked out some of your quality due to the mp3 encoding or something. You know that compression artifact thing it sometimes adds....that's what I mean. But that's not your fault...really loved this man...excellent job. Nice roomy drums...all the instruments worked fine for me. Great performances as well. Sometimes covers are pretty cool to do, aren't they? It's like...you can just enjoy playing without totally driving yourself nuts with the creative process of being original AND getting the mix right. With covers...you just do your thing and mix it. I know there's still a bit of creativity in a cover due to putting your spin on it...but you know what I mean...it's a bit less stressful than going from the ground up on an original. I really enjoyed your take here...great job! :)

Hey Herb,   I'm listening at work on computer speakers, but  to qualify what Danny said the vocal sound distorted to me for the first few lines then cleaned up...
Also, where Danny describes the drums as "roomy", my thought was that they were recorded seperately in an old, empty aircraft hanger. Especially the ride..

Other than that,  beautiful.   The guitar tone is lovely.

Funny, the other day I had thought of doing a cover of this song, but I had thought to do it all punked up.

Guess I'll have to wait a while before I do it.....

Scotty: Thanks.... CCR was one of the bands I held in high esteem as a younger guitar player....

The intro kinda reminds me of the song by the Youngbloods called Get Together... just a bit.

Never heard the original, so nothing to compare it to. Listening on headphones I would agree that the drums are maybe a little too roomy, even though DD is probably right and I would back the guitar off a little after "I wanna know"  lines - sounds like the guitarist turned himself up there - who'da thought a guitarist would ever do that ?  ;)

Other than that  sounds pretty much like I would imagine it should.

Sounds good to me, That extra percieved volume in the part Paul is reffereing to is that tele twang cutting through.  Ya might back it off a little but it's not even really bad where it is.  Nice job man!

Hi again,   Listened on cans to the soundclick version and I think I know what's gettin me about the ride.  It's the bell hit, too loud and harsh.  It's masking the snare, making it the dominant sound and for me it gets anoying by about halfway through.

As before, the guitars are beautiful.

    Hey Herb,
Nice job making this tune your own. I want a TELE so bad you just can't beat that classic twang. Did you add any effects or is that a clean tone coming from the pickups. Mix sound real good on my end. I was going to make a comment also about the room of the drums. But the more I listen I agree with Karyn. I don't think its the drums but  the ride cymbal. I would back off the room verb on the ride a smidge.  GREAT JOB!

Herb, nice arrangement!  I love the guitars, voice and especially what you did with the drums.  The snare "breathes" and the playing was great.  Love the tele.  I also want one bad.  Thinking about those Mexican made tele's for $400 early next year.  Hope they sound halfway decent.  Your's sounds great.

Paulo.... wow. do yourself a favor and get a few of the old Creedence Clearwater Revival CD's  These guys defined the music of the 70's. They were a California band but everyone thought they were from Lousiana due to the style of music they played.

Chuck & Karyn..... but I like it!  I used to play with a drummer who played the cymbals hard and loved the bell....

Kev: I've been wanting a Tele for so long because of that clean twang

Grant.... Yeah... thank you for listening!

BOTR: CCR had tunes in the set list of almost every band I have ever played in.  I loved that band.

Rimshot.... that is the new Modern Tele made in China.... has 3 PU's on it... a neck Tele, a strat middle and a humbucker on the bridge that you can split the coils.   cost new= $400.... yup, really nice.

Herb one of my favorite songs , years ago I played in a country band and we played this song  .
Our lead singer had the same voice as yours and nailed this song everytime we played it .

Nice job playing it and singing it , enjoyed your version of this tune .

I think I like it better than the original also. I love the original. It would be interesting to hear what John Fogerty sang like if someone had bought them a PA when they were first starting out.

    Very well done!

    Mark, Radio, & Pima.... thanks...

I heard that about J Fogerty. That helped him develop his unique voice. Singing w/o a PA.   I heard him on TV recently, and .....well, lets just say, he should retire from performing.

    Tim.... dang that ride bell.....!

Thing is... it's a BB drum track...so going back to "fix" one instrument (the ride bell) is not a practical or easy thing to do. Maybe by EQ, but then that affects the other things in that range as well. one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't scenarios.

Since I have been using BB for drums, this issue has come up more than once, so.. I am looking into ways to try to output the midi from BB and use it to play JS with multiple outputs..... that way I actually have some semblance of control over the various and sundry parts of the drum kit.

Yeah that rear humbucker is HOT.  It still has the bite, but when it's cranked it can really scream and cut through pretty well.

Of the 3 pu's on the axe, the HB is the louder one by far.   I can not remember if I used it on the solo's or not... I think I did. With the POD2 on the Pod Crunch model with the knobs set about 50% on everything.

This it the marker post for the new mix.

All I did was put some eq damping on the drums to try to calm the ride bell which seemed to upset Karyn.... don't want her mad.....  I hear that she trains snipers and plays a mean cowbell...... I dropped the higher freqs on the kit.

I also recorded a new, clean, more laid back solo. The dual twins, while it was cool, and fin to do, seemed to stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the mix. To me, it seemed to be out of character with the feel of the song.

Perhaps this one will work better. It has EQ to take the edges off, compression to fatten it a bit, multivoice chorus flanger set to a slight vibrato, and studio verb 2 dark plate in it... I think it fits better than the previous.  I hope you like it better.

Herb, back in the day when I used BIAB, I always exported the midi from BIAB into ProAudio and worked it from there. Lots of tweaking out a bunch of controller data IIR. Lots more control though. And, I never used their drums. This was before BIAB had audio though so I guess it's different. All those BIAB audio tracks (drums) are pre-mixed?

You did a great job on it. It's tough to take on such an iconic tune. I kind of agree on the drums being a little too far back. On a song like this, having them more up front would probably provide more drive and energy.

Tim: yeah ...BB outputs one track... I need to see about exporting the midi from it.

    Notnat: thanks buddy!

Tap: yeah I had to redo the solo this morning.... the old was bugging me.... a bit too busy and with the twin distorted leads it really didn't fit to well  Thanks

Droddey..... drums too far back?   aye carramba....!  others were saying something opposite in the ride bell...... glad you listened and liked it.
