"I Will Rise" [UPDATED 4-13 w/ strings by Janet!!!]

Hello friends! This is a song recorded with my friend Heath that also includes our daughters (Lauren & Abby - 15 & 14) on BGVs and our friend Keith on djembe. It seemed like an appropriate song to share this Easter season. We're pretty happy with how it turned out, but I'd definitely appreciate any feedback on areas you see for improvement.

For those not familiar, it's a cover of a Chris Tomlin song.

Thanks!

I wrote a song called I will rise? It was subtitled "just give me a few minutes, this has never happened to me before." This pretty, I would bring in a lot more vocals, and hit it with a big choral production. Backing Heath. Especially, "I hear the voice of many angels sing?" I would grow it all much bigger, and build it sooner, But I like **BIG** productions! :-) This is pretty though.

I love this and we've been singing it for a couple months now.  Keith's got a great voice.  It sounds recorded well to me.  The girls sound great too.  :)  I would like to hear it with bass and some strings over top, but there's nothing wrong with what you have here.  The percussion in the bridge is a nice touch.  Great job, Dave.  :)

A bit different than our church sings it (we're WAY more upbeat).  But I really like this version too.   Very well played and sung.

That said, I wouldn't have minded a bit more instrumentation drums especially, but then again I'm a beat man.   I could also see some low swelling strings really helping to fill it out.

But, even without all the bells and whistles it's really well done.

So Robby, you're saying you want it to get bigger quicker, huh? Heath was thinking about adding another vocal part to the bridge so your input helps.

Janet & Matthew - thank you! I think strings would be nice too, but I'm not good at doing much more than an orchestral pad. Matthew I've never heard an upbeat version of the song but I bet that would be really cool.

Thanks Herb I'm glad you liked it!

Tom - I appreciate you taking the time to listen! I love the message too.

If you'd like me to add a few strings parts, feel free to send it to me.  I'm between songs right now anyway.  But like I said, it's quite nice the way it is.  I just always 'hear' strings I guess. :)

Very nice voice!  So smooth and comforting.  Nicely recorded.  I would agree with others about building up with more instruments.  I would start on the second verse and reach a climax on the bridge.

I appreciate the comments, Vicente! I'm going to take Janet up on her offer to add some strings so stay tuned!

excellent sounding song, the acoustic and vocal balance is perfect. backing vox work superbly too. Tomlion writes some great song, and whilst i wouldn't class this in his top bracket, you do it more than justice here!

Hi Dave, very nice, really good vocals and I like the sparse instrumentation. Since this song is about the message in the lyrics I personally wouldn't ad to much to it. One stupid suggestion is that I would like the last chord on the guitar going up, as in rise, instead of going down as it is now. Good job all round .

    Greetings, Rik

Rik - not a stupid suggestion at all! I love little nuances like that. I probably won't retrack it for that purpose but I liked that idea.

Thanks Tom I really enjoyed the laid-back vibe as well.

Mark - I'm usually not a big Chris Tomlin fan. I think he's a great songwriter (although he has some "duds" like the best of them) but I've never cared for his vocals. They're a little too "adult contemporary" for me. I thought it was a good song for Heath's vocals and was happy with how they turned out.

You do great work, Dave.  I always like the tunes you do, original or covers.  The problem I have is getting your avatar out of my head after I start listening.  :-)  Must be special working with the girls.

Yeah, like every girlfriend I've ever had... I was listening? And it's good, don't get me wrong. We're all producers... All of us, everone who listens? regardless of if they comment that way or not? We are ALL producers.

There's a real charm and sincerity to the simple recording you guys did, to say nothing of the fact that it was just plain old really well done.  I'm jealous that you're raising your own BGV group there... my kids (all adults now) would never sing.

While I liked this JUST the way it was done, I (like Robby) kept waiting for it to go big: more acoustic guitars, bass, electric rhythm guitar, drums, and more voices... lots more.  I can't speak for Robby, but for me it may just be a matter of personal taste.

It was good listening for me as it stands though.

Beautiful number and performance.  Terrific vocal.  I agree with Phil --- I love the uncluttered nature more simple production of this song.  To me the song has a real sincerity done in this manner and you have a great voice and shouldn't hide it in a big production number.

I love it! This song is awesome. I love Chris Tomlin. Great job. Especially since the original was a piano-driven song.

Thank you all so much! Working on mixing in Janet's strings right now, but it is very tasteful and leaves it "uncluttered" as Freddy said. Hopefully will get an updated mix tomorrow.

octoberroad - I recorded the acoustic (a Taylor GS6) using two Rode NT1 mics with one around the 12th fret and the second somewhere between the soundhole and the bridge (both about 6-8 inches away). Recorded to separate tracks, panned about 50% left / right, added some EQ low shelving to bring down the lows, then added a touch of Perfect Space reverb.

I'll have to mess around with a similar setup and see what I can come up with. It is such a nice tone.
