I activated the MP3 Encoder...
I decided to get the MP3 Encoder activated in Sonar because it works so well for me. I have Audition so I could encode mp3's there but I don't want to. I like the idea of just staying within the Sonar program to generate mp3's. It's so simple to use once you've gone thru it. I'm planning on making lots of mp3's so this will be a time saver for me.

I have the Mp3 encoder activated as well, but I still end up using Soundforge. I'm so used to importing the wav and I can do Fades, etc abit faster there. It is an extra step exporting and importing to another program for sure. ; )

Having it makes the workflow simpler and easier. I can export as an MP3 and I'm done. I won't have to monkey around with any third party software. I like that.

I'm surprised not more people are using LAME in Sonar - it's free and I had the impression it was the standard?

Well the encoder that's imbedded into Sonar is a Lame based encoder, it even states that at the bottom of the encoder box. What you're paying for when you activate it is the ease of use. Just a couple of clicks and I have a very good quality mp3. It doesn't get much easier and that's what I want...simple work flow with quality results. Ya it costs $19 bucks, but it's going to a good cause...future developement at Cakewalk...plus once you buy it, you'll never have to buy it again, even if you upgrade to X2, X3, X4 etc....

djwayne - I haven't tried the MP3 Encoder yet. Seems like a no brainer to add that. I was wondering if any of the tools along the way to the final MP3 output allow you to put in the various classifications - like who it's composed by, the year, etc. Do you have anything like that as part of your MP3 output workflow?
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

I too have the encoder for convenience. Products like Sound Forge excel when you have many wavs to convert as there are batch processing functions not available in SONAR. I can process literally hundreds of wave files on the fly if necessary. Processes could include many others besides conversion to mp3.

Always felt odd that you have to pay additional $ for such a basic function that you can do in so many other programs, even some for free. Feel like it's a function that should come w/ the program w/o an additional charge.

Its a matter of licencing. Cakewalk gives you the option of paying. Programs that include an mp3 encoder have to note somewhere in their documentation that licence fees have been paid to various organizations for the use of codecs etc eg for mpeg 2 or 3 encoding. you pay that fee with every version whether you know it or not. Cakewalk's method allows you to opt in if you want but pay only once when you do as the decoder will work continuously as you upgrade through the years say to X2 X3 X4 and so on. I paid once and used it for many many years already. It's actually thoughtful on their part and saves the end user money in the long run.

I think all the questions have been answered by the other posters. I have MP3 burning capabilities in Audition but I don't want to use that program anymore for personal reasons.

Actually no question was asked in the original post. I provided information that wasn't fully covered in any other posts and was a direct answer to "bladetragic" who's post is above mine. I included the information as there often is a question about why the Cakewalk provided mp3 encoder is a pay for addon. When or if folks do a search on the sunject then this thread will now contain all the uptodate and correct info.
