I am new to cakewalk producer x3. I would appreciate if someone can help me.

I do not know how to position the timeline cursor. That is if I want to move the cursor 5 ticks to the right or left what do I do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. Turn off the snap to grid and place your mouse where you want it.

John, Thanks.  What I need to know is that how can I position the time line cursor precisely. Suppose my now time is 14:14 and I want to position the cursor on 14:17.  I cannot position the timeline cursor using the mouse.

The time line is your friend. This is where you see all the measure numbers. Its at the top of the clips pane.

You should be able to place your mouse anywhere on it. This will bring the Now Time line to that point.  Its a left click.

There is also Aim Assist. X will toggle it on and off.

Thank you so much. But still I cannot seem to move the cursor line.  I have an old cakewalk professional 8 program in which I can use the now time beat tick clock to position the cursor, but I do not see that feature in producer. What am I missing? I am really naive.  I just want the time line cursor to move where I want it to. That is all. Regards.

You might try expanding the view in your track which will make the wave form much bigger in track view.  You should be able to more easily zero in on your targeted spot that way.  The timeline changes scale as you zoom in.  As above, make sure that snap to grid is off.

The time line is sensitive to where you place your mouse. If you place it in the wrong place it wont do what you want it to do.  You need to be on the part with the numbers for the measure if that is the time type you have for display. (It can display other types.) This is very simple and shouldn't cause any trouble to do.

I think that the "G" Goto key only works in M:B:T.  If you want to move in SMPTE time, it's not going to help you, AFAIK.

To move in M:B:T, type "G" + "4.2.480" for example and it will take you to 4:02:480.

To change the Goto dialog to SMPTE, select the "Display All Times as SMPTE" in Preferences > Customization > Display

While recording vocals with pre-recorded tracks, how can I listen to my own voice.  I switched on the echo on the vocal track but delay was annoying. Any help and suggestions will be much appreciated.

My sound card has the ability to rout recording sound directly out before it hits the
recording software. Before that, I had to use a mixer before my sound card and monitor off of that.

What kind do sound card do you have?

Use the Audiobox headphones and adjust the balance between computer and input with your MIXER control.
If you turn on input echo you'll hear your voice after it has gone in and back out the other end with all the latency that resulted from conversion and processing. That's why we use direct monitoring at the interface.

That is what the track volume faders are for. You may also want to check out Automation in the Sonar manual.

I did not explain right.  What i am trying to find is that if I want to lower or raise a note by 3db or 6db how do i do it?  i the old cake walk that I used it had an option to raise or lower a note by 3db or 6db.  Thanks.

Actually, if you're using the vsl version, set the mix knob all the way to computer...

Open the vsl app and there you can adjust eack of the two inputs separately as well as the PC playback volume.

To here reverb while recording, use one of the fx sends in vsl to send to a reverb while leaving the recording path to include the direct from preamp and not include fx... This will give you essentially zero latency reverb while recording but note that you need to use reverb in sonar itself after recording as the vsl reverb was only for monitoring...

I would opt to use a volume envelope to adjust playback volume for portions of a mix...

Do you know about volume envelops?

keni, I am pretty naive.  I used to use cakewalk pro-8.  In the edit menu there was a drop down which allowed the selected audio to e raised or lowered by 3db as needed. Thanks for your help.

Its funny I had Profession 8 a long time ago.

In Sonar use automation for what you describe you want to do. Its precise and easy to use.

It's still there under Process|Audio in the menu...

If not use the above and select gain which has presets for such...
