I saw a percussionist by the name of Kaz Hussain performing with Aruba Red at John Henry’s Studios in London last year. He was basically covering both drumset and percussion parts by using a Meinl Cajon on his lap and a tambourine under his left foot.
He had his forearm across the cajon and he would smack the cajon with his forearm to create a bass drum pattern. Then he would use his hands and/or 1 drumstick to play percussion or emulate the snare (or both). The unconventional technique was quite impressive to watch.
