I built a new house (updated with new pics)
Well, kind of.... it all started with my mother in law buying a doll house kit. It is a christmas gift for my niece. It ended up in my closet and my wife "encouraged" me to put it together so they could buy some furniture for the house. So, I dragged it out, and thinking I would have it assembled in less than an hour, carried it to the dining room table for assembly, and opened the box. As soon as I saw the parts, unpainted parts, bags full of unpainted parts which looked like a model airplane..... I knew I was in trouble..... deep trouble. I browsed the assembly instructions.... all 30+ pages of detailed assembly instructions. Time for plan B. Set up some tables in the empty bedroom upstairs, unpack the box and read the manual. This project was going to be a real job. No screws, no nails, no snap together parts. Wood that needed at least 2 coats of paint and oh yeah.... don't paint where the glue goes.... yep that's right... glue that sucker together. And use tape as the vise to hold the parts while the glue sets. One bag contained close to 1000 postage stamp sized wood shingles for the roof.... they all had to be stained with an oil based stain. No latex or water based glue on the shingles since it would make them curl. I reckon I put 80+ hours into the house. I finally finished it last night and removed the final tape from the Boston Lap ridge shingles this morning. Some touch up paint yesterday and it's done. And no, this is not something I plan to do again...... but then again, my daughters might have girls and so I would have grand daughters and this is not out of the realm of possibility...... it was interesting.... and no, you don't always follow the instructions..... I had to redo something that was clearly indicated in the manual to do.... but was obviously wrong. Put poly on the floor they said...... took me an hour to scrape it all off because it was peeling.....and stain the floor again. Nothing was pre-assembled...... nothing. Wadda ya think? I think it turned out pretty nice. I think my niece is going to like it a lot.

I was reminded the other night by my wife that one of my projects for next year is to build a dolls house for our grand daughter. I was thinking about building it from scratch, but now I know there are kits out there, the whole thing seems a little less daunting

That looks great, Herb. You did a really nice job on it. Yes, that sort of thing can take some time. But it's worth it. I think she'll enjoy it. I build a lot of much smaller structures(1/87 scale) and can appreciate what went into that house. I think she will appreciate that you took the time to build it for her.

The studio is in Malibu. Ken is still trying to book some time for his Air Supply tribute band. Right now, the studio is completely booked by Skipper's Pantera tribute band. Ken and his crew have no choice but to spend their time at the mall. Hey, once you land that seasonal job in an elf costume, you don't throw that away. You also don't risk upsetting Skipper. No. No, you don't.

I'm pleased for you Ub, really I Am. But maybe next year you should try the Xmas season? Elves look a little 'out of place' most other times of year... YMMV

No, your honor, I'm not wearing a costume. No, I'm not mocking you or this court. I'm afraid I don't understand how curly-toed shoes are disruptive, sir. I admit that you were right about the jingly hat, though. Those bells can get annoying. No sir, I don't see a problem with the green tights. Well, of course they're a tad snug, your honor. They don't call 'em tights for nothing! No, sir, I did not mean any disrepect, sir. The ears, your honor? I'm afraid I can't do that, sir. Yes, sir, they are pointy. The tips are superglued on, your honor. Yes, on purpose. In hindsight, sir, that may not have been the best idea. The moobs are real, your honor. No, sir, this is more of a skin tight muumuu. Yes, it feels like a sausage casing, sir. Without it, I'd have to pay for an extra seat on the plane. Yes, your honor. I admit that last comment may have been in poor taste. I am grateful to receive fashion advice from a guy in a dress. Oh, hello, Mr. Baliff...

Thanks for the comments on this unique build. As I progressed through the process, I discovered that there is a whole world of things built and designed for these doll houses. Obviously, the furniture to outfit the rooms.... and I suspect that those are also available in kit form. Craig mentioned plumbing and electricity.... Don't know about the plumbing, but yes, they do make electrical lights and such for these houses. Wire is in the form of thin tape. LED lights and it all runs off batteries. They have wall paper specially designed for the smaller scale as well as an entire range of textured paints (simulate stucco) and floor coverings. Sorry, that's a bit too much for this builder. Latex paint left over from my own painting projects is what I used. The front door is actually the same paint and color as my own house's front door. The blue on the siding is some outrageous blue sample my wife picked up for a project which I simply added white latex paint into to calm it down closer to a Carolina blue as opposed to royal blue. If you are a real glutton for punishment, there is always the dreaded crown molding and baseboard molding that can also be applied to the rooms. Bristol_Jonesey: My mother in law picked this kit up at Hobby Lobby on sale for $50. The website for the company lists it for much more.....IIRC $199 as a kit and $299 assembled. The fact that the majority of it was factory precision cut made a huge difference. The roof, especially not only had angled cuts but some of them were also mitered at other than 90 degrees to fit together with no gaps where the roof angle changes and intersect. The only parts I had to custom cut were the roof edge trim. Easily done with a bare hand held hacksaw blade and / or a sharp razor box cutter. Shingles were cut with the box cutter. I spent about $10 on some Weldwood glue for the shingles and used some white glue my wife had for the rest of the assembly. I was surprised the white glue held so well. Blue painters tape as a vice to hold the parts until the glue set up...and only one thing I glued broke. I dropped the stairs and it popped apart at the glue joint. All that's left is to finish cleaning up the room, put the tables back where they came from and store the paint again.

Hobby Lobby is an American company..... but I'm sure someone over there makes and sells the pre-cut kits. I couldn't imagine having to cut that sucker out of the raw boards. With my skills, and level of patience, nothing would have fit right.
