I can't seem to convert midi to audio
Hi, I have set up the Sonar LE programme correctly and I can't seem to convert it, I went through all the instructions and it bounces the midi to audio that I have made but it doesn't come up on the next track....I am totally confused.

Would you mind giving a little details about what you're doing? What is producing the sound for the MIDI?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hmmm, I think we need more details. What exactly are you trying to do and what exactly are you doing? When you have your MIDI & synth tracks set up there's not much reason to bounce it to audio (uses less processor power but burns up more disk space).

Okay, here's the thing I have been trying to bounce a part of a verse to audio. The thing is the bar at the bottom that tells you how many of a percentage it has transfered to audio comes up. But it comes very quickly and then it disappears, so the track I set it to doesn't show up an audio track version of the midi track I had previously. I don't know what else to say.

Your Edirol is a soundcard, right? A soundcard can not turn MIDI into audio. As I asked: What is producing the sound for the MIDI? MIDI is only playing instructions, it has no sound. To convert MIDI to audio, there has to be a soft synth or a hardware synth that actually creates the sounds to be bounced.

Kalle was on the right track. It sounds like you're set up is directing the MIDI instructions back to the Yamaha and it's converting that to audio. If you want to get your Yamaha's exact sound then you'll have to 1) Run an audio line form the Yamaha to the PC 2) Create an audio track, set the input to the audio input, and arm it to record 3) Press 'R' to record; the MIDI will be sent to the Yamaha, which will play back and record onto the audio track OR, you could insert a Soft Synth (not sure what comes with LE but look under 'Insert' and redirect the MIDI toward that.

Great glad to hear it. Hats off to Kalle because he figured out the question behind the question. (BTW, Kalle, I like your signature about middle-aged amateurs. I resemble that remark. )

Keep your hats on your domes...we have a freezing winter up here :o) Nice to hear Musicman got things running. That signature expresses my effort to make my pessimism visible to myself, so to be able to laugh at it or cut it's wings...or at least tie its wings a bit... Starting my DAW hobby 20 years ago, my intention/hope was to give a proper form (decent sounds and arrangemets) to the songs I made in my youth. I wasn't able to do that with 4-track cassettes or multitrack-minidiscs because I can't play the real instruments well enough. The first 10 years were wasted on finding out that I couldn't afford the gear capable enough. Now the gear is affordable but I don't have the time. 70 % of the songs are still to be recorded. I'll have to start maturing myself to face the fact that the songs will never get done.

To convert MIDI to audio, there has to be a soft synth or a hardware synth that actually creates the sounds to be bounced. hi there, i only visited this forum once before, and spotted your comment today. my soundcard is a UX1 line6. i have nothing but the latter into which i plug a microphone, or a bass. i mainly use accoustic guitar. i tried every suggestion i found on the web trying to turn a combination of 1 drum track - a midi groove clip from Groove Monkey- and a couple of audio tracks - guitars- into an mp3 or wav file. all tracks were exported into audio except the drums. you say 'a sound card cannot turn MIDI into audio'. i know midi is not audio. my question is: what is the difference between a groove clip and a softsynth? if one can't record a groove clip, what the hell is the point of them? any help would be appreciated. cathy

Soft synth is a software instrument that plays the MIDI-commands in audible form. A groove clip is a recorded piece of material in SONAR. You record something, and when you then turn the clip into a groove clip it can adapt to the projects changed tempo and be copied by dragging. If it's a MIDI-groove clip, you need a soft synth to make audible. So soft synths and groove clips have absolutely nothing to do with eachother per se, but you can play MIDI-groove clips with soft synths. If I understand correctly you've been trying to export your project with the result that drums are missing?? Did you select all the tracks for export? I'm not sure if "groove clip" in Groove Monkeys site means the same thing as in SONAR-lingo. I don't know if it's a general expression or software dependent.

Right. You have to select both the MIDI tracks and their associated soft synth track before they can be converted to audio or exported. What software synthesizer or hardware synthesizer is making the drum noise when you hit Play? If it's the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, I suggest insertng a soft synth and sending the MIDI output from the drum track to that soft synth. Depending on which version of SONAR LE you have, that could be TTS-1, Edirol VSC, Session Drummer 1 or 2, or Studio Instruments Drums.
