I did it!
Cut back on coffee and limited myself to 2 cups in the morning for the last week or so. Usually, 3 bags of coffee would last me a week. Barely. I've been on the same one for over a week now... Obviously I did have to find a substitute. I've quickly become addicted to Earl Grey - I have to be careful with this one, I could drink gallons. I also enjoy 1 or 2 cups of green tea. And herbal tea later in the evening. Incidentally... Recently, I started waking up w/ a light headache every morning - which is weird because I very rarely suffer from headaches. I soon realized that this might be related to the allergy season here in the desert. So when we went to the grocery, out of curiosity, I grabbed this herbal tea called Sleepytime Sinus Soother. I am not one to put much faith in natural medicine and herbs and people who claim they can cure cancer w/ baking soda and lemon juice, but since I wanted a bunch of different teas, I bought a box of this one. Well, it might be pure coincidence but it's the second morning I wake up w/o a headache. Same for my wife. Or maybe the allergy season just happens to be through. At any rate, that stuff tastes great, with or without the medicinal benefits. Overall, I'd never thought that cutting back on coffee could make such a difference in the way I feel. My energy levels seems to be much more even throughout the day, and I just seem to feel better and more focused. Which is perfect if I'm to start studying those music theory books. :)

Depending on whether your teas are decaffeinated or has more than you were drinking with your coffee (many teas have MORE caffeine than coffee), it's also possible that that could be causing your light headaches too. Basically, this is brought on by some significant change in your caffeine intake (though usually caused by caffeine deprivation). They should go away as your body adjusts to the new levels. Just make sure you're also drinking plenty of water.

Good point, though until a few days ago, I had replaced coffee with green tea and herbal teas exclusively, so, if anything, my caffein intake was at its lowest in years. The deprivation would then have been a likely cause, but since both my wife and I have experienced similar symptoms and she's replaced coffee w/ green tea years ago, I'm inclined to believe that it was likely to be related to pollen. As for water... I practically drink one of these a day:

Another thing you'll notice by cutting back on coffee is that you'll retain more water (since coffee - and apple juice - are diuretics). A good rule of thumb on how much water to drink is half your body weight in ounces so almost a gallon a day for me! Not sure how you can do it, but just make sure your headaches are really pollen related. It's rare to get light headaches from those types of allergens. Usually light headaches tend to come from food allergies and reactions, or breathing something bad (like the chemicals in fresh paint, carpet glue or, worse, carbon monoxide). Changes in sleep patterns can cause them too (one of the main ways I get them), yet this really goes back to food processing as well since the body's natural pattern is being disrupted. Why do I know any of this? 'Cause I used to have nasty migraine-like headaches which turned out to be mostly food and sleep-habit related. I had to do a lot of research because, when I had one of the full-blown headaches, I was completely unable to do anything except be in pain for hours (and pain relievers did NOT work - neither did rest which, ironically, made the headaches worse).

Wow, thanks for all the info, Craig. :) One of the reasons I equated the light headache with the time of the season is that it seems related to sinuses - headache might not be totally accurate in this regard - my head felt heavy and congested, more of a discomfort than actual pain. I mean, it's a form of pain I guess, but, you know...

I love coffee. Today I bought a box of Twinnings Irish breakfast tea too. I'll tell ya, If I don't drink coffee in the morning I will have a huge headache, but I gave up smoking, drinking and drugs long ago so I feel I've quit enough!

Yep, that's the type of "headache" I'm referring to. Whenever I feel it start I've begun taking two migraine tablets (just the cheap Equate stuff). If I get it soon enough, I'm usually fine. If it's really outdoor allergy related I'll get other symptoms like sneezing and itchy eyes (HATE that!) and have to take an allergy medicine instead. Fortunately, I only get this during June for whatever reason. Just remember that it probably IS sinus related (pressure or constriction of the nasal airways - I get it mostly right above and between my eyes). That means it could be either a smell or food related (like a lactose intolerance or too much cheese - especially cheddar).

i don't drink coffee that strong. Usually a half to a third of what some places make it. You get use to it, and I use 3/4 decaf and 1/4 regular coffee. Haven't drank yet through my second 10 ounce glass yet today - 5 hours later. Of course it is lukewarm as usual.

craigb Get a mug warmer or a vacuum carafe SpaceAlf! I have both and they really allow me to enjoy my coffee without having to down it as it gets cold.
Might sound disgusting (my wife thought so) but I never mind my coffee getting cold - I used drink room temperature coffee all the time. But then, she never got that one of my favorite lunch is an orange w/ a glass of milk - I have that almost every night. In fact, pretty much everybody seems to think it's gross. To me, it's a match made in heaven. Go figure...

Headaches are common with any kind of withdrawal. I remember giving up smoking when I was 22, I had a constant headache for about 3 days. Well done on the coffee front though. Caffeine is no less a drug than anything else and yet its consumption is encouraged by society with reckless abandon. Like everything else, it's OK in moderation and I find that the less caffeine I consume, the more of an effect it has on me when I really need it. I once saw a documentary about a guy training for a North Pole expedition and he said that they all give up caffeine for a couple of months before setting off so that their morning cuppa in the tent gives them the kick they need to set off in sub-stupid temperatures again. I gave up coffee at the same time as giving up dairy, because most of my coffee was consumed outside (Starbucks, deli's etc) and I wouldn't touch soy milk with a bargepole and none of them offer almond or rice milk as an alternative. Black coffee is nasty....so I took up green tea as a replacement. I love it now. I carry tea bags around with me and very cheekily nip into Starbucks and ask them for a cup of hot water. They usually give it to me for free (what do they care?) Once you get into tea drinking though the possibilities are endless, way more than with coffee. I like to drink ginger or peppermint tea after a large meal (helps digestion) and I also have a cup of dandelion tea with honey in the evening. It's good for your kidneys apparently (or is it your liver? Meh!) My other non-coffee tipple is Natural Calm, a hot magnesium drink that comes in a couple of flavors. It really relaxes you physically and I've found it helps me sleep and also helps with the tension in my neck.

Actually the oil of bergamot which is the perfume used to make Earl Grey taste like a French Madame's boudoir could cause headaches also. I acquired a taste for Lapsang Souchong whilst trying to reduce my coffee intake due to the amount of milk and sugar I was also ingesting whilst downing my then favourite beverage. I can drink plenty of that, no milk, nor sugar without any ill effects and I never tire of it. I'd also disagree with Sharke on the point that headaches are common with any kind of withdrawal. I quit booze 24 years ago and it's been the most headache free 24 years of my life...

Cola is my biggest addiction w/ coffee, and my first one actually - I've drank that stuff every day since I was 12, but I was hooked way before that. In my late 30s, I took what I figured would be the first in a series of steps towards more healthy habits - I switched to diet cola. However, sweeteners like aspartame are apparently a pretty nasty thing, worst than sugar, and I was still drinking 4 or 5 cans of diet soda every day. So at that point, still unable (and unwilling) to completely renounce to cola, I took a decision - I went back to regular Pepsi, knowing that since I was on a very strict training schedule and an otherwise very healthy diet, I would be much more mindful of my intake. Notwithstanding the fact that it is plain unhealthy, at 150 calories per can, I'm much less tempted to down more than one of these. But how I appreciate that single can!

Funnily enough, I've done all of the stock hippie cliches: taken copious amounts of hallucinogens, played folk music, been vegan (still am except for eggs - I'm an eggan) and drank herbal tea etc, but I could never get along with hippies. I think it was the politics, the patchouli and the lack of hygiene that put me off.

I guess I'm lucky in that I could never stand soda, especially anything made with high fructose corn syrup. I can't stand the foamy feel of it in my mouth. It's a nails-down-chalkboard kind of thing.

They just checked all the major brands of bagged green tea here. Most of them include huge amounts of sugar, up to 25 %! Ridicilous. It's not something you expect buying green tea, as you connect green tea to "healthy" and "natural" and "less processed" and whatever. Well, like my better half commented tasting one high quality green tea I got as present: "Soaked grass." I must admit that green tea can't boast with taste. You drink it because you believe it's healthy. Aside of that: Years ago, it was a culture shock to me to learn that it's normal in china to drink plain hot water, because tea is so expensive. I had thought every chinese can afford drinking tea by gallons.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hi, If you like Earl Grey, you need to try Lapsang Souchong or Caravan. Both of these are "smoked" teas, and they have one great advantage. They can be mixed really well. I used to have loose tea, and when I made a pot, it might have a t-spoon of mint tea, or orange pekoe ... and it adds a slight bit of sweetness to it. You can also use hibiscus (sp).
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
