    OUCH!
Well at least I didn't hear any auto-tune artifacts.
At least in the one minute and six seconds that I was actually able to listen to it anyway.

Yeah.... that performance would have gotten her voted off AI...... I have heard some live segments in the past and the girl needs auto tune to fix her vocals which is not a problem in a studio.........however.....live... she has pitch problems.

She has two things going for her...
    1. She is easy on the eyes
    2. She is a decent (some would argue great) songwriter

Swifty just happens to be the hottest thing in country music right now. I wonder if she will be a flash in the pan or a star who has staying power. Right now, she generally writes about teenage angst.... so what will she write when she grows up? That is yet to be determined.

Before the first minute was over I was about ready to shoot the piano player.  He was probably ready to shoot himself, for that matter.

I didn't even think of that Janet.
Here we are thinking Taylor was out of key when maybe she was dead on and the band was all out of tune.

    Hmmm, food for thought.

There exists hardware to tune vocals in realtime. Why her handlers did not make use of this in the early stages of her career is beyond me.

I downloaded this video to show clients when they are feeling unsure of their vocal performance in the booth.

    One final word...

    Sheesh.

So as not to appear to be climbing on the "Bash Swifty" bandwagon.... it is very possible that she was scared s***less. Heck, she's what 19 at best? Walking out in front of a huge crowd in that room, PLUS the knowledge that it's probably one of the biggest watched shows on TV.....

Between stage fright, which tends to tighten the throat muscles, and the possibility that she could have been having problems hearing  the monitors... (that ever happen to anyone?) ... I'm gonna cut her some slack in that department.

However, she picked an opening song that was beyond her ability...... that was  a bad call.

I can guarantee you this.... if it was me... those first few songs would be a nightmare.... from the sheer panic of the situation.

Indeed. Every con matures. As more people and fans pay attention to who writes what they are listening to, just another way to complete the total package. But then again, I don't know, and I think she writes real nice tunes.

She really can't sing her way out of a paper bag. But hey, I used to like Bob Dylan..:)

The story I heard on Swifty...from some other big hit country writers at last years TAXI rally.... was that Swifty came to Nashville at 14 years of age to show her talent to a record company. they were blown away by the songs that she had written but she needed a few more years to "mature" as a writer and performer. So the story is that the stuff she started with on her first CD was pretty much her writing from what I heard.

She is touted to be a very accomplished writer. Now I understand that production is a major factor in the final sound of a song. The issue now becomes...can she continue to write the same kind of songs as she did at the beginning or will she co-write? There is nothing wrong with co-writing as long as she is an actual participant in the process and not just getting her name on it for more royalties due to who she is... "the hottest country singer at the moment".

Back in the day... too many bands came out with a brilliant first album..... they had years of writing that went into that first one.... when they were placed under contract to produce more music..... they couldn't get to the same standards.... and the 2nd album crashes and burns.

Maybe Swifty will learn to do what is need to keep writing good songs.... well.... hits anyway. Some of her stuff rocks.

To be fair, she is obviously singing out of her range. Her pitch improves when she moves up into her comfort zone. The arranger should have realized there was a problem and transposed the song up a couple steps. Maybe she's too big a star to actually rehearse with the band, so nobody realized there'd be a problem with the key until it was too late.

I got home late last night after a gig and the only thing on was a Time/Life infomercial for a 50's country collection. Watching the video snippets during that commercial, I was struck by two stark differences between then and now: a) most of those performers are not attractive/photogenic people, and b) they are all excellent singers. Many had pitch so right-on that you'd suspect AutoTune if it hadn't been recorded in 1955.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Dave...they call that talent..... referring to the singers from the 50's.

Do you think Lulu Roman would have a snowball's chance in hell of making it as a singer today? No way. Looks come first for both the ladies and the guys.... if they can actually sing..........well, that's an added bonus.

It's been said before that if the ICONS of the country music business were just getting stared in today's business environment in country music, they would never make it. Jones, Haggard, Lynn, Twitty, Williams, Aycuff, nope... not a chance.

At least Taylor didn't parade around half dressed like Carrie Underwood did at the CMA fest show. Carries "daisy dukes" and cowboy boots were ,well, pretty trashy looking,

So the whole band blew one on prime time. You could see them crying knowing there was no turning back. Meanwhile the audience aware of what's happening, watchs the ongoing horror and despair grow in the performers, waiting for them to pull it out of the hole. Swiftys initiation I guess. The business can be cruel.

    Hi,

I may be old and stupid ... but advertising and banter for the pulp stuff just is not my thing ... and people like her that depend so much on it, like so many others ... I doubt I will ever lift a penny in their direction ... I might throw it for fun!

There are way too many dime-a-dozen performers and folks out there ... and they are not worth the hassle.

Yes, there are times when we can see the maturation process, but most people that "had it" even when young showed some serious shots of talent and ability ... and too many of these today are nothing but advertising fodder for a system that couldn't give a damn if it was right or not ... that's not even respectful at all !!! Think about it!

I would fire the band and orchestra on the spot and get a different producer and person to work with ... that is inexcusable on a day and age like this, specially for someone like her where the investment is so large and so many others are depending on her ... it's almost like someone did it on purpose so she can crash. Tell you what ... dump the people you work with and get a rock band ... they tend to be less critical about stuff that does not necessarily make music that bad or that good ... after all ... the 20th century was the place for discordance in music ... and that would include vocals ... so what is the big deal? That we're jerks?

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
