I don't think I get Marilyn Monroe... what am I missing?
I'm watching yet another old dusty film on Netflix featuring Marilyn Monroe. And I want to get it... but I don't. She sure is pretty but the acting seems trivialized by her awkward mannerisms. Were the movies just bad? Was it just an awkward time for movie making? Early color production vs classic black and white? Maybe there was an uncertainty as to what to write for now that the photography and editing were changing to include the color? I don't know... I want to be a red blooded male... what am I missing? Please discuss. best regards, mike

I tend to agree with you. I think she was very pleasing eye candy but that was about it.

I just watched Cool Hand Luke a few nights ago on TCM. Hadn't seen it in years. There are a few parts, like the girl washing the car, and the girly magazine.... I was thinking, "really... that deserves that sort of a reaction?" but I guess that was a different time.... I never got a bunch of things that others seemed to. And in a few cases...trust me, that was a very good thing.

The crazy thing is that I always used to fall for the rocker girls with the very same hairdo. Platinum blondes looks especially exciting when they are dancing on top of the speaker stack.

Every famous artist has a few potholes in their road to glory. Marilyn Monroe appeared in many mediocre comedies before she found her stride. Argueably one of Hollywoods finest producer/directors, John Huston, believed in her talent and cast her in her last picture "The Misfits" co-starring Clark Gable(also Gable's last picture) and Eli Wallach. A tortured tale of three lost souls. Monroe's work here is a wonder to behold. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Definately worth checking out................Ron

Yes, if you can stomach what that bastard John Huston did to those wild mustangs (he was a first rate **** but also an incredibly gifted director) The Misfits is excellent cinema. And Monroe was very good. As she was in quite a number of movies...Some Like It Hot comes to mind and The Seven Year Itch.

I seriously doubt that any horses were mistreated in "The Misfits". Huston was quite good at working with animals, after all he played Noah in his production of "The Bible" and the animals on the ark seemed to be quite happy to be on his ark..heh heh. Anyway, Marilyn studied under some of the best acting coaches, but much to her chagrin, was typically cast as a sex symbol.............and then came her association with the Kennedy boys and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death...............what a sad and sordid ending for such a beautiful and talented woman.

I heard Marilyn had 6 toes on each foot. Seriously. Can't confirm that though.

The way I see it, MM had to go the rocky road of pretty women: Starting with pin-up fame and concentrating on sex appeal. Most of her comedies did simply not give any room for the actor to do much. In those comedies you can see how her sense of details and timing was good, she was mimically spectacularily perfect. Comedy is more difficult to do than serious drama, all actors I've ever spoken with agree to that (and I've spoken with many). The easiest jobs for an actor are psychos/lunatics/****ed (>eeeaaasy Oscars) and depressed weepers. We'll never know how big a part in her tragedy was the fact that she was labeled so hard that she could not get the kind of roles she wanted. I agree to that in "Misfits" we can see that she was not just another babe.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
