I don't understand..

I know when I was 16 if I could have purchased X1
and talked on-line with other musicians...
I just don't understand why younger people don't
have this place taken over.

They're broke and can't afford a DAW?

They're smarter than us?

They think we're predators?

It happens with some apps...Reason's forum for example has a wide age range including many young people.

Sonar just seems to suit our age group more than the rest.  Strange but true.

I think it's possibly a) out of their price-range and b) just not aimed at that demographic

I'm not buying that price thing.
Kids are buying 2 grand + guitars and
5g Alienware laptops...

Hell I paid over 400 for a LP in the 60's. That's chicken feed today.

But factoring in inflation that's like $412 today, roight?

Ok, maybe your right with the post thing but I'm still leaning
with Jon.
There must be something about Sonar that the youngers don't like.

My son has been using SONAR since Ver 2.

He's never been on this forum that I'm aware of.

No I don't think it's to do with money either.

Reason isn't cheap but it seems to have a 'cool' factor that seems to attract a younger audience, and old farts like me too.  FL Studio probably has a younger demographic too.

It's why I don't understand why Cakewalk don't play to that particular strength rather than missing the mark so often with things like Beatscape that are not going to appeal to younger DAW users nor us mature folk.

Sonar, the grown man's DAW kind of thing, rather than going for the kewl, me too market with what they sometimes seem to cringingly think are buzz add-ons that are seemingly aimed at a younger market.

So if I consider under 30 and in just the US
we can definately say 1 in about 20 million does use Sonar
and doesn't use the forum.

We're getting somewhere.

I suspect they're not all fondly magining themselves 'sitting in a studio', 'making records', and 'getting on the radio', like a lot of us old fogies are

Until someone makes the decision to stop the GUI looking like a mixing desk, I don't think it will appeal to the young 'uns. We're just hanging on to an anachronism.

I do think price comes into it, because (I'm thinking) there is little value placed on recording now, but a guitar is just as cool and desirable as ever. Buy great guitar, buy great amp, download Audacity.

So...
Recording is not really a big thing with the youngers.
The ones that may prefer to use a cheaper not so pro software.

So far so good? Oh...one in 20 million use Sonar but not the forums.

There has been a lot of criticism about UF cutting deeply into it's computer science program:

http://www.huffingtonpost...=university-of-florida

Few consider that there is a hidden message: Very few parents in Florida are encouraging their kids to be prepared to enter a computer science program.

Everyone seems to be scratching their heads wondering why the tech-volution hasn't taken them along for the ride.

This forum is likely not the best measure of quantitative interest in Sonar from the younger users IMO. A lot of my younger buds use Sonar but never come to any forum.

The X-1 forum seems to get a lot of hits from a  lot of ages.

I think a lot of things have become devalued now..graphic design, photography, illustration, recording..it's all a click away now and 'anyone can do it', so the desire to pay hard-earned money for the tools has gone.

I actually think there has been too much emphasis on hi-tech in education for a long time.

Not enough in 'real world' engineering.

Also there's not a school I know of here that doesn't have a media studies dept equipped with plenty of audio and video gear that most students are adept at and familiar with, but it's like they can't change a wheel when they get a puncture anymore.

I do know that even the amount of registered users of of the forum (not the regular posters which is a much smaller number) is still only a fraction of people who own Sonar.

and James you might be right that they don't care about spending money on recording software, but X1 Essentials is only what $99USD (or 499 pounds not counting the Bouy tax?)

For youngsters not to want a DAW;
I think its because they all play video games now and music is becoming less exciting to them.

It's not what I'm seeing.

Facebook subgroups, tweets and twitters and all manner of music creation apps. and collaboration methods.

Kids have the gear and money to spend on gadgetry AND the talent to use it, I have no doubt about that.
