I found the potential motivation

In this 43rd year of my life, I'm finally trying to learn how to drive. I totally hate it and I feel that I have absolutely no sense of the space the car occupies and how it relates to things around and movements and all. I know everybody is doing it (including plenty of idiots who shouldn't) but it's just not my thing.

But this morning I stumbled upon a picture of this car and I figured that THIS would probably give me the extra incentive to learn to drive.

That's the car I want! A 1964 Cadillac Eldorado. Black, of course.

Pretty Batmobile-ish, uh?

:P

You can keep your Eldorados
And the foreign cars absurd
Me, I wanna go down
In a Silver Thunderbird.

Good luck with learning to drive btw..my mother-in-law passed her test in her early '60's, so it's never too late.

Nice wheels but I bet that bugger would require a mortgage to keep the tank full.

Oh and it kind of reminded me of my Pepere's car. An early seventies Lincoln Continental. Thing was a boat which was hilarious because he was like five foot nothing (maybe shorter) and looked like George Burns. He could barely see over the wheel.

Also... it was powder blue. Even the leather interior. lol

Thanks. :)

I used to make every possible excuse to my wife but the we watched God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, and saw Ozzy driving... If the Ozzman himself finally got his license and manages to drive, any excuse I could come up with is pretty much nul and void.

I still hate it, though.

Lools like the perfect car for someone who has no concept of how big it is. Stay away from grassy knolls and I'm sure you'll be just fine.

On the other hand, if it's the batman look you're after, may I suggest this little beauty........

Actually, having been born and raised in the 70's, my conception of these cars is probably even bigger than they really are. I remember accidentally removing the safety break while I was playing around in my dad's car when I was 8 or 9 and going on for a nice little scary ride downhill...

Later, my grand father instated on giving me his car when he could no longer drive - even though I was the only one in the family who didn't have a license. That thing was huge, man...

Re: I found the potential motivation 2014/08/23 18:30:59 (permalink)
I failed my driving test at age 17 because I got the days mixed up and my driving instructor arrived to pick me up the day before I thought it was. And of course, I was stoned. Apparantly my performance was pretty good, but we stopped at some traffic lights and I fell into a trance looking at the sun setting. Didn't snap out of it until the cars behind me were honking. The examiner said he couldn't excuse that lack of attention.

I never took it again, but I drove a milk truck without a license for a while at 19 or so, then drove again in my late 20's when I worked in sales. Wouldn't drive without a license again though, I hear it's frowned upon....and I've never felt particularly comfortable behind the wheel either.

Take as much time as you need to learn Rain.  My son Alex passed his driving test last year and we are his parents were required to have him drive with us for over 40 hours.  We also had to get him a professional driving instructor for 3 lessons and he had to sign off on him.  He was a retired L.A.P.D. officer that specialized in advanced driving skills.

Best of luck with this and remember to always watch out for the other guy and never take anything for granted as you drive.

I never needed to learn to drive since I always had good access to public transport. I lived near a railway station and a bus station and could get to anywhere pretty quickly. But that was before moving from the UK to Australia. Here trains are slow and infrequent, and everybody drives except me.

I never needed it either, and it really isn't something I want to do, but it'll be a relief for my wife to know that I can drive. And I certainly owe that to her.

But I don't have any other ambition than to act as a substitute driver in case of an emergency or such.

Or maybe go to Guitar Center nearby, to buy gear. :P

I nearly bought that but it had 477,710 miles on the clock. Which funnily enough is the distance to the moon and back.

Cars with tail fins..... classic.  American Detroit steel..... no better place to be than in one of those old time cars. You press the accelerator to the floor and you can not only hear the rumble of the ponies under the hood, you can feel the power as it presses you back into the seat as it accelerates.
Most of the cars today don't come close to the classics back then. 40 miles to the gallon is great but..... there's no g force acceleration and standing beside it, if you can't tell it's running..... what good is it. Sure it gets you from one place to another..... however, the Detroit steel lets people know you're coming. Sure, the gas mileage isn't as great, and it's a bit louder, but.... hey, driving a classic car is so worth every dime.

I've had several through the years, especially back in the early 70's when I first started driving. None of them were showroom classics but for a poor boy, anything that ran was just fine with me.  My first car was a $100 Ford Comet....and it had fins.... not a powerful car but solidly built and I drove it till it wouldn't go any further. My mom had a nice Malibu that I could drive from time to time.  I was enjoying driving that Chevy Malibu with the 302 and 3 on the column. It would slam you into the seat if you weren't careful and lay some rubber on the road....and get you pulled over for a ticket if a cop saw you do it.

My father ran a driving school business in NJ where I was born and grew up. His primary student demographic was women who were 40 years of age and up with many in their 50's and 60's who had never driven. It was the 60's and women were starting to break out of the stereotype they had lived with  that a woman should be in the home and if she needs to go to the store, the man can take here there. Nope, all those ladies wanted the freedom that came with a driving license and my father taught them.  6 hrs of driving and they were ready foe the state exam.

I can see how folks in other countries and cultures can rely on public transportation...and folks who live in cities.... but in the heartland of America, a driver's license is a right of passage and is essential to us.

Learn to drive. It's one of the great joys in life.

I would have loved to have this when I was young...

Instead I had one of these.  Ironically, by the time my crazy Uncle (who was a two-time Chief Mechanic on an Indy 500 car back in the 60's) had finished with it, it had more horsepower than the car at the top of this page!  A large-block 560 with dual Holley 780's and extra large secondaries, a Littlefield blower and a positraction rear end (the large tires were tucked inside and there was a sneaky way to get the extra air in so no scoop required).  Quite a sleeper car - but stupid!  You could only go straight (too much power in the turns) and you could watch the gage for the 33 gallon gas tank literally move down!  Let's just say that 5 mpg would have been an improvement!  Oh, and it got up to 163 mph (NOT recommended!  LOL).

I don't know how you've survived 43 years without driving. My life wouldn't have been the same without it.

I got my license at 16 in a blizzard. I was freaking out because I was 1-1/2 hours late for my 8 AM appointment, and we only lived 30 minutes away. The blizzard was that bad.

And of course I had even more nervous tension about taking the test in a blizzard as opposed to the dry roads I had practiced on throughout autumn.
I thought for sure that I failed before I even got there and that the guy would 'ream me out' for being so late.

On the contrary, he was so happy just to see someone actually show up, that he couldn't wait to get out there, and basically rushed me out the door.

Naturally because of the weather, I slid a tiny bit on an icy incorrectly sloped corner when turning left and I hit
the thin white plastic pole during parallel parking, [which I was otherwise quite good at], because there was so much snow on the back window, I couldn't even see it.

But he passed me anyway.

As stated above, driving can be really fun - especially if you get comfortable and confident with it, and find yourself in a nice little sports car with a manual transmission, fat tires and 'balls of steel' with plenty of 'snot' to peel down the open road.

Fun Fun Fun!!

Let's see...

I spent the first twenty some years in a small 11 000 souls town, where you could get from just about any A point to any B point in about 20 minutes walking. Winter was brutal, but when you're born and raised in that stuff, that's just the way it is.

Then I lived in Quebec City - I could get anywhere I needed to go either by bus or by walking.

Then Montreal - even better, there's the subway. A car is actually more of a problem than anything else in Montreal - talk about spending 20 minutes trying to find a parking almost every night. And in the winter, having to wake up an hour earlier because there's been a snowstorm and the car is hidden under 2 feet of snow...

And then there's all the parking time limitation; so even if you don't NEED your car that day, you MUST move it after x time. And try to find another parking. But wait - they're removing snow from the streets so there's no parking spot available anywhere near.

Or then, you could just walk to the subway... That's how I survived. :)

Filling a Cadillac here in the south would probably cost me as much as filling a moped in Canada...

Ah yes - Montreal.
My understanding is that many of the roads are in dire need of repair as well, so that would be another good reason.
Myself, I was born and raised in Toronto, so I can certainly related to all you've said here.

We also have the subway, so I use to take the bus to the subway, and then ride it a-ways to college & back.

As for driving, I use to hate shoveling the big-ass chunk of snow the snow plow would make right in front of the driveway.

And scraping the ice off the windows - no fun.

So I hear ya loud & clear.

On the other side of the fence, I can't imagine just how much money you've saved over the years - vehicle purchases, insurance, gas, repairs, tickets - sheesh!
